"I'm sorry.... all the bars and restaurants in the city centre are closed". How silly do you think I felt, completely forgetting that Christchurch endured a massive earthquake not more than 18 months ago. The city is still well and truly in restoration and repair mode with streets still being blocked off or reduced to one way, and entire city blocks behind fences as buildings that are propped up with scaffolding are either being repaired of waiting to be demolished. It was crushing to see some beautiful old churches with entire sides hanging out from the main structure as well as the sense of defeat that was almost palpable in the air at the loss of some of the city's best landmarks. Drinks forgotten, I spent the night thinking 2 things.... that people are resilient and ... read more

My tried and proven method for sea travel still holds true!!! Although the Cook Straight was rough, blowing a gale and bitterly cold, I held myself together and didn't embarress myself by becoming sea sick. The secret.... fall asleep as soon as you can in a well ventilated area.... by the time you wake up, not only is the voyage half over but your body has had time to adjust itself to the motion. It also meant that I woke just as we came in sight of the South Island and the mountains of Marlborough Sound. Emerging from the mist, rain and clouds, the ferry slides gracefully between the headlands into bays surrounded by forests and the occasional commercial sea farms (maybe oysters, maybe something else). The waters calm but the temperature seems to have fallen ... read more

I hear so many people use this phrase as an excuse.... If only I could afford it.... If only it was available.... If only they hadn't.... If only it wasn't cold, wet, and miserable outside. One of my biggest things is to always push the boundaries of the if only's. I woke at the DOC campsite in the clouds.... literally. Alone, with only the sound of the river below for company, there was a stillness to the air.... a heaviness that was part serenity, part beauty, and all water vapour. It was accompanied by the calmness that is only present when you haven't seen another human being for more than 12 hours. But as much as that was brilliant..... I had wineries to visit!!! Climbing back down out of the mountains, the clouds continued to follow ... read more

Leaving Rotorua behind, I headed towards the centre of the North Island and Taupo. On the the way there were a couple more stops... another thermal area and a waterfall. Craters Of The Moon, which unlike the ones in Rotorua, have almost no smell and no sulphur crystals forming at any of the vents. Because of this, the name is kind of deceptive as there is vegetation growing all around the area. Certainly made for a much more pleasant visit though. This area is still highly active with eruptions happening all the time. The last major one was in 2002 which makes me think that it is long overdue and maybe not such a good idea to stick around for too long. Now when I mentioned a waterfall, what I meant to say was The Mother ... read more

Arriving so late into the campsite meant that I had a full day ahead of me in Rotorua.... and with the attraction of thrills and spills as well as the thermal activity that the area is famous for, I was going to make the most of it. First stop.... Te Puia, a thermal geyser and volcanic park with a bit of Maori culture thrown in. The nice lady behind the ticket window did the usual inquiries as to what package to see and where I was from.... then asked me if I was staying at a hotel in the area. When I mentioned I wasn't, she promptly told me to tell all the other places that I was going to visit that I was staying in a local hotel and some may give me a discount. ... read more

So Friday was a driving day.... having to swing back in through Auckland to be able to continue heading south. The bane of my existence, the motorway, was even used just to make it worse. But before I got too settled in to the seat, it was time for a proper breakfast. Bacon and eggs?? Toasted muffin?? Pancakes?? OK.... so maybe not a proper breakfast.... maybe more of a tradie's breakfast. A spring roll and a giant cup of coffee to wash it down from the bakery in Te Hana. Now I was ready to hit the road. So... As I said.... back down through Auckland, straight down the motorway (also known as SH1), all the way to Hamilton. Now 2pm and still no idea where I was intending to end up for the night, I ... read more

Literally!! Today, it seems, that New Zealand was trying to blow me back to Australia.... and what better place to be for it then at the northern most tip, Cape Reinga. Think exposed, cliff faces, two seas colliding, white frothy peaks formed just out from rocky headlands, a lighthouse built in the 1800's, and me. The cape has significant traditional heritage and is based around the spirits of the local people wanting to rejoin their lost ancestors from when they came to this island. It is also a scientific research area and a sanctuary for a number of fauna. The bird life abounds throughout New Zealand I have noticed, but here on the cape it seems even more so. The long trip back down the cape was punctuated by a few stops for "forced" photo opportunities ... read more

The Best Button Of All GPS's have made a remarkable difference to self guided touring.... both for the worse and for the better. Picking up my campervan this morning, and with little to no idea of where I was going to end up but knowing that I was wanting to head north, I plugged in the name of Orewa into the GPS. This little seaside town to the north of Auckland allowed me to negotiate traffic and motorways safely to the other side of the Auckland Bridge and then depart the motorway as soon as possible. Her's where GPS's are bad.... they take the adventure out of trying to drive, hold an unfolded map, and instinctively know which lane you need to be in. Here's where they're brilliant.... Once in Orewa and the nerves of driving ... read more

And A Reason To Come Back Damn.... Slept in after the late night partying and carousing down in the Viaduct Harbor. I must be getting too old for all this frivolity. On second thoughts.... maybe I just haven't had enough training.... Yep, stick with that one I think. Off and at 'em again with a visit to the Auckland Sky Tower. I'd booked ahead and was going to do the Sky Walk and Sky Jump double, but on arrival I was told that due to the weather conditions I was unable to do the jump (insert single tear rolling down my cheek). The Sky Walk was a go though so I donned the sexy orange overalls, the manhood crushing full body harness and jumped in the elevator to climb 200m into the air. The elevator has ... read more

First Impressions of New Zealand I think I'm ruined for all future travel. It will now take me years to save to get to even the closest of destinations. The reason?? Business Class!! From the departure lounge with free food and drinks (I may have indulged a little) to the restaurant quality service and food on board (I may have indulged a little more) all the way to the extra space and inflight entertainment (I may have indulged A LOT... but who wouldn't when you can't even reach the seat in front when fully stretched). This being said, on a flight where you effectively lose your night due to travel time and time zones, it doesn't matter if you fly business, economy or even first class.... you still end up with jetlag. Arriving into Auckland at ... read more
