Patrick Edwards

My name is Patrick; however, in a world full of many Patricks, this name barely describes myself. I am a guy who enjoys doing anything and everything. My goal is to explore the world and discover who I was made to become. I am currently a sophomore at NC State University. I am majoring in economics and will be studying international marketing at the Instituto Lorenzo de Medici. This trip to Florence, Italy will be my first overseas adventure. I hope to be able to take advantage of new opportunities and to experience another amazing culture. With this blog, I will keep you updated on my journeys and will share with you some of my greatest moments.

When I first got to Venice, I really didn't know what to expect. I've heard a couple stories about the terrible food, rude people, and smelly canals. Besides the dirty water, those weren't entirely true. However, Venice is much more a city of wonder and exploration. It is like an impossible labyrinth which is tough to navigate without a guide. Once you walk down a narrow ally way weaving through tons of people you then go over a bridge and get completely lost. Thankfully, one of my great friends is a Venetian who once studied abroad at my high school. I met up with him and was led to some of the coolest areas of the city. Having a friend who knew his way around perfectly helped us to see areas of the city that no ... read more

Florence pretty much seems like a home to me now. The people are friendly, I have tons of supportive friends, and it is just amazing to look around at all the beautiful architecture and statues. International Marketing is a great class. A lady named Rosanna teaches it and she is a young stylish lady who loves to talk loud and tell jokes like a typical Italian. She calls me the "sexy boy" because on presentation day, I had tons of pictures on my flashdrive that she wanted to look at. Our class also has a guy nicknamed "big boy" because she was frightened by him on the first day and how intimidating he looks. On my bday, she led class in singing "happy birthday sexy boy" it sounds strange and definitely would be weird in america, ... read more

Today, I am back in Florence after a weekend of amazing adventures in Southern Italy. The busride lasted for like 6 whole hours with like 2 rest stops. The first thing we did was a trip to Mt. Vesuvius. The busride up was crazy!! First off, our bus was huge. Secondly, the rode to Mt. Vesuvius was intensely curvy and similar to traveling up to Table Rock Mountain in NC. And lastly, Italians drive crazy. Our busdriver was not scared of passing by other cars and buses with only a centimeter between the two. I was surprised we did not scrape up against some other vehicles. It was hilarious because the driver had to constantly honk the whole way up the mountain to avoid hitting cars coming back down the mountain because the roads were so ... read more

I am so glad to be back in Florence. Rome was a great place and all that but I would not want to call that place home. It is more like a New York City in Italy. The people there aren't all that friendly, the drivers will definitely run you over, and even restaurant waiters tend to be rude. I didn't really enjoy the culture of Rome; however, it was a great place to visit as a tourist. It turns out that the first day was the Italian Founding of the Republic day (kinda like 4th of July). There was this massive parade that went around the Colliseum and even jet planes flew through the sky emitting red white and green smoke. That was quite cool to watch but extremely hot. Also on the first day, ... read more

Well today I was walking down the street when all of a sudden I saw the "situation". I didn't even realize it was him untill someone else from my group informed me (never seen the show). It was kinda strange, he was just sitting there on via San Gallo smoking a cigarette and all these video people were filming. I could have walked up to say hi but I had to get to class. Now for some better stories! The Italian people are quite friendly. Much better than my experience with the Germans. Everytime that German lady came on the PA system on the plane I thought she was telling us we were crashing, she just sounded so angry. I went to the Gelato Festival the other night. I made friends with the lady who sells ... read more

The last few days of my life have had some of the most interesting moments of my life. First off, I've been through so many airports (Raleigh, Charlotte, Munich, and finally Florence). The conveyor-belt things you stand on were so much fun. Then the lady who sat next to me on the plane told me that I was the most exciting person she has ever sat next to on a plane, haha this made me felt good that I brightened her day. The 8 hour flight to Munich was also pretty cool, all the flight attendants looked crazy fancy with their fancy european outfits and look. The flight on the way to Florence was also amazing since we flew over the swiss-alps mountains which were huge and covered in snow! Florence is amazing so far. They ... read more

HERES THE COUNTDOWN TILL ARRIVAL!!!! I will be in Florence, Italy before I know it. My plane lands in Florence on Thursday at around noon I believe. Since the time is all skewed around that means its like 6 am for you guys, UGH thats early! I just need to stay away from a clock that first day and have a mindset that it doesn't matter if I'm 6 hours in the future. That definitely wont be the only thing that I'll find strange. What about the culture!? I feel like I'm going to have a difficult time fitting in with Italian society. Like a dog, I get excited easily and will probably freak out at every little detail that may seem cool to me. Now I've already heard that Italians use this toilet looking ... read more
