After breakfast we gathered for a talk focusing on Canadan history through the lens of diverse peoples, each region with their own unique history, and the importance of the transcontinental railroad which linked the political and economic development of Canada as a nation. This excellent overview gave us background for the learning over the next eleven days. Next was an architectural walking tour of Old Montreal over cobbled streets with stops at the Notre Dame Basilica, Place d'Armes, Place Jacques Cartier and lots of historical information along the way. After a huge lunch we had "free time" so we headed to the Chateau Ramezay, the 18th century home of the first governor. The museum artifacts and multimedia exhibits showed how Montreal and the building changed over time, who lived there, and introduced historical figures from various ... read more

Unseasonable hot weather in Montreal again today. After breakfast we walked our suitcases several blocks to Old Town and checked into our hotel for the next two nights. Exploring this oldest part of the city, we walked to the Place Jacques-Cartier where hundreds of runners jogged by - marathon had been changed to a half-marathon due to heat. This Plaza seems to be in the center of Vieux (Old) Montreal activity though it was Sunday morning quiet today. We crossed the boulevard to the Vieux Port and walked along the piers past tour and pleasure boats, the science museum. Crossing through the park we visited the Pointe a Calliere Museum, a historical and archaeological site. The visit began with an energetic multi-media presentation covering the history of Montreal in 18 minutes. This location was the site ... read more

9:00 am: Up early to finish packing, ride to the arport in Margaret's truck, almost empty airport with no lines at the American desk and in the tsa check-in line. Sylvia and Mark just showed up. We are ready to go. Montreal: After a two + hour layover in Chicago, we had an uneventful flight to Montreal. Easy walk thru immigration and customs, found an ATM. The taxi ride into the city with a very chatty driver took us through suburbs, then past nice homes and finally condos and apartments before arriving in the central city. Our hotel tonight is in the Place des Arts district full of theatres, restaurants, lots of people walking around. We walked into Chinatown down a shop-filled alley, ate a delicious dinner at Restaurant Beijing on advice from a nearby shopkeeper. ... read more

After breakfast Jon Walker, new president of FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) spoke about new initiatives and current benefits of belonging to the organization. Much of the day was unscheduled so I headed back into Shipshewana. Menno-Hof is a non-profit information center teaching about the life and faith of the Amish and Mennonites. Excellent information was presented through multi-media, historical environments, a tornado room, colorful displays, and informative guides who answered all my questions. After my tour I headed down the street to Yoders Department Store and Yoders Hardware Store - both totally packed with almost anything an Amish family (and me) could want. Horses with buggies were parked outside. On the way back to the campground I passed several RV and trailer factories plus an antique car show. Back home I grabbed cheese for lunch, ... read more

Baked oatmeal with maple syrup for breakfast... delicious. The caterers for the week have been great with a varied menu and lots of fruit and vegetables. Cool, dreary, on-and-off rain showers as Hurricane Irma made its final push north. The first morning session was presented by a fellow Roadtrekker who volunteers with his wife each spring at Manzanar National Historic Site in Southern California. Sab was seven in 1942 when his family was taken to this Japanese War Internment Camp. His presentation started with a video overview including voices presenting snippets of life in the camp and personal perspectives. He described his experiences as a young farm boy coming to the camp, how the community organized itself and began farming and producing whatever they needed. He stressed that there were many good stories in spite of ... read more

I woke up early this morning - cool day, moisture on the windows. It was still dark so I took a chance and headed to one of the two showers in our part of the campground. Lots of people here for only two showers but I lucked out. On my way to breakfast I saw two guys with ladders washing and waxing neighboring RVs. Seemed like a good idea to me as I have never been able to actually clean my solar panels, rooftop, middle little window on top RT. After breakfast and the special meeting for Newbies, I came back as they were working on it. Good to have it waxed and it looks great. Hope not too many bugs on the way home. I've had my Roadtrek for four years and have driven over 23,000 miles through rolling hills, plains, and deserts, up mountains, into cities and through small towns. So when I saw the listing for the 2017 Roadtrek International Chapter Rally in Goshen, Indiana, I signed up. I stopped Sunday in Naperville, Illinois, for birthday cake and a visit with Aunt Milda, then dinner, dominoes, and a comfortable bed at Matt & Laura's. This morning, after a stop at Dunkin Donuts, I drove south to I-80, then east on the Indiana Tollway to Exit 92: Elkhart. This area is Amish County with several small towns, shops, restaurants, farm fields. Our home for the rally is the campgrounds at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen. I pulled in just-in-time for registration where, as a first-timer or newbie, ... read more
