The drive from Mendoza, Argentina to Valparaiso, Chile was beautiful and we were very happy to have had panoramic seats on the bus as we traveled during the day. Our bus left Mendoza on the morning of the 1st and we arrived at the border at 12:30pm. We were fortunate that it only took 1.5 hours to get our exit/entry stamps and to have the officials complete the luggage search. We were also very happy that we did not have to pay the reciprocity fee - I guess for now Canadians only pay when arriving by air. (Who knows how long that will last). Anyway, with an additional $135 in each of our pockets, we reached Valparaiso at 6:30pm. Valparaiso is a really neat city with a laid-back feel. We spent 3 nights in total, staying ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza February 1st 2010

Our stay in Mendoza was short and the tours were not so sweet. We arrived via the overnight bus from Cordoba at approx. 8:30am. The ride was decent enough and we were once again happy to find the hostel we booked to be ready and waiting. We did arrive however to be surprised by the fact that the hostel we were staying in was a ¨youth¨ hostel, thus making us feel a little old and awkward. Fortunately, other than the party atmosphere kicking in with loud music at 8am and lasting til after midnight, we didn´t feel too out of place - there were actually people older than us staying there too :) We were disappointed to find the tours offered were not as diverse or optimal as we expected. There was no rock climbing that ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Córdoba January 29th 2010

We arrived in Cordoba on the morning of the 25th via the 11.5 hour overnight bus. The bus ride was good, clean and actually left on time. We were happy to have booked our tickets in advance so were able to get the panoramic seats in the front and therefore did not have anyone reclining on us. We were also nicely situated far away from the toilet which is always a luxury! (Recommendation: Flecha Bus). We were booked into ´Cordoba Hostel´ prior to our arrival and happy that our reservation was secured. Our room was nice with a private bathroom and balcony over-looking the courtyard and pool (which is amazingly smaller than the photograph on the website depicts). The room was a little pricey at AR.100/2ppl/night (Argentinian Pesos: USD = approx. 1: 3.8). We have begun ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta January 23rd 2010

Welcome to Argentina. Salta is a nice city with a comfortable feel but not too much to do. During our time in the city, we took a small tour which involved a nice ride around in an open bus for a couple hours. The bus was cheap and we were able to see several churches, monuments, statues and other important buildings so was worth the wait (it wasn´t an arranged tour so we had to wait at the bus stop for it to come around). We also took a ride up the Teleférico (which was over-priced and not worth the money). We had a couple nice meals at a fancy steakhouse and Braeden was really happy to finally have a good piece of meat (the steak was about the size of his face!). We also saw ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza January 19th 2010

Tupiza - the last town where Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid stayed under alias and planned to rob the local bank prior to their death in 1908. It is a quiet town with a western feel which surprisingly doesn´t seem to use this bit of history to its advantage. I expected ¨Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid¨ tours and posters strewn about, but there really was nothing. This may be due to the fact that they weren´t actually killed in Tupiza but approx. 100km away. Either way I still expected more acknowledgment or exploitation for touristic purposes. We arrived in Tupiza on the 17th following a 12 hour bus ride from Potosi and checked into hostel ´Mitru´. It was a nice hostel, clean with private bathroom, TV and swimming pool. We only spent a quick 2 days in ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre January 16th 2010

We made it to Sucre in the afternoon on the 12th following a short 3 hour bus ride from Potosi. The city (also known as the City of Four Names - La Plata, Charcas, Ciudad Blanca (White City), and Sucre) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 13, 1991 due to its history and colonial architecture and was a nice place to spend a few days. We stayed at the ´Hostel Cruz de Popayan´which was alright (with the exception of a horrible smelling bathroom due to black mold above the shower) and ate literally every single meal at ´Joy Ride Cafe´as recommended by the Lonely Planet - they have amazing food! On our 2nd day we visited the small mountain of Cal Orck'o located about 6 km outside of Sucre which is home ... read more

Our flight ended up departing Rurrenabaque on the night of the 6th at 6pm putting us back in La Paz by around 7pm. We ended up staying a couple more nights in the city at the same hostal only this time we were disappointed that it was full of people - much nicer and quieter when you are the only 2 in the building. We also managed to get a couple good meals in at ¨Alexander´s Coffee¨and ¨Oliver´s Travels.¨ As stated before, they are hard to come by in this country. We left La Paz on the morning of the 8th and headed to Uyuni. We arrived following a 3 hour bus ride and 6 hour train only to find out that the town had been over-run by tourists and there wasn´t a hostel with beds ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque January 4th 2010

We flew from La Paz to Rurrenabaque on the morning of the 29th. We chose to fly as, with it being the wet season, both the weather and roads can be unpredictable and make the 18+ hour bus ride a nightmare. Fortunately flights only cost $75 USD/person so it wasn´t that bad. What was bad though was the condition of the landing strip in Rurrenabaque. I have never been afraid of flying but bumping our 23-passenger plane down onto a narrow dirt strip in the middle of the jungle was enough to make me bury my face into my hands and hope for the best. Fortunately we made it but only to step off the plane and instantly be dripping in sweat. (It is impossible to stay smelling good here!) This, however, is where Braeden and ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Huayna Potosí December 29th 2009

Oh the things Braeden gets me to do! First it was spending a day on a mountain bike after 18 years of not riding. Then it was hiking the Inca Trail for 4 days with no previous hiking experience. And now, the big one - climbing a mountain 6088m above sea level when I have never climbed anything before in my life. How he gets me to do it, I have no idea, but it was insane! To put it into perspective, Huayna Potosi is just 26 feet short of 20,000ft and stands higher than: Mt Erebus (highest in Europe at 5642m); Mt Kilmanjaro (highest in Africa at 5895m); and Mt Logan (highest in Canada at 5959m). Despite what the posters say (¨easiest 6088m mountain climb¨) - it is not easy. Nor does it feel like ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz December 26th 2009

We left Cusco on the morning of the 18th and caught the 7:30am bus to Puno. We chose to take a tourist bus with ¨Inka Express¨that made 5 stops along the way at different archaeological sites and points of interest including Pikillacta, Andahuaylillas, Sicuani, La Raya and Queswachaca. We were unable to stop in Raqchi as the locals were on strike and blocking the road. Overall the bus ride was okay however the company ran my credit card twice and tried to sneak an additional $770.01 without me noticing. When I approached the man who sold us our tickets on the morning of our departure (Visa statement in hand), he was argumentative and rude and refused to acknowledge the over-charge. Visa has now launched an investigation (they thought it was amusing that a bus company would ... read more
