Out late last night watching the fireworks and decided to take it easy today. After a late start (noon) we headed down the coast to Gold Beach. Our road wound along the coastline with high mountains on one side and cliffs dropping down to the crashing surf on the other. We passed many lovely beaches and turn-out viewing spots. We stopped at the Tu Tu Ton Lodge on the Rouge River. This lodge is listed as one of the "1,000 Places To See Before You Die." Very posh and $$$. We went down to the river dock and watched the boats go by. Very relaxing, peaceful, and picturesque. We saw a deer meandering around on the golf course; it seemed to be his home. We continued on and arrived at our destination; Gold Beach. After checking ... read more

Today was the Fourth of July! We spent the day in the little town of Port Orford...population of 1,200 people. Port Orford is the western most city in the continental U.S. The town, nestled along the coast, is a working fishing village (crab, cod, salmon, and sea urchins). The fishing boats are lifted in and out of the water each day by giant cranes at the dolly dock. There are only 2 docks of this type in the U.S. and 6 in the world. Our day started with a big parade through town. Although the sun was out, the cold wind is always blowing. We saw fire trucks, horses, motorcycles, pioneers, youth groups... and even a couple that just got married. For a tiny town, we were impressed by the length of the parade. It was ... read more

Today, we traveled along the ocean from Coos Bay to Port Orford. On the way, we stopped at one beautiful beach after another. The beaches in this area are sandy and expansive but VERY WINDY!! Mary and Nancy went for a walk along the water's edge while Mom sat on the beach in the sun sheltered by a large rock. When we came back, she was partially buried in blowing sand...good thing we didn't leave her there longer!! The monolithic rocks in the bays have interesting shapes and names...Table Top, Seal, Elephant, Face Rock. Face Rock looks like the profile of a woman's face coming out of the water looking skyward. According to local native legend, you can hear her voice in the wind as she warns us to remember the wisdom of our elders. This ... read more

Today was our first day to explore the coast...all along the Cape Arago Loop. The Loop explores 3 state parks, has the largest haul-out of seals and sea lions, and provides breathtaking vantage points all along the way. Bastendorff Beach - A favorite among surfers & kiters for its uninterrupted beach. Sunset Bay State Park - Sandy beach & amazing tidepools all protected by towering sea cliffs. Shore Acres State Park - The jewel of the coast. It is perched on a scenic bluff high above the Pacific Ocean. It began as a private estate with luxurious gardens featuring trees, shrubs, and flowering plants from around the world. Simpson Beach - Situated directly below Shore Acres, a winding path takes you to this secluded ocean cove where you will find crashing waves and views of hundreds ... read more

Another day of new experiences! We drove along the famous Oregon Coastal Sand Dunes. Some areas rise up to 500 feet, extend 2 1/2 miles inland and total 32,186 acres. The wind causes the dunes to change seasonally, covering new areas and sometimes doubling them in height. To stabilize the dunes, grasses and trees have been planted. Of course, we had to take a dune buggy ride. Jimmy was our driver and he asked us if we liked roller coasters. Mom said, "Give us all you got!" So he took the three of us on a WILD AND CRAZY ride. We went up, over and around the dunes all the way to the ocean's edge and drove along the beach. Then back up into the dunes; slipping and sliding while we hung on tight. At one ... read more

Today our adventure took us through the Willamette Valley wine region for visits to numerous vineyards to sample their award-winning wines. It was easy to find our way after several tasting…we just followed the arrows to the next winery. We were feeling no pain by noon. The rolling countryside of Willamette Valley has row upon row of grape vines as far as the eye can see. Each winery was unique...and we enjoyed them all. Mom wanted to stay longer at the last winery, but we convinced her it was time to move on.... read more

Busy, busy day today! First stop was the Pittock Mansion built 100 years ago on top of the highest point in Portland - - - tremendous view, spectacular garden, and opulent interior. Also visited the Rose Test Gardens, a gorgeous 4 acre park which is home to over 400 varieties of roses. Next stop was the Japanese Garden, said to be the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan. The garden is over 5 acres of peaceful tranquility. Then off to Portland’s China Town and the Lan Su Chinese Garden, nestled within the hustle and bustle of the center of the city. Following our tour today, we indulged ourselves in Chinese beer and great food at the Golden Horse Restaurant. After wandering about in China Town, we briefly joined a pub crawl and stopped for desert ... read more

Can't believe it has been a year since our trip to Paris. It only seems like yesterday when we were being serenaded on the steps of Sacre' Coeur, Basilica of Montmartre. This year we decided to keep our adventure state side...continuing on a Pacific coast tour that Mary & Mom began several years back. While we are going to meet up in Portland, we will pick up where they stopped, Florence Oregon. We will then continue down the coast to the Redwood Forests in California. On our way back up, we will tour through the mountain and lava fields of central Oregon, and then end our trip along the Lewis & Clark Trail at Mt. Hood. Planes, Trains, and Automobile. That is how our adventure begins. Nancy & Mom fly from Michigan. Mary takes the train ... read more
