Miguel really wanted to tick off Wales on his country list and so we decided to include a visit to the capital with an overnight stay so that our trip wasn't too rushed, particularly with having Jovie with us, who is only 2 months old. It would be possible to do a day trip to Cardiff from where we live as it would be just over a 2 hour drive. We planned our itinerary well so that on the way to Wales we could stop off and spend some time in the beautiful Roman city known as Bath. For anyone unfamiliar with the city called Bath, it is famous for its Roman bath that you can still visit today. The city is beautiful with Georgian architecture. I've visited many times recently and never get bored of ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Dorset » Lulworth Cove April 20th 2019

We set off early to make the most out of our daytrip to Dorset. We get down to Durdle Door in good time, arriving at around 9:15am. We actually got down a little earlier than expected as luckily the roads were clear. I've been to Durdle Door many times, but never this early. It is actually worth getting down at this time as there are hardly any people around and given it is an Easter weekend with good weather you know it will get packed here later on. It is Jovie's first time ever seeing the sea, so whilst we are parked up overlooking the coast I hold her up so she can see the sea, as she probably wont see it when we are walking around with her in the baby carrier. Durdle Door is ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » Salisbury April 19th 2019

Miguel has brought some treats with him from Argentina for us and so I'm super happy to try dulce de leche spread on my toast from breakfast. For anyone who has never tried this, it's like a milky caramel taste. We also have a box of Alfajores, which we look forward to eating later on in the week. Our trip today is a short drive of some 20 to 25 mins down the A303, so we left the house a bit later and enjoyed a slight lay-in. Forgetting that it is Easter half term, we end up stuck in traffic on the A303 and a 25 min journey turned into a 1 hour trip. Today's itinerary is a trip to Stonehenge and then a visit to the nearby city of Salisbury. By the time we reach ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Berkshire » Windsor April 18th 2019

Miguel had been saving to come to Europe for quite some time and eventually saved enough and found a place to live in Germany. Miguel asked if he could come visit and stay with us in England via his relocation to Germany. I was happy at the thought of seeing him again and pleased to be able to offer him the opportunity to spend time exploring places in the UK he hadn't seen yet, as he has only been to London previously. I meet Miguel through Couchsurfing and we met once in-person almost 3 years ago in his hometown in Argentina (see Miguel's hometown). Fiona and I welcomed our daughter into the world in February, we named her Jovie, which is short for Jovial (If you've seen the Christmas movie Elf, you'll know where we got ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin July 14th 2018

Our friend Kym for her 30th birthday wanted to do a day trip to Dublin. Rather than do a day trip, Fiona and I would have preferred to have gone for a long weekend, but with moving house the following Friday, we decide a day trip is better as we need time to pack before our big house move. It's funny the other two times I've been to Dublin have been day trips as well, but only work related. To make the most out of our day trip meant catching an early flight out of Heathrow. Our plane journey is a short 1 hour flight. When we get to Dublin, it is still early in the morning. We buy energy drinks to wake up and then grab a bus and before long we have arrived into ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Pembrokeshire » St Davids June 29th 2018

Since Fiona was unable to get us more than one night at the Monk Haven Manor, she managed to get a couple of nights at Ty Boia B&B in St. Davids. St David's is about 24 miles north from where we've been staying. It is well known for being the UK's smallest city and It's still situated along the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. St David's is pretty with quaint streets bustled with cafes, restaurants, pubs, boutiques and art galleries. The reason this tiny borough is classed as a city and not a town is due to history. Back in the 16th century, a town with a cathedral was considered a city by the English Crown. The link was abolished in 1888, but Queen Elizabeth II granted St Davids city status again in 1994 in recognition of its ... read more

Upon a recommendation from some girls on my China trip, I had stated to my partner that I really would like to visit Skomer Island to see the Puffin birds. To my surprise, she had paid for a short break to Wales to visit Skomer Island and St David's as a birthday treat. This was for 10 minutes the BEST birthday present ever, until she then surprised me again to tell me that we are going to have a baby together and that I am going to be a Daddy. Skomer Island was recommended to me by two Scottish girls on my recent trip to China as being one of the best places to see the Puffins in the British Isles. The reason it is known to be one of the best is due an increasing ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing March 29th 2018

We arrive in Beijing late afternoon and check-in at our final hotel of the tour. The tour ends after two nights and I've decided to spend 1 additional night here before heading home. In the evening, we visit the Red Theatre, to see The Legend of Kungfu show. This is my favourite show I've seen in China. There is no speaking, just Kungfu with acrobatics. The show is an infusion of modern dance with traditional Chinese martial arts, but has a storyline, as this boy follows his dreams of becoming a Kungfu master. Next day We head into Tiananmen Square, known as 'the square of the gate of heavenly palace' a vast open concrete expansion to the modern city of Beijing. Around the square are several buildings such as the Great Hall of the People, National ... read more

Asia » China » The Great Wall March 28th 2018

We take the bullet train from Xi'an to Beijing, a journey that will take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. I am excited to experience what a bullet train feels like. In some ways, it feels like being on an aeroplane, as the seats have brochures and magazines in the back pockets and there are small TV screens in the aisle, and you are constantly being offered refreshments. I can't help but keep an eye on the max speed we are going as one of the screens in the carriage shows the current speed and I note a top speed of 306km/hr (approximately 190 mph). Once we arrive in Beijing, we gather together and take a private bus to a remote area of The Great Wall of China, known as Jinshanling's Great Wall. This mountainous area is ... read more

Asia » China » Shaanxi » Xi'an March 26th 2018

We arrive early morning in Xi'an after having travelled from Shanghai on an overnight sleeper train. Once we find our hotel to check-in and freshen up, our tour guide takes us for a walk into the the centre of Xi'an via a stop-off for a quick breakfast and coffee. Xi'an is a very large city in China and famous for it's Terracotta Warriors as well as its ancient city wall. As we get close to the centre we can immediately spot the Xi'an Drummer Tower and Bell Tower of Xi'an. These two towers are symbols of the city; erected in 1380 at the time of the Ming dynasty. The Xi'an Drum Tower got its name from having drums inside and you can see the drum museum inside for a small fee. The Bell Tower of Xi'an, ... read more
