February 2 We had agreed that we would have an early start - 530 am to try and get some mileage in before the military convoys started and that essentially today was about upping the pace and pushing through to the finish. We left in the dark, playing dodge the dogs and marveling at the sunrise, hearing the birds and observing the country awakening. The surge of energy brought on by the realization that we would actually be able to finish today was getting us back to a reasonable pace and we soon, we saw ourselves running through active military camps complete with hundreds of soldiers doing drills, tanks and more stuff to make big booms.. In retrospect maybe that had more to do with our increased pace than the finish lol. We had agreed not ... read more

February 1 We left the sparse village before sunrise, hoping to enjoy some early morning quiet time. The daily traffic drama tends to create stress that is better to avoid. Also, we have found that if we are on the road before the sun comes up, we can usually manage close to 30km by lunch time, making our afternoon run a bit more manageable. Well that is how we look at it...... Mr Slim has continued to run with us, each day going further ahead, leaving his moto and no doubt enjoying one last smoke, running to where ever we are and then back to the trusty carrier of all things water and Gatorade. It has been a treat to have he, Ms Alin and even the mini bus driver run with us. Maybe we have ... read more

January 31 We were awake well before dawn, think 3 a.m., thanks to dogs playing ode to the Moon (which was full) in a symphony of howls and barks, one at a time and then all together for the chorus. Roosters eventually joined in for the great finale. Jeff attempted to quiet the noise with his ear plugs but no joy on these enabling a few more hours of sleep. We eventually crawled out of the white heaven, unraveled the mosquito netting and began assembling our gear, tip toeing in the dark. Breakfast was at a local roadside stand, fried rice with egg was the standard when we could. The day not getting any cooler, we set out for what would eventually turn into a couple hours of walking. As we got further into Preah Vihear ... read more

January 30 Learning from the two previous days we set out before dawn. Shuffling to the sounds of roosters and dogs barking non stop, the Cambodian eco-friendly alarm clock . Thankful to be all alone. The red road was to be ours for only a little bit of time...We have started to settle into the running and our bodies are getting into a rhythm. Today is the day we run to Koh Ker and get a chance to have a real bath (well a bucket bath) and sleep in a real bed. Breakfast on the side of the road brings a surprise! Two people from the television channel France 2, based out of New Delhi (http://blog.france2.fr/bureau-inde-france2/index.php/Inde) decided to do a story on us, here we go! Nathalie is now a French movie star! They spent the ... read more

January 29 Day two started off right were we had left off the day before. Ate a couple of bananas and headed out. The crew was to meet us back at the guard post to the entrance for the Beng Mealea sector. Our first 10km done, complete with early morning haze, a beautiful red sunrise partly explained by what was to become know to us as the local atmosphere replete with unending smoke from cooking, waste burning and grass fires it was time for breakfast of bananas, peanut butter and bread. The day started off wonderfully, temps not too hot and the humidity not yet at a full steam. For Jeff however, the day would not stay that way....Each moment of a running day brings its own surprises. One minute all is well and perfect and ... read more

After our first day of running we were treated to a wonderful and most inspiring surprise! Camping in the jungle temple Beng Mealea was more than we could have asked for. While most of the temples in the Angkor area are either restored or under some sort of restoration progress, Beng Mealea has been left completely untouched. It is difficult to imagine what happened to such a beautiful and massive temple but time and the jungle has not been kind, life will prevail and nature had taken a strong foothold... Arriving just before sunset, we were gifted with the privilege of having the temple completely to ourselves. It was quite surreal and proved a soul recharging place for us, a perfect fitting to our first day out.... We camped near the 'police' station and had a ... read more

January 28 Awake long before necessary and reality started to set in. Bags all packed and the excess left the night before with HC for safe keeping, we could only just wait for our ride to Angkor Wat..... We arrived in front of Angkor Wat and gathered on the walkway while Paul and Mr Slim spread out the banner describing our journey. Cambodian and tourist alike, looked at the banner and then at us, shaking their heads. A smile of disbelief and doubt was how it looked from our point of view. Would they be right? Soon enough we were off and the months of nervous energy kept us going through the first few villages and on to the dirt track that would be ours for the next bit. Reality sank in. (Note to self, not ... read more

Before we go into our travels for today, we have to make admit to our naivety at we set out to accomplish by bringing the Katadyn filters with us. We have been filtering water every day for our own use and have come to realize that while the filters are amazing and easy to use, the gap between education and understanding of the technology would guarantee that these filters would be completely out of place in rural Cambodia. We did however discover the real value for these filters and the people who would benefit from their capabilities. People who are on a regular basis, working in the provinces and rural areas need to have reliable, consistent, safe drinking water. We have decided to use these filters to support the individuals we come across who have set ... read more

Another day of traffic adventures and down the NH 6 to the Rolos group of temples. Along the way we fine tuned our perception of Cambodian driving physics. The rules are simple actually and quite effective. No mirror, no signal, no blind spot check. Actually you don't even care what is happening behind you. All that matters is that you toot your horn and just go right a head! Hesitation is the only real rule. You cannot under any circumstances hesitate. Commit fully as those who hesitate will become a road tragedy! A day on the road in Cambodia is incomplete without a 'pigs on motorbike' sighting. A bit of expedition supply shopping rounded out the day and it was time to relax at 'Angkor What ?' for a margarita. Ok, so we really didn't count ... read more
