Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor March 30th 2009

I think its safe to say I have well and truly tested out the new camera now. In the two days I spent out at Angkor Wat and the other temples I managed to snap over 1200 pictures... admittedly they weren’t all great and there were a lot of double ups but its safe to say I now have every angle covered!! Now its been really hard to choose which ones to include and which ones to leave out so I have put a small collection together for you that will hopefully give you a good summary of all the other temples in the area. As you'll see some of them are amazing and in my humble opinion even better than the great 'Angkor Wat'. I know thats a big call but go there and you'll ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap March 28th 2009

Well first of all let me say Angkor Wat is definitely not the eighth wonder of the world. I would go as far as to say its well within the top three! I've seen a few of them now and trust me, this place is amazing. The thing that surprised me the most was that there is actually dozens of other awesome Wats and other temples in the area too, some very close buy. Anyone who just goes to Siem Reap and only does Angkor Wat is really missing out. I arrived in Siam Reap which is the main town right on the doorstep of Angkor Wat late on a Friday night. I had really been looking forward to this part of the trip since I left Australia months ago and wasted no time the next ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville March 26th 2009

And what a pleasant surprise it was to find Sihanoukville (Which I still can't say properly!) after Phnom Phen at the end of the rainbow/country. It's basically Cambodia's version of southern Thailand and rightly so. After spending nearly 6 weeks inland it was great to get back to the ocean again. There are some great beaches there, even greater sunsets and nice selection of good food to choose from. Well worth a visit, just make sure you check out some of the other beaches and islands in the area too if you decided to go, there even better! Two things in particular stood out for me about this beachside town and unfortunately they were both bad! Now, don't get me wrong as it’s a great little town but there was rubbish everywhere (even on the beautiful ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh March 22nd 2009

After a very relaxing 4 days in the 4000 islands is was time to put everything back in my somewhat 'used' backpack (well at least not as shinny and new as it was a few months ago!) and head to Cambodia. Cambodia wasn't very far away, in fact only about 20km by road but once you crossed the boarder it was about 12hrs to just about anywhere... From what I could tell most people went to Siem Reap first (Anchor Wat etc) but that included an overnight stop on the way as it was too far for one trip?? Not me though, I decided to head straight to Phnom Penh instead. I have been wanting to get a 'proper digital SLR camera' since I started my trip ( I have been using my mobile phone camera ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Don Det March 18th 2009

In case your all wondering, yes that sunset was as good as it looked. In fact it basically looked like that every night... I was amazing. As soon as I arrived on Don Det which is basically a tiny little backpackers island amongst the 4000 Islands in Laos, I got a hot tip to head to the west side of the island for the best huts... basically because of the sunsets. A boy, it did not disappoint. I spent a lovely four days and nights on Don Det and once again it was one of those places 'you had to want to go to' as there was't much else around. It just on the Laos side of the boarder between it and Cambodia and about 3 hrs south of Pakse. Apparently it’s also one of the ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Bolaven Plateau March 15th 2009

Have you ever noticed that very now and then when you really want something, sometimes all you have to do is ask for it? Well I was heading down south from Vientiane a couple of weeks ago in Laos (towards the 4000 Islands) and I really felt like seeing a bit more of the real Laos on the way. So I quickly scanned the good old lonely planet guide (on the way to the bus station I might add!) and noticed a few towns but none of them really stood out as super special. I wanted to see a bit more of the real Laos before hitting the islands and then eventually leaving the country. Well long story short once i arrived at the bus station there actually wasn't too many options it was either the ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane March 15th 2009

Laos is really starting to grow on me. It has loads of potential long term and it’s also a really beautiful country, well worth visiting.. It’s really opened up to tourists in the last 10 years and fingers crossed we don’t all F*&K it up (in the process of trying enjoying it) like we have with most of the other hot spots around the world already! Vientiane is the capital of Laos and like all capitals in Asia it has all the usual things to do and see. Good food, loads of museums, all types of accommodation and about a million motor bikes running around the streets! I was only there for two nights and three days buts that’s enough to see all the main stuff and get a feel for it. Most people I talked ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng March 10th 2009

Vang Vieng in northern Laos, has turned into a very busy little backpacker town over the last few years. Swarms of young backpackers turn up on buses every day to do just one thing and one thing only.... and no, its not caving, kayaking or exploring the local areas (which are beautiful I might add), instead its TUBING! Now when I say tubing down the river this isn't any ordinary type of tubing either. This type of tubing involves copious amounts of alcohol, all the drugs you can imagine (including opium), some of the highest rope swings you have ever seen in your life and a blatant disregard for personal safety. In fact this type of tubing has become a right of passage for most backpackers in their 20's. You can now see why they all ... read more

Asia March 7th 2009

Good news! I now have one of those 'crazy' bus stories that every backpacker seems to end up with at some point. You know the ones with chickens on the roof, washing machines strapped to the back of the bus and bags of rice strategically placed all through the cabin... At the last minute myself and some other backpackers (infact about 20 of us) all decided to ditch the 2 day slow boat trip down the Meekong into Laos and take a 12 hour bus ride instead.. bascially we were all sick of traveling all the time and it was quicker. As it turns out it was a great bus ride even though it was crazy (partially due to the 4 bottles of whisly a few of us shared) but mainly due the fact we got ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai February 25th 2009

Well let me tell you, Pai certainly did not disappoint. There's a reason all the backpackers are talking about it... What a cool little town in the middle of know where.. It's very hippy orientated and everyone is really laid back but I must tell you it’s a great change/escape from both Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Ok, so I flew there ( a whole 24 minutes from Chiang Mai), which I agree is a little over the top but I got some great views on the way in/down. Pai is nestled in a long valley between two large mountain ranges. It gets very hot in the day time and cools right down at night which is a pleasant change to the constant 25-30 degrees I have experienced for the last two months. Once again upon arriving ... read more
