First of all 'Happy New Year' to everyone! I well and truly painted the town red last night and as a result I am now sporting quite the hang over today. Will I ever learn.... probably not! Luckily I arrived in Penang a couple of days ago which meant I had plenty of time to sus out all the options for the big NYE celebrations. Like all big cities (and Penang is definitely a big city to my surprise) it has a good mix of bars, restaurants and caters well for the tourists whilst still being very much third world city at the same time... its actually a really interesting mix. My NYE plan was to basically go from one bar to next in search of English speaking tourists and try to spark up a conversation ... read more

After leaving Singapore I did a quick stop over in Kuala Lumpur for just one night. I'll probably spend some more time there in a few weeks as I have to fly out of there again mid Jan. The good news is I found a good hostel this time and had a good evening there chatting to a couple from the Netherlands and playing pool with them. They were interesting people about my age and they had just spent four months in Jakarta as volunteers, you can imagine all the great stories they had, I was like a dear in the head lights listening to them. I'm already looking forward to settling down somewhere for more than a few nights so I can relax a bit more... It really takes a lot of energy each day ... read more

This was a must for me. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to go to Singapore in the first place. It's world renowned and is considered one of the best along with the San Diego Zoo. So after a leisurely sleep in on my first morning I packed up my little backpack full of all the essentials and headed off to find the darn thing. Didn't quite realise how far away it was and after a 15min walk (to the nearest train station), two trains and a bus I finally made it to the zoo around 2pm. The other thing you need to understand about Singapore and this experience is the heat, its almost unbearable as a tourist. You have about 5 million people packed on a small island scampering around and the ... read more

Wow, what a culture shock! Its safe to say that a; I threw myself in the deep end and b; my first hostel was a nasty experience. I can see I am going to have to spend a little more time from now on choosing them more carefully. Its appears I managed to choose the worst one in pretty much the worst suburb of Singapore.. beginners luck hey. ooh and smell, I don't think I'll ever get that nasty chow-min smell out of my head wafting up from down stairs...eeeehh. This place was amazing, there must have been 30 people staying there and it was only about 10 squares in size. It would have been about the size of a normal two bed room apartment in Australia, no kidding. The toilet cubicles doubled as the shower ... read more

After a very busy week in Melbourne getting organised, packing up and saying good by to everyone I am pleased to say 'we have lift off'. I left Melbourne airport late last night bound for Singapore (via Bangkok... long story, don't ask) and arrived safe and well some 12 hours later. Oh and while I think of it, if any of you guys think that leaving for a trip like this (indefinitely) to go around world on boxing day makes sense... your horribly wrong. Getting ready to go overseas for a long time is one thing but doing it on the tail end of Christmas is simply mad. In hind sight an extra week would have been better. Also big thanks to all the family and Jon and Jim for seeing me off at the airport ... read more

Ever woken up one morning and realised your smack bang in the middle of the rat race and decided you need a change? I have and after a serious of events (somewhat out of my control), it’s made me realise that life’s too short. I decided that it needs to be lived... and not just worked all the time! So here's my plan.... I don't have one! I'm simply going to pack up and go travelling for a while whilst working on a new business/startup.. or should I say go flash-packing (that's backpacking with a few creature comforts) with my laptop! I'm just going to take each day as it comes and see what happens... Now for those who don't know me, this goes completely against the grain. Basically I like to plan everything, cross the ... read more
