An early start as we get onboard a small private bus from outside our hotel to take us to Xitang, which is situated some 80kms from Shanghai. It is important that we get the most out of our day as we need to be back in Shanghai for early evening time to get an overnight train to Xi'an. We understand from our tour guide that Xitang is an ancient Chinese water town and very picturesque. Upon arriving at Xitang, we get into smaller groups, put on a life jacket and get on a Wupeng (Chinese type gondola boat). The boat ride down is very pleasant as we go under many small bridges that connect the footpaths over the rivers. This water town crosses 9 rivers and was built in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. ... read more

After a short 2.5 hour flight, I had arrived in Shanghai. It's starting to get dark and I find myself queuing for ages to get a taxi to take me to my hotel. I am so grateful to Elaine for writing the address of my hotel on a big sheet of paper in Shanghainese, the local dialect, as I now find myself in a country where they speak literally no English. Upon arriving at my hotel, I find the reception staff speak a little English. I notice my internet on my phone has become very restricted in which applications and internet search engines I am allowed to use in this communist country. Elaine has very kindly brought me this Hong Kong sim card that I can use in China and it literally lets me use all ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong March 17th 2018

Planning for this trip ended up being a little rushed to my liking as I wasn't entirely sure where in Asia I wanted to go and it was also dependent on whether I got a bonus at work so I had enough spending money for the trip. Usually I plan my trips well in advance but with decisions around selling my home and buying a new one I knew that I needed to get this trip in quickly. I was torn between Thailand and China as the two countries high on my list for Asia. I decided most people tend to go to Thailand so I thought I'd be different and go visit China. My haste decision planning not going in my favour as I find out that I need a visa for China; all the ... read more

Before meeting Fiona I had started to save up for my next big adventure. We have talked about buying a house together, taking on her two kids and potentially having a child together. Once all this happens, big travel adventures will be limited. I have travelled and seen quite a bit of Latin America and North America but Asia is somewhere I really wanted to go whilst the opportunity was still there. Whenever I talk to people about travel, most people travel to Asia so I always feel I don't have much to talk about on this continent as my focus has always been Latin America. I talk to Fiona and ask if she'll be ok if I travel to Asia alone because I feel if I don't do this trip I'll have regrets and would ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków August 13th 2017

Two short getaway breaks in the UK together and one mini caravan holiday in Norfolk with Fiona's two children and my Mum and Stepdad, Fiona and I were eager to travel to a country we both hadn't been to before. There were many European cities on the list but we narrowed it down to Krakow. I had seen many travel articles with stunning pictures of Krakow and some friends recently visiting it had put it high on my bucket-list. Our trip didn't start off too well as our plane was showing delays of 20 mins so I assumed we had a bit more time before we needed to board the plane. Turns out we didn't as I was about to pop into a shop before we headed towards the boarding gate and just looked at the ... read more

After our first getaway a couple of weeks ago in Shropshire I was eager to go away again with Fiona. We have discussed travelling a lot and its apparent that Fiona had done some travelling but not as much as she would have liked. I decided to do a surprise trip somewhere and book a B&B for a couple of nights. I really wanted us to stay at a nice B&B in a rural part of Dorset but it was not possible due to a tight budget so a city like Bournemouth was the cheaper option and having a car to venture out to remote areas seemed a good game plan. I pick up Fiona and she has no idea where we're going. She knows we're going away for a couple of nights and will be ... read more

Our first Valentines together and I buy my girlfriend, Fiona, a 2 night hotel stay on Buyagift.co.uk for a romantic getaway where you can select a hotel of your choice in many counties all over the UK. Picking where to stay wasn't too difficult and we decide on Ironbridge in Shropshire as our destination because neither of us have been there before and seems an interesting area to visit due to it's strong connection with the Victorian era. Shropshire is a county in England but it borders with Wales. Although known as one of England's quietest counties there still seems to be plenty to do and see with many historic houses, castles, museums and of course the famous Iron bridge. After a 2 hour car journey from Berkshire, we arrive at our hotel in Ironbridge. We ... read more

The past couple of years we've had my 30th birthday and my brother and stepdads joint birthday party which were great occasions with friends and family but we found ourselves spending lots of money for an event that would be over in a few hours. We therefore decided for my mum's 60th birthday we would rather spend the money and go away on a nice vacation that would last a couple of weeks. Barbados Whoa... we're going to Barbados! I can't get this song out of my head as we head for Birmingham airport to catch our charter plane to take us to Barbados. After an 8 hour uncomfortable/cramped flight, we arrive in Barbados and taken to the cruise port to embark. The welcome on-board quite something as we get given rum punch and a warm ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » Hartley Wintney November 24th 2016

Stefano I had hosted Stefano once before but just for the night as he needed somewhere to stay for a business trip. After Stefano had kindly hosted me at his apartments in Luxembourg and France, I really wanted to return the favour of his hospitality by hosting him at mine and to show him some places he hadn't seen before in England. I took the Friday off work and Stefano booked his flight tickets for a long weekend visit. Hartley Wintney I've been living in Hartley Wintney for a year and a half, after buying a brand new home through a government scheme to help first time buyers get on the property ladder. This is the first property that I have ever owned. To buy a house in the UK is not easy as the housing ... read more

I usually do city trips alone or with a friend so feeling a bit uncertain at the thought of travelling to Munich with a small group of friends. Having to remind myself that I can't do things at my usual fast pace and just go with the flow of whatever the group decides. Things start off badly when we almost don't make the plane for Munich. Thanks to motorway closure, motorway road works and then getting lost trying to find the park and ride facility. We find ourselves having only 20 minutes before our gate closes as we arrive at London Gatwick airport terminal. We are lucky there is no check-in required and no queues through security. I sprint with a friend, running through the duty free and down to the gate like a silly boy ... read more
