South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu December 18th 2009

We survived the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu was beautiful! While I wish I could say it went over like a breeze, I would be lying - the Inca Trail is a long, hard climb! Fortunately, we had really good weather despite it being the wet season as we only got rained on once for about 15 minutes on the third day. The weather did change drastically though between night and day with it falling almost to zero in the evening and getting very hot during the day. My nose and forehead are badly burned, blistered and peeling due to me not bringing my hat on the trail - big mistake! We booked our Inca Trail/Machu Picchu trip through ´Peru Treks´ and they were fantastic! While it was very expensive (roughly $500 USD/person not including breakfast ... read more

We arrived in Cusco on the morning of the 4th at 6am - the 2 month mark of our trip. We decided to stay at ´Koyllur Backpacker Hospedaje´ as it is cheap (only 35 soles/night/2ppl - $12.50 USD including private bathroom, hot water and cable TV) and is only 2 blocks away from the main square of the Plaza de Armas. We are happy we arrived in Cusco 10 days before we hike the Inca Trail as it is a large city with a lot to see and do. We had to purchase a tourist ticket (Boleto Turistico del Cusco) for $45 USD (valid for 10 days) in order to visit the tourist attractions (excluding the religious monuments and churches) but it proved to be worth the money. So far we have toured the Museo de ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon December 3rd 2009

We arrived in Arequipa at 7am on Nov. 30th and checked into the ´Hostal Su Majestad´. It is a really nice hostel and we couldn´t believe we got our room for half the normal price - must be because it is low season. The city was appealing to us however we were unable to see anything other than the Plaza de Armas because Braeden was sick in bed the whole first day and me the second day - we figure it was the change in altitude that did us in. Fortunately we had booked our trip to the Colca Canyon for our 3rd day so were feeling much better by the time we had to board the bus. *Correction from last blog: The Colca Canyon is not the largest canyon in the world. According to the ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines November 29th 2009

We caught the 8am bus out of Huacachina and headed straight to the airport in Nazca (approx. 3.5 hour bus ride). Following only a few hours of sleep and far too many glasses of wine, I was feeling terrible. By shortly after 12pm, we boarded the tiny 3-passenger plane, barf-bag in hand. Even without a hangover, the ride would be quite nauseating but fortunately, neither of us vomited. Even Braeden was surprised how ill the plane made him feel as he always takes very small planes to and from work. The flight lasted less than 30 minutes but the dips of the plane and struggling to look through a camera lens made the trip feel much longer. The ´Nazca Lines´ were very interesting to see so in the end we were glad we did it - ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina November 28th 2009

We arrived in Huacachina, Peru on the 25th following a short 5 hour bus ride. Huacachina is a very small town (approx. 200 ppl) just outside of Ica and is the place where tourists come to sand board and dune buggy (the town is literally surrounded by sand dunes). We did just that on our 2nd day here and it was so much fun! Braeden learned that it is much easier (and faster) to go down on your stomach as opposed to standing up - apparently sand boarding and snowboarding aren´t as similar as one would think. Dune buggying was crazy and our driver made my stomach hit my throat a couple times throughout the 2 hour trip. Fortunately there was only 4 of us so we were able to get in more boarding than those ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima November 24th 2009

We arrived in Lima, Peru on the 20th after an 18 hour bus ride. I found the bus to be quite uncomfortable as it was a sleeper bus with deep reclining seats so there wasn´t much room to spare. Also, the woman in front of me kept reclining her seat fully without looking behind her so twice I had my head pinned down to me knees and other times I had her head practically in my lap - not an enjoyable way to travel, especially if you are claustrophobic. We were also 2 rows away from the toilets so the smells were quite horrific. Oh well, still better than some of the bus rides we endured in SE Asia! ¨Cholera - a shitty experience¨. That would be the title of Braeden´s blog if he had one. ... read more

South America » Peru » Tumbes » Tumbes November 17th 2009

Sunny Mancora is not the place you want to get sick, just ask Braeden. He has unfortunately been sick for almost the entire time we have been here and has been trapped in the room for days. We believe he got a bacterial infection from the bloody hamburger he ate (he knew better but decided to try it anyway) as he has been sick since that meal 5 days ago. Even his prescribed dose of Cipro wasn´t strong enough to cure it so today I went on a mission to find something that would work. Unfortunately, there are no English-speaking doctors in Mancora but I did manage to find a Spanish-speaking Scottish man who acted as my translator at the medical center and pharmacy. We now have 2 different types of pills that he is on ... read more

South America » Peru » Tumbes » Tumbes November 13th 2009

We arrived in Mancora, Peru on the night of the 9th after another long bus ride (approx. 15 hours). Fortunately, crossing the border didn´t turn out to be the nightmare we read about on the internet as we chose to take a direct bus to Tumbes then another short bus to Mancora. Apparently several people have had problems with theft, etc. while crossing that particular border point into Peru so we were happy that it was quick and painless for us. Mancora is beautiful! It is hot and sunny everyday and the water is clear and blue - much different than Montañita. We are kind of disappointed we didn´t hear about this place sooner as we would have much rather spent the last 2 weeks here in the sunshine. Matt ended up coming with us so ... read more

South America » Ecuador » West » Montañita November 5th 2009

We are still here in Montañita and unfortunately the weather has not changed. We have not seen sunshine the whole week or so we have been here and there has been more or less a constant light drizzle of rain that is enough to get you damp and keep you that way. Braeden has enjoyed surfing every day despite the cool temperature but I have yet to get into a bathing suit. If you´re not a surfer and can´t lay out on the beach, there really isn´t that much to do around here. For this reason, I´m pretty sure we will be moving on to Peru on Monday. Mancora is supposed to be beautiful with sunny weather all year round (more like the beach weather I´ve been hoping for). I believe Matt will be coming along ... read more

South America » Ecuador » West » Montañita October 29th 2009

We took a flight from Quito to Guayaquil then a bus to Montañita. Unfortunately when we arrived it was raining and cool which wasn´t exactly the exotic beach life I was expecting or hoping for. The weather hasn´t been too bad and Braeden has been able to surf. We got enrolled in Spanish school and have been in class for 4 hours/day with another guy (Matt) from the US. It isn´t exactly what we were expecting as it has been a lot of verb conjugation (which I´ve already taken and what Braeden doesn´t care for) but we do get to play games like Scrabble and Snakes and Ladders which is fun. We probably won´t take another week of class but overall I guess it was worth it. It is so nice to finally get to a ... read more
