8 nights and 7 days in Budapest, we spent longer here than anywhere else on our trip. During our time we visited a monument park containing the statues and plaques that were removed from the city when Communism fell in 1989. We also just so happened to be in Budapest during the national holiday that celebrated the rebellion, and me and Hawk nearly escaped with our lives when a riot almost broke out and a handful of riot ready police appeared. We also navigated our way through the underground city caves. Dressed in cover-alls and equipped with our helmets and head lamps we crawled on our stomaches, scaled steep ledges, climbed rusty ladders, slid on our bums and squeezed through some of the smallest passages that I didn't think I would ever fit through. 3 hours ... read more

As we arrived in the outskirts of Prague we decided to stop for gas before the inner city prices kicked in. We pulled off about 2 or 3 off ramps in order to get to a gas station. After filling up... well we drove for about another hour or more in circles, on about 6 or more different highways that all seemed to lead out of or just around Prague. Finally after driving on the same street about 4 times we came to an area that was within the bounds of our little Prague city map. Navigating through one way streets we arrived at out hostel about another 30 or so minutes later. Prague... cool city. Lots to do I think, but I was just getting a little tired of walking through city streets and taking ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz October 11th 2007

we arrived in the afternoon at the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz II. It was an experience like nothing else, to see the gas chambers and crematoriums first hand. The thought that over 1.5 million people were murdered here (90% being Jews) was unimaginable, its like half the population of Greater Vancouver just gone. Basically I took lots of pictures of what I saw, and so they sort of tell the story. Be sure to see all the pics, as there are 42 of them and you need to skip to the next page to continue viewing them. Now some details and history of the camp... Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extermination camp in the area, which at the time was under German occupation. The Auschwitz camps were a major ... read more

Europe » Poland October 7th 2007

Arriving in Poland the roads and highways significantly degraded compared to Germany where we just came from. Construction was everywhere, and what seemed to be fake photo radar cameras every couple kilometers (at least I hope so). It took us longer than expected to arrive in Wroclaw, but upon arrival we magically came across the hostel Kennah had booked for us. After looking around in the most sketchiest train station I have ever been in and having an amazing salad pita we headed off to bed to rest up for the biggest concert/dance rave ever, Sensation White. The following morning we packed up and checked out, we needed not a place to stay the next night as Sensation White would last until 6AM. After a few beers in the afternoon, we dressed up in all white ... read more

After a few delays in traffic we arrived at the Munich airport but failed to catch Kennah as he had already left for our camp site. So we headed there to find Kennah and Brendan (Hawk and Kennah's friend) already checked in and ready to drink. Oktoberfest is frickin' awesome, its similar to the PNE back home with rides and festivities but about 50 times larger and beer tents that house up to a few thousand people (the largest beer festival in the world). On average they consume three million liters of beer a day. Drinking beer, a liter at a time, I found myself intoxicated quite quickly and when the gates closed that first night we had already lost Kennah somewhere and when Hawkshaw and Brendan went to find him, Brendan came back without Hawkshaw ... read more

Europe » Switzerland September 29th 2007

After paying 65 euros in tolls through France, we arrived at 3:30AM in Geneva, Switzerland. We pulled off the road and parked in a dark parking lot and just slept in the car. We awoke to kids screaming and playing and at this point we realized we were sleeping in a elementary school's parking lot. From this point we drove into the city, parked the car and took a stroll through the most internalized city in the world, with W?O of every letter having an office here (WMO, WHO, WTO, etc...). I called my friend Marie whom I met in Perth almost 3 years ago and she let us sleep at her place the next couple nights and took us out. Saturday we left early and headed towards my most daring thing I have ever yet ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Saint-Raphael » Brugge September 27th 2007

A short drive south and we ended up in a little country that produces more flavours of beer than any other. Our initial plan was for Brussels, but after a few recommendations to skip it and to go stay in Brugge, that is where we ended up after a short 2 hour stop in Antwerp. Brugge is a very nice little town, very european, with the style of the buildings dating back to the 15th century. The streets are all cobblestone, and lined with pubs promoting more than 300 flavours of beer and chocolate shops selling various flavours of rich Belgium home made sweets. Each brand of beer comes with its own branded glass, so the pubs are just packed with glasses hanging everywhere to accomodate all the various beers they sell. We spent the evening ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam September 20th 2007

Arriving in Frankfurt in the mid afternoon, you can easily see just how effiecent the Germans are... EVERYTHING in the airport is automated. We rented a small little 90HP Ford Fiesta, and although quite wimpy we still managed to top out at 186km/h down hill on the autobahn. This was the start of our true Europe trip... driving through Europe with no restrictions or timelines. About 4 hours later and over 600kms covered we arrived in Amsterdam. For myself it was my second visit but this was Hawk's first. With the streets glowing red and the smell of marajuana in the air we checked ourselves into the Bulldog Hotel... the same place I stayed during last years visit. I highly recommend this 5 star hostel. On night one we tasted some of the fresh locally grown ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens September 16th 2007

Hmmmm... Athens, what can I say. Rude, dirty and hot. Not the most tourist friendly town although many tourists come here to see the Acropolis and marble pillars and what not from Ancient Greece. We stayed in a small hotel, and after one day we were ready to leave. So we changed our flight to as soon as possible, but that still left us here for 3 whole days. Problems here were that people are just plain rude, and they won't accept 50 euro notes, although that is all the ATMs will give you. So you are stuck unable to purchase anything with your money nor get change anywhere unless your lucky. We did what any tourist in Athens would do... and that was to go see the Acropolis... this unfortunately was also a disappointment. It ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Ios September 13th 2007

Well, now back to the purpose of this trip... to taste as many local beers throughout Europe as is possible in a 3 month trek ;) Ios, this is by far my favorite island of the 3 greek islands that we visited. With a much younger crowd, cheaper in everyway, beautiful soft beaches, an awesome hostel/resort and late night parties, you can't go wrong with Ios. We checked into a small 2 bed camping shelter at an awesome resort area called Far Out. Here we went swimming in the sea and pools, layed in the sun, went banana boating, drove a quad all over the island, visited Homer's tomb (some ancient philospher guy) and yes, nurtured many hangovers. The clubs had many specials on as the season was over and they were just getting rid of ... read more
