Well, I arrived in Sweden in the morning after a transfer in Amsterdam. Didn't talk to a single security officer, no customs officers and no baggae check, just grabbed my bag and walked out of the airport. I grabbed a train to Stockholm, hopped on a bus to the ferries, then floated my way to Gotland Island. Peter, my buddy I met in Perth Australia, had arranged everything I needed to do which made it very easy to find my way here. Upon arrival in Visby, Peter picked me up and we jumped in a limo back to his place. Gotland is awesome! Visby, the city on Gotland, is very medieval and is surrounded by a massive stone wall built hundreds of years ago. The shops and houses are all built to keep the medieval look, ... read more

After spending a few hours in Nairobi, we got extremely exhausted from all the toutes bothering us for safaris and selling things that we were in no way interested in. The city is quite compact and it is insanely over populated. It seems like the entire place was very modern only five or ten years ago, as there looks like there was infrastructure similiar to any other city, but over the past decade it has been completely run down. We decided to just take shelter in our hotel for lunch and a short nap. In the early evening, Erin left on her bus ride out west and Ryan purchased a bus ticket to Uganda departing the next day. After Erin departed, me and Ry headed off to find some pizza joint a little ways down the ... read more

Arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon, we checked ourselves in and headed off to book a safari through the National Parks. From the moment we stepped off the bus we were mobbed by hundreds of toutes trying to sell us safaris, Arusha is the main gateway to most safaris in Tanzania. We slowly climbed through the crowd and made our way to a tourist info place where we were able to find a reputable safari company that had room for myself and Ryan for a four day trip. Jord was still sick with Malaria, and Jas was not in the financial situation to jump on the safari with us. After booking our safari, we headed out to Pizzarusha, a popular pizza shop in Arusha and had a great dinner. Up in the morning to leave ... read more

Well, Sunday night after finishing up my last entry on this page, we packed up and got ready to hit the ferries back to the mainland of Tanzania. The ferry was to leave at 10pm, and all of us were exhausted and hungover from the previous night of festivities. Arriving at the ferry terminal we got our passports checked and boarded. Shown to the first class section, which is not much of a first class, it had pillows on the couches which smelled like a mixture of piss and puke. Wrapping my face in my sweater I stretched out along the couch and passed out. Somtime during my sleep the ferry departed and went along its way to the port in Dar Es Salaam. After 8 hours of sleeping and boat cruising, we arrived at our ... read more

Well, here is what has happened in the last five or six days. The second last night in Kendwa, Ryan got a fever followed by other symptoms of Malaria. When we got back into Stone Town it was confirmed by the doctor that it was Malaria, and that he needed to take meds. It was only 50 cents Canadian to visit the doctor, and about $5 for the meds... makes me wonder why im paying $6 per anti-Malarial pill (Malarone) which I take one every single day Im here. Anyways, after getting settled back into the Pyramid hotel in Stone Town, we met up with Jordan for dinner, along with his mom (Georgina) and her husband (Maurice) who are traveling with Jord for about a week. They had flown in, in the afternoon, and were staying ... read more

We arrived in Zanzibar in the late afternoon on Thursday, July 6th. Ryan's connections with the chef at Chef's Pride, in Dar had arranged for us to be picked up from the port and directed to a nice hotel in the middle of Stone Town called the Pyramid Hotel. After checking in we explored the area, and ate a late lunch. Later in the evening we checked out the fish markets which had an assortment of fish, octopus, squid, crab, lobster and much more that had been caught fresh that day and was cooked right in front of you. Early the next morning we caught a 2 hour bus up to Kwenda to relax for a few days on the beaches and wait for the arrival of Jord and his mom. (Jordan Blanchet is also a ... read more

Arriving in Dar Es Salaam, I withdrew some 100,000 shillings from the nearest bank machine which is about $100 Canadian and hopped in a taxi for Holiday Hotel, where I was to meet Jas and Ryan. Although from the outside the hotel looked like shit, it was not too bad indoors, and had a nice roof, from which you could look over the city top and drink a few beers. Jas (Jason Lush) is a friend from my years at BCIT and Ryan is a friend of Jas and Jord (Jordan Blanchet). We'll be catching up with Jord later on Zanzibar. Jas, Ryan and myself just relaxed on the roof and drank a few beers and then headed for dinner. Dinner was amazing, and very cheap ($3 for a full course meal), it was well cooked ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Gauteng » Johannesburg July 3rd 2006

I arrived in Jo'Burg which apparently is the most dangerous city in South Africa, and you could easily see it was. Every home had 10 feet high fences with razor wire along the top and 2-3 guard dogs barking. I had one day there until I would meet Jas and Ryan in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I spent the first part of the morning in Lion Park where I got to see many lion's of course along with other animals. The highlight of this trip was petting a white lion cub and driving through lion dens. I then went to Monte Casino, which looks like a giant castle from the outside, but the inside is desinged to appear like you are outside in an old aged town. The shops looked like old houses and the ceiling ... read more
