As some of you may already know I’ve actually just spent the 6-7 weeks camping out at a place in Antwerp (124 bed hostel). Two things lead me to this interesting situation, the first was a phone call whilst I was in Holland and the second was I needed a rest from travelling. Allow me to explain….. You see if you ever get the wonderful opportunity to go travelling for an extended period of time you’ll soon realise moving around all the time, exploring new places and watching your back when you’re travelling solo can be very tiring…. I know this is going to sound crazy and probably drum up some hate mail from a few of you but seriously… it’s really is hard work sometimes. Also as you may have noticed in my last few ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam July 29th 2009

After leaving Rotterdam and The Hague I headed north towards the Mecca that is Amsterdam or as I now like to call it “Disneyland with Drugs”. I guess it’s just one of those places you have to visit if you get anywhere near Holland. In fact whilst talking to some other travellers along the way I soon realised it’s a rite of passage for some people... one of those places you have to see at least once before you die. So who was I to argue… all I could do was go and check it out for myself. But on the way I had a couple of spare days and unlike most other travellers to Holland I decided that I wanted to see more than just naked woman in standing in windows, legalised cannabis and dirty ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Rotterdam July 24th 2009

Well I finally made it to the Netherlands. I must admit I've been keen to get here since leaving Australia nearly eight months ago. I'm not quite sure what was driving me to visit this country so much but i gotta tell you... Dutch woman riding bikes in gorgeous little summer dress's is as good a reason as any to stay!!! After leaving Antwerp I headed north about one hour into the Netherlands and ended up in Rotterdam about an hour later. Heading across on the train I suddenly realised why they all rides bikes around here.. it's just so flat... On one hand you could almost call it a 'boring landscape' at first glance but upon a closer look you soon realise there's an amazing little network of rivers, canals and well designed farmland. I ... read more

Europe » Belgium July 17th 2009

Belgium, now here’s an underrated country if I’ve ever seen one. It has over a thousand different types of beer, copious amount of waffles and chocolate and from the capital (Brussels) you can be in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt all within two hours by train. Not bad for a little country without its own national language hey! In the north they speak Flemish which is a variation on Dutch and in the south it’s French… weird! In fact Belgium is one of the countries you could easily skip over with a quick glance of the map if you’re not careful. Next time you’re planning a quick European getaway I highly recommend you check it out. Also for those of you who are budget conscious it seems to be somewhat cheaper than it’s western European counterparts ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián July 4th 2009

Now this is a town I could easily spend some more time in one day. I recently just had a great stay in San Sebastian and loved every minute of it. This is a cool little holiday spot I can highly recommend to everyone. As you can see by the pictures it also has the most amazing views. Also I didn’t make up the most beautiful view in the world thing’.. there’s actually a plaque at the top of the lookout saying that.. The day I went up to the lookout I literally just sat there by myself for about 3 hours just staring out at the bay. With the crystal blue water, cool sea breeze and perfect bay it was so nice I didn’t want to leave. San Sebastian is located in the very far ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisboa July 1st 2009

Hello everyone and sorry for the lack of updates recently. I’ve been a bit busy with a new project lately. I’ll do my best to catch you all up over the next couple of weeks... So after leaving Lagos in Portugal I caught the bus up north to the capital, Lisbon. To be honest I didn’t really know anything about Lisbon before getting there other than the fact it that it had 3 of the top rated hostels in the world there for some reason… For me that was as good a reason as any to visit it.. So I promptly checked myself into the number one rated which is called “Travellers House” in downtown Lisbon. First impressions were certainly good and they had a few nice touches I hadn’t seen before which helped me understand ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos June 26th 2009

Lagos…whew!....What a wacky crazy week! I must admit I wasn’t planning to go to Portugal but when every second person you meet is saying.. go to Lagos!... go to Lagos… its hard to ignore. So long story short ‘I went’ and it was loads of fun. Since being there I reckon I’ve told another 20 people to go and about half already have. Basically Lagos is the poor’s man’s Ibiza. It’s a massive party town down in the Algarve in the south of Portugal located right on a beautiful beach. Unfortunately however, the tourist population is about 70% Aussies’ which is a bit frustrating, especially if you’ve travelled half way around the world to get away from them in the first place. In fact, it’s the only place I’ve been where you regularly hear the words.. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Tarifa June 20th 2009

And welcome to the lovely little seaside town of Tarifa, the most southern town in mainland Europe… and from what I was tell, also the windiest! From the minute you step out of the bus you soon realise that it’s time to hang onto your hat and step up the walking pace a little. Tarifa is a great little seaside town and weather is also pretty nice if you don’t mind a bit of wind. Coming from wet and windy Gippsland back home myself, I’ve had my fair share of windy days before so it didn’t really bother me. In fact wind with sun is kind of a nice change after you’ve spent 5 months in hot humid Asia with no wind. Tarifa also happens to be one of the kite boarding capitals of the world ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada June 14th 2009

Oh my god.... I've finally found it... the best tapas city in Spain... no wait... make that Europe! Now I know thats a big call, but let me explain why.. I just spent a week in Granada and I did not buy a single meal or scrap of food for the whole time I was there??? How you ask? Well you see the whole city of Granada has a special local tradition that you won't generally find anywhere else in the world. Whenever you buy a drink such as beer, wine or spirits you get free food in 99% of all bars and cafes in Granada. Its very simple, one drink equals one plate of tapas. Hence two drinks equals two plates of tapas and so on. Sounds to good to be true right.. well it ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 9th 2009

After a couple of crazy weeks in the US is was great to finally hit Barcelona in Spain and relax for a while. I ended up staying there for nearly two weeks and had a great time. It's definitely a city that I could live in for a while one day... mmmm, maybe maybe.. we'll see hey. Once again the contrast from Asia to the US to Spain really was amazing... Going from the fast food driven, 24/7, high octane city of New York across to Barcelona with its afternoon siesta’s and late night dinners was a very welcome change. Don't get me wrong I loved NYC, but Barcelona is very, very liveable. Also any city where public nudity is legal is 'a' ok by me (haha). I'm serious you can walk into your local bank ... read more
