Well… If I Thought I Saw Ancient Before Then This Is Something Else Arriving in Cairo just before midnight, the first thing you notice is the size of the place. As the largest single city in the world and containing the population of Australia, the lights stretch as far as the eye can see… even from the air!!! Touching down, the second thing you notice is that security and customs are not something that seems to be taken too seriously. Buying a visa from the money exchange next to customs, handing in the medical advice that wasn’t even checked, and out through passport control with a cursory glance at my passport, I had found my way to the first great civilisation in the world. The taxi from the airport to the hostel was interesting to say ... read more

So I Did!! After seeing the Cote D’Azur in France, I decided that I wanted to see how the Italians do holidays so I made my way a little further South from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. Nearly everyone I’ve met has said that it’s the must see area of Italy so hopes were high for some fun in the sun while being surrounded by beautiful coastline. It didn’t disappoint!! The bus from Salerno to where I was staying hugs the coast, often with shear cliffs falling away to crystal clear water, and takes about an hour to reach Amalfi. I was staying in the village in the next bay, Atrani, which is a little quieter and definitely a lot more local. Nearly everyone was Italian, coming here on holidays to soak up the sun, and ... read more

Heading South My last day in Rome for half a week was spent filling in the blanks, not so much with what I hadn’t seen in Rome but with what I had missed in Paris. Heading to the outskirts of the city, the first thing on the itinerary was a visit to the road that everyone was talking about when they said All roads lead to Rome. Via Appia Antica was built over 2300 years ago and was the main artery into Rome from the South East for the majority of it’s life. Lined with ancient villas slowly falling into disrepair, it is now more like a country lane with trees overhanging the road then a major artery. The road itself still has sections of the original cobbles… but I use the term cobbles with a ... read more

And Poking Through The Remains With most of Rome covered over the previous two days, I'd left the big stuff for day three... and when I say big I mean huge!!! The Colosseum incites all the usual thoughts of ancient Rome at the first glance. The spectacles that entertained, the way society was structured and the brutal nature of it all is encompassed by the iconic structure I find myself standing in front of. Trying to beat the crowds and the heat, I'm down at the entrance with only about 60 others at 8.20am, 40 minutes before it opens. Even luckier is the fact that they opened the doors 15 minutes early so I could get a bit of a head start on my day. The first time you climb the stairs and see the inside ... read more

But Maybe Not Quite As Much As This Place So I mentioned that I was heading to a city that’s a country within a city today. It also happens to be the smallest country in the world at just one square kilometre and was given it’s independence from Rome in the 15th Century (I think???). It has it’s own postal service, currency, newspaper and radio station and has a unique army of Swiss Guards to protect it’s leader. If you need more than one guess as to where I am you should be shot right now!!!! Vatican City is an impressive area to say the least. Surrounded by high stone walls (God knows why they had to build them when they’re in the middle of Rome… sorry for the pun), from the outside it looks more ... read more

Roma!!! Italy’s train system works on a “how fast do you need to get there” basis. If your in a hurry there’s the Eurostar, a little slower are the Intercity (or IC) trains, and then there’s the dawdle through the countryside option of the Regionale which stops at nearly every station on the way. There was two deciding factors in all my decisions to take the Regionale trains : 1) It lets you see more of the scenery and some of the towns you pass through are little more than a single road and a station. It shows you the true Italian lifestyle instead of just a blur, and 2) The price of the ticket is less then half of the Eurostar and still a lot cheaper than the IC, So if you don’t mind a ... read more

Ciao From Tuscany The train from Nice into Italy ran smoothly with a quick change at Genova, then on to my first real taste of an Italian city with a nights stop in Pisa. There's only a couple of reasons to visit Pisa, the obvious being the leaning tower, and then the Campo Dei Miracoli that it's situated in which also houses the Duomo (the main church of the city). Luckily, the hostel I'd booked was called Under The Tower, and that's exactly what it was. You could see it from the bedroom window!!! Placed on one of the little side streets just off the piazza with a row of pizzerias running the length of it creating a festive atmosphere. Kids with gelato and stalls full of all the touristy trinkets added to the vibe as ... read more

Livin' It Up On The Cote D'Azur The previous day I wasn’t able to get a train from Barcelona to Marseille organised so it was on to Plan B and head to the bus station to organise a ticket. The morning I was to leave on my first European bus was a nightmare. Arriving at the station an hour before departure, I waited for the gate to be displayed and then headed there with my ticket to wait for the bus. The bus came and the Spanish driver directed people in Spanish to put luggage in certain areas of the bus depending on where you were planning on getting off. Not a problem… got my luggage on and went to hand the ticket to the driver and …. all hell breaks loose. He points at a ... read more

The Spanish Life Arriving in Valencia an hour late, I was pleased to find that the temperature here was much easier to handle at a mere 42C. Out of the train station and heading towards my hostel, the city was a sudden assault on the senses. There was life everywhere, from the lady feeding the birds in front of the enormous fountain to the people having a laugh around the bull fighting ring. It is also one of the more beautiful cities I've seen from first impressions with heroic monuments, fantastic sculptures and fountains in every plaza, as well as magnificent churches and temples and even the gate of the old city wall looming over the old quarter. Reinvigorated, I set off walking the winding back streets and lanes, weaving in and out of towers and ... read more

And No.... I Didn't Shave My Goatie Off But before I get to that.... I arrived in Madrid thinking "it's the capital, they'll have lots to see and do" and was disappointed almost immediately. On the up side though, it is a great city for just walking around as everything is all in the centre of town. Meeting a fellow Aussie in the metro station (they're bloody everywhere I tell you) that was staying at the same hostel as me, we headed out to see some of the sites together with an American that had been on the road now for over 15 months (and I thought my trip was a long time though he spent the entire time just in Spain and France!!!) Just down the road from the hostel is the biggest street market ... read more
