And The Challenges Of International Driving Now I'm not going to sugar coat this.... driving on the right side of the road is exhausting!! Not so much physically but mentally it drains you. It should be said that I really enjoy long distance driving. The open road, music cranked, nothing but possibilities in front. But when having to constantly think for hours on end it can get a bit much. You see, it's not just the constant reminder you need to give yourself to stay right... it's the little things too. The fact that because you're in a left hand drive you continuously hit the door as you automatically go to change gears... that you find yourself glancing up and to the left only to find the rear view mirror is not where you're use to ... read more

Two Worlds That Couldn't Be Further Apart. The day before flying out of Fiji, I thought I must have over done the air conditioning during the night as I started to get a tickle in my throat. Unfortunately, not the case, as my final morning it had blossomed into a lovely and endearing husky rasp. By midday I was barely able to move and wanted nothing more than to try and steal my room key back so that I could curl into the foetal position in a dark corner. Instead, I had a generous Veronika and Joeli ply me with honey and lemon tea for the 7 hours remaining until I needed to be at the airport. 11 hours onboard a plane with a sore throat, a barking cough, and a nose that was now creating ... read more

In Transit Possibly the two most frown inducing words in the world. Expensive food, uncomfortable seats and the ever present smell of body odour relegates you to the world of travel no-mans land. The worst part is that it is necessary for the budget traveller to traverse this waste land more often than not. By saving money on accommodation and catching the red eye out of Perth it meant that the 7 hour layover in Sydney was always going to be a hardship. Couple that with luggage carousels (why don't they let you ride on them), and the constant threat of being stuck on an uncomfortable airport lounge next to someone that wants to shave their legs (yes that actually happened) and it becomes the "perfect storm". There are definitely some deciding factors that relate to ... read more

During the night, the DOC campsite I'd stayed at, Puhi Puhi, just north of Kaikoura, had managed to fill to capacity. It was great to meet a few of them in the morning, with a list of countries ranging from Spain and Germany to the US. Goes to show the draw that New Zealand has on the world travel scene. The coast road from just south of Kaikoura to about 80km north of it is stunningly rugged with the road often weaving in and out of the rocky coves where sea lions are sunning on the rocks. It winds along next to the Pacific Rail Line that stretches from Christchurch all the way to Picton, often swapping sides as either the train line disappears into a tunnel or the road does. It was on this stretch, ... read more

For every holiday there are a couple of things on a list that originally made you want to go to that particular place.... a new trail.... a new people or custom.... or in my case for this particular holiday, a new landscape. Something so far removed from my norm that it gets the imagination running. Something never before seen or experienced that it leaves you speechless, breathless and giddy with a the perceived freedom that comes with it. And it nearly didn't happen... When I arrived in Franz Joseph the clouds were rapped tightly around all the peaks making it almost appear like a misty plain. One of the main driving factors for me to visit New Zealand had been to get out on a glacier, preferably by helicopter (which I had also never been in), ... read more

My luck couldn't last forever... but at least it lasted as long as it did. Saturday was forecast to rain and although the day started stunningly, I knew it wouldn't stay for long. This being said, it was not necessarily a bad day for a shower or two as I was heading north through the 2nd of my alpine crossings, Haast Pass. Leaving Wanaka, I woke past Lake Howea and back to the northern section of Lake Wanaka, before starting to climb once again. The clouds were already covering a lot of the tops of the mountains and it wasn't long until I joined them. The road weaves in and out of Mt Cook National Park, alternating between pasture lands and the temperate rainforest so synonymous with the west coast of New Zealand. One thing I've ... read more

Leaving Te Anau and Fiordland behind, I headed to the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown. A ski resort village in the winter with The Remarkableson their doorstep, when the snow isn't falling there is still much to do. A tourist mecca, the town is set up to cater for everyone's needs. Lying on the banks of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by mountains, there isn't a water sport in the world which is not available to do here. From kayaking to steamer cruises, jet-boating the lake or the canyons, swimming, tubing or even diving, the list is endless. It is also renowned as the birth place of bungy jumping with the god father of the sport, A.J. Hackett, lending his name to the worldwide company that operates from here. You can even jump the Kawarau Bridge ... read more

Now That's Saying Something When You're In Fiordland Everything I'd ever read on New Zealand prepared me for the beautiful scenery, the welcoming people, and the abundance of activities available to do in this amazing country. What they didn't mention was that they have their very own Dracula!!! My ankles are not the most desirable thing on the planet usually but to these blood suckers it must be nirvana. I now seem to have my own model of the mountainous terrain that is so famous on the west coast of the South Island. The Black Sand Fly is a scourge on the country... and they seem to congregate in the most beautiful areas. So much so that there are even landmarks named after them. One such landmark in Sandfly Point in Milford Sound. The drive to ... read more

Purakaunui Bay dawned and I woke to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. A quick check out the window told me the surf was up and some brave souls were out in full wetsuits.... and I mean full.... booties, hood and all. As the 3 of us settled in to breakfast, we had one of those moments.... you know the ones.... when something happens that just takes your breath away. While munching and talking about our route for the day, Mo suddenly exclaimed that there was something on the beach, and as the waves pounded and the surfers bobbed in the water, a sea lion pulled itself up above the water line to laze in the sun on the sand. Nature has a funny way of making you remember that you are just a ... read more

The day dawned bleak, both in the sky and in my head. The couple of bottles of wine shared last night had done their worst and while Anne and Mo slept it off, caffeine was my friend. Not long on the road and the skies opened up... my companions commenting that it was not a day to be standing on the side of the road trying to get a lift. Sometimes the best things aren't planned. About an hour into the drive, we noticed a cheese factory off the side of the road and decided to pull in. Evandale Cheese is made from all local milk (literally, the farm was 5km up the road), and we sampled a number of soft and hard cheeses while having a chat to the man behind the counter. Turns out ... read more
