My name is Patrick. I am very easy-going, and I like too many things to even begin to list here. I am currently on a study abroad program in Troyes, France, and I will be traveling Europe once the program is completed at the end of June.

Okay, so it's been over a week since my last post, and now I've left myself in a bit of pickle because I have to have my entire blog entry done by 2pm (50 minutes). A lot of us are traveling for the next week and then coming back on Thursday, July 1st to pick up our stuff, so they are taking it from us today to lock it up somewhere. That said, I'm going to move on to my next entry, covering the 5 days of my Scotland trip. We left on Wednesday afternoon to catch the 2:43pm train from Troyes to Paris. We arrived in Paris and took the metro to our stop where we were to catch the shuttle at 8:10pm. So, we walked around a little bit, ate some food, and came ... read more

It's about 9:10am here in Troyes and it is the morning of our departure for SCOTLAND! We found out yesterday that we have to skip our second class today in order to comfortably make the train to Paris and then the shuttle to the Paris Beauvais airport, so it will be interesting to hear about our teacher's reaction when we miss today and tomorrow. Oh well, we're going to be in Scotland! Anyways, last night was very productive. Our Project Management group finished our 20+ page report for planning our conference, and then a bunch of people hung out in my room and socialized for a while. Throughout the night, we finalized our plans for how to get to Scotland and did the online check-in for our flight. So here's the deal: we leave today after ... read more

So these past two days have paled in comparison to the weekend. It's crunch-time here in Troyes, meaning that we are loaded with projects, presentations, and final exams. This week is super hectic since many of us are leaving Wednesday night for Scotland and our projects are due early next week. Quite a frenzy. Yesterday, Monday, we only had Project Management from 10am-12pm. It was fairly uneventful, but we did some work on our project (planning the conference for the Society of Women Engineers). After class, we picked up where we had left off, and worked on the project the rest of the night after eating lunch first. The girls in my group (Amanda, Ellen, and Melissa) were the only ones that actually did a significant amount of work while Jason and I pulled off an ... read more

I realize the posts about classes are incredibly slow and unexciting, so hopefully the weekend entries make up for that fact. I am especially referring to the entry prior to this one about the slow week, which I even had a hard time writing due to lack of excitement. Anyways, this entry is about our trip to PARIS, which was fantastic in my opinion! We all had to be ready promptly at 9am to catch the bus to the Troyes train station, so it was a bit of a rush in the morning. To make things even more fun, we were being hurried along by our French teacher, who in case I haven't mentioned before is a short, silly man, so that was hilarious. As it turns out, he would be spending the weekend with us ... read more

I'll start this with information relevant mostly to those of you back in Michigan, I will be returning on July 4th in the late evening! A number of factors influenced my decision to do so, but I won't go into them here. How exciting, I know! So since the champagne tasting on the 5th of June, not all that much has happened. The next Sunday, June 6th, was a free day, which means we were given the entire day to do our own thing. Oddly, everyone seemed to sleep in until 11:45am, at which point we all woke up and hung out on Facebook for a while. Facebook is a way of life here since we really don't have all that much to do during the weekdays, so you'll probably hear me reference it a lot. ... read more

Today was our highly anticipated tour of the Champagne-Ardenne region of France, complete with a tour of a stained-glass making workshop, lunch in a real French restauraunt, time in a champagne vineyard and tasting, and a tour of a castle. The morning started at a time we've become accustomed to waking up around here, 9:30am, so that wasn't bad. Everyone woke up and got on a big tour bus to first go to the tour of the stained-glass making workshop located on the other side of Troyes. The day would not consist of any serious traveling, especially in this first leg of the trip which was only 10 minutes. I would like to (although he will never see it) give a huge internet round-of-applause to our bus driver who could handle that bus in tight spaces ... read more

To ease the pain of playing catchup, and because the weeks are much less exciting than the weekdays, I will be grouping the past 4 days into one entry, and it shouldn't even be that long! Here we go! Tuesday was a great day! We went to Beginner's French in the morning, but our teacher didn't show up, which would be the theme of the day. So we went back to the dorms and hung out for a while until our next class at 10am. As it turns out, the French teacher thought class was the next morning, and he felt absolutely terrible for the confusion, so much so that I heard he was almost in tears. In Project Management, our teacher showed up probably 20 minutes late because his flight from Vancouver was late arriving, ... read more

Finally, I'm getting around to doing this after putting it off for the last four days! First of all, I've begun including any photos I have with the blog entry they're most relevant to. I added pictures to the May 23rd and May 24th entries, as well as this one, so feel free to have a look if you're interested. They are also on Facebook (of course), so if it's easier for you to look at them there, you have options. Now, on to more important matters: the adventure weekend in Millau, France! Let's start by addressing a very practical issue: the pronunciation of Millau. I was quickly informed when we got there (apparently it's a big deal there) that it is pronounced ME-OH. The "ll" makes a "y" sound and the "au" makes an "oh" ... read more

Following the beginning of classes on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Thursday have been filled with class and pretty much nothing else. On Wednesday, we had our first French lessons. I am in the "total beginners" French, obviously. Our teacher is a complete nut. He switches in and out of French so frequently, and he talks so fast! Most of the time he'll just start talking in French, and then point at someone. Naturally, whoever it is just stares at him until he clarifies what he wants (which is usually to repeat what he just said). He doesn't really seem to have a solid plan for what he wants to do, but French class has been the class I'm enjoying the most so far, so it's okay. I am learning bits and pieces, and the classes are ... read more

Today was the least active day of the trip yet, as classes started up today. Briefly, I will be taking 3 classes here at UTT. They are Project Management, French Civilization, and Beginner's French. I only had French Civilization today, so I will put a more detailed description of these classes on here at a later date (it's also 12:30am and I have to be up at 8am, so I need to stop soon). We had to be up at 8:30am to be ready and at the informational meeting by 9am. We made it on time, and were actually some of the first people there. At this meeting, they gave us a rundown of the UTT and what we will be doing in the next few weeks while we stay here. I'll save the parts about ... read more
