Went on keyboard hiatus and was happy to let Jeff channel Chaucer for a while, however here goes... Cambodia is paradox. A wonderful one at that. Big first impression, Quebec drivers have nothing on Cambodian No Rules Driving... I dare you to play chicken with a bus when you are driving on the wrong side of the road. Phnom-Penh is almost a sensory overload on ALL fronts. The noise, the smells, the new upper class ramming itself through in those god forsaken Cadillac Escalades right alongside sidewalk dormitories raft with prone souls loosing themselves to chemical oblivion. Meeting Paul and Sophea, and spending time with Lysa and her endless supply of smiles and giggles, seeing Bruce discover a country and mostly himself has been such a gift. Thanks to Sophea, getting behind the scenes of Cambodian ... read more

21 Jan Flights..... So we managed the Ottawa/Toronto flight and the luggage did finally arrive. At the Cathay Pacific check in we had a bit of drama, although contained, with Bruce's ticket. The CP agent was concerned that he did not have an 'onward' ticket from Cambodia....a bit of back and forth and we had his boarding pass. Wondering why his pass is yellow and our are orange. We will find out in about 2 hours. For now it is food and such before everything closes down. Toronto to Hong Kong is a 15 hour flight followed by a several hour layover...wonder what will become of the three of us...oh I almost forgot! Nat had a fan at the CATSA checkpoint! I got the quiz about what the 'pump' things (water filters) were in my carry-on. ... read more

No more sleeps, no more running, except for maybe flights.... Before we get too far along, we wanted to say thanks to a few very wonderful folks. In no particular order: When this dream first started, there was a 'Fear Change' Growler in the kitchen, for all of you, and you know who you are, many thanks for kick starting the dream. Basecamp and family, Mike/Tammy, Linda and Chuck, Kelli and Mark, Brian the physical terrorist, Mark and Emily, Nicole, Cathy the Irish Jersey girl and her family, Jane, Loraine, Louise, Paul D and a very heart felt thanks to the Ottawa Airport Authority. Every one of you are making a difference and your kindness and generosity is amazing. The run would not be a possibility without those who broke us down and those who put ... read more

Ten sleeps to go... we're leaving next week... where did all the time go? Well owing to the sub-frigid temperatures this past week, some of it certainly went exactly nowhere... four consecutive days of running for four consecutive hours on a threadmill kinda nowhere, all this untapped heat energy... suffering extensive brain damage when you end up with the one machine directly facing the Cosmo Channel monitor screen ... I mean really, I need to do what with my hair and I never realized there was a mathematical equation to be derived from how high your heels should be in contrast to your cup size... My head still hurts. (Nat writing here). So like Ray (Zahab) predicted, the "plugging the dam holes with all finger" dance has begun as we start making piles of things to ... read more

Reality has started to become more real arrrgh l'(ity).... First though, what a wonderful holiday time with family and friends! The kids we all here for Christmas along with grand dad, our two 'adopted older children', they are in there '20s'! Food, fun, lots of laughter and of course....running...mostly on the 'dreadmill', not our favorite but thanks to Pump Fitness and Corona, we 'got er done'! Well sort of. We talked to Coach tonight and we are, honestly, more than a bit freaked! But before that....a wonderful and quiet New Year's Eve, just the two of us laughing, thinking of our friends near and far, reminiscing and wondering what 2010 will bring. You know, we had the Cambodia map out and think we may have found a new route to run! Ever hear of the Cardamom ... read more

North America November 20th 2009

ok, so a working week away from Kville. Nat had a conference to attend and Jeff was captive in the hotel, attempting to work...at least he was able to wander the streets at lunch time, suffering through the wonderful food Quebec City has to offer...Nat, well she got egg salad sandwiches with the crusts cut off and tepid coffee. We'd made a promise to each other that we would stick to the training schedule this week no matter what the imposed corporate schedules had in store. As colleagues were headed to the bar, Nat headed to the room to get all decked out for a run. The laughter and comments as she walked past the bar, priceless.... Tuesday is a double run day because Ray likes to punish us twice after a day off. We had ... read more

Jeff and I agree... the most commonly heard reaction by people who hear about our planned adventure... "you're crazy". Tell you, I wish we were. It might just make the daily reality of our training, the logistical planning, that little thing called your "real day job", the ever omnipresent running of a household and child minding seem a little less daunting at times. Especially at 05:30 a.m. when the alarm sounds and Jeff and I have a lottery going for who gets to circuit train at the gym first as opposed to getting to spend an extra 20 minutes in bed... no one really wanting to draw that short straw since we only ran 18 plus kilometers less than ten hours ago. Honestly though I would not trade this for the world. I get to spend ... read more

No hindsight for twenty twenty at this stage but so far this is what we anticipate in a naive and dreamlike at best Hollywood meets Outward bound scenario: Day one...Siem Reap to Beng Mela temple (or close) The mileage for day one has us a bit spooked. Sixty-five KM may not be all that long to some but we are thinking that we need to keep the mileage closer to a 40-50km/day range. We will spend what is left of the daylight seeing what was once a resting location for kings traveling from Angkor Wat to the Great Preah Khan. Dinner will be in on the temple grounds and we will camp under its shadows.... Day two...where did Day One end? This will likely be a familiar theme for us. We will run through the small ... read more

Nat here.... Jeff told one part of the story. How do you describe in a few words a journey that began over a year ago, saw us log hundreds upon hundreds of hours running, walking and sometimes hobbling in all weather, from bogs to deserts, over rocks and through water in temperatures that would grill an egg or make you Walt Disney’s best cryogenic tank buddy should you stop moving for only a few minutes. We are the lucky ones. The kitchen discussion to Nickleback’s songs gave us the seed goal for the adventure, to bring one filter, to try and help one family and leave the possibility that this gesture would pay itself forward, dreaming of the butterfly effect, who knows, that the one person we could help might in turn be the one who ... read more

A day that could not have been predicted…. All this, brings me to today, October 28. Another call with Ray to talk about logistics, training, mental strategies, food and all things that you worry about when you think about running a marathon a day for 6 days. More discussions about water capture and drilling technology, what might work in Cambodia, how to make this sustainable and things that would have never crossed my mind in the past. Ray, many, many thanks for all the help, insight, and support! Good luck to you and the team in Siberia! Just as I hung up with Ray, Dan was on the phone. We talked about the meeting with Ray and Katadyn, (thanks Doug for all the time, technical information and help, much more than I could have ever expected!), ... read more
