Geo: 54.6896, 25.2799This morning we were taken on a guided tour of Vilnius, mainly its Old Town. Our first stop was a viewing point above the city where we could see a great Panorama of the old and new parts of the city. Amelia was our local guide. She is very knowledgeable and also very proud of her home town. From the hilltop we went down to the Old Town. We left the bus at the only remaining gate of the Old Town's wall. This bears the original coat of arms of the Dukes of Lithuania, supposedly the oldest in Europe. As we walked under the gate we could hear singing. Of course, being Sunday morning, mass was being held in the churches. The particular one from which the singing was coming was above the gates ... read more

Geo: 54.6896, 25.2799Today was a day of travelling. Our first full day on the bus!! We left Warsaw at 8am and headed north to Lithuania. It was a beautiful sunny day, too good to waste on a bus trip however, these things must be done. Our travel took us through rural Poland and Lithuania. Both are very flat countries and also very green. We listened to our tour guide explain about optional excursions and then she got on to history and politics of Poland. A litle is fine but she managed to talk for nearly one and a half hours!! And you think I can talk!! We stopped for lunch at Augustow where we had 75 minutes to get some lunch ad have a look at the town. This was a pretty town with a very ... read more

Geo: 52.2449, 21.0119I am sitting in a Noodle cafe in Warsaw across the road from our hotel on John Paul 11 street. The hotel wanted to charge us $36 per hour to connect but this cafe advertised free internet so we have had a good chinese dinner and an internet session!!!We flew here yesterday from Glasgow via London Gatwick. The travelling took up most of the day. At 6pm we met with our guide and fellow travellers for our 14 day tour that will take us from here, through the Baltic States to St Petersburg, Moscow and back here through Belarus. Should be interesting. After a briefing we walked down to the "Old Town". In reality most of this area is less than 50 years old as most was destroyed by the Nazis during the war. ... read more

Geo: 55.8656, -4.25722Today we set out to explore Glasgow. We drove into the city centre and found a car park at the Buchanan Galleries. This is a large shopping complex in the middle of Glasgow. There are two streets that have been turned into malls here, Sauchiehall St and Buchanan Street. The latter is the more attractive as it is lined with elegant 19th century buildings which have been largely occupied by modern stores like Borders. We wandered along, browsing through the shops. We were still looking for a McEwen scarf which had proved elusive. We found one in a kiltmaker's shop, Hector Russell's. I was pleased. We had lunch just off George Square in a Cafe Uno which is a chain restaurant but inexpensive and good food. In George Square they were holding the Glasgow Piping ... read more

Geo: 55.8656, -4.25722We headed of f from Plockton this morning about 9-30am. Drove to Kyle of :Lochash, the entrance to the Isle of Skye. We drove over the Skye bridge and headed to Portree the capital of Skye. The scenery was great, hilly counrty with plenty of green and purple and of course marvellous views across the water. Stopped in Portree for a short time and walked along the wharf. We then decided to drive back to Kyle and head southward. Stopped at Dornie at Eilean Dorne castle. Fletcher was desperate to take a photo so drove up into the hills but the viewpoint there did not give us a good view. In the end we had lunch at the local pub in Dornie. It had been a lovely morning with sunny skies. As we drove south , ... read more

Geo: 56.4245, -3.46242We awoke to sunshine in Bamber Bridge. I was deceived so wore a T shirt and shorts. After breakfast and packing up we bade farewell to Cath and Chris after they had steered us to a petrol station and the entrance to the Freeway. We had had a fantastic time with them. Thanks, Cath and Chris for your wonderful hospitality!!!We drove on the M6 towards Edinburgh. the clouds gathered and the rain bucketed down. The scenery was great, what we could see, green fields, hills, stone fences and sheep. After Carlisle we headed up the A7, the historic tourist route to Edinburgh. It continued to rain, we listened to the England/South Africa 4th Test match and we finally stopped for some lunch about 1-50pm in Stow at the Cloud Cafe. After an half hour break ... read more

Geo: 53.7577, -2.70344After a fabulous night at the theatre watching Spamalot we drove here yesterday. It was a miserable day, lots of rain and cloud. We picked up our Ford from Hertz at Marble Arch and proceeded to find the M1. Our route was simple, the M1 to the M6 and straight on to Preston. Apart from an initial holdup due to an accident, we found the going straightforward, stopping only for a sandwich at one of the reststops.Approaching Preston we rang Chris and he guided us to Ye Old Hobe Inn where he and Cath soon joined us. It was great to see them again. After a convivial drink we followed them to their house in Greystoke Close in Bamber Bridge, a pretty place with a lovely garden, all Cath's work!!(though Chris insists he mows the lawns)After ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236This morning we headed to Buckingham Palace to visit the State Rooms which are only open to the public during August and September. We had bought our tickets yesterday which saved hours in the queue and arrived there just before 10am, our scheduled time. Fletcher had done this once before but I had not had the opportunity of being here as usually school demanded me to be present there. The State Rooms were designed by John Nash and are very elegant and sumptuous. There is an abundance of gold and white in the elaborate ceilings and the various drawing rooms are named for their different colours, green, red, blue white, etc. The magnificent ballroom was set up as it would be for a State Dinner with the full table settings and glassware displayed. I did ... read more
