There’s a sign in Seal Harbor, “SLOW DOWN DON’T KILL OUR KIDS” with blood running from the word KILL that we laugh at. I guess tourists driving curvy mountain roads at fast speeds scares the locals! Acadia is a lot like other national parks – pine forests, lakes, marshes, mountains and rocks – but it has the ocean coast and there is development nearby. Most of the parks out west are surrounded by National Forests and pretty much not much! The coast in Acadia is mostly rocky, but there are a few sand beaches. We haven’t seen any wildlife except for a deer, probably due to it being intermixed with populated areas. As I said earlier, the park is unique in that it isn’t all in one geographic chunk, so you can be driving on a ... read more

Rick and Max left at 6 am to hike to the top of Cadillac Mountain. They stopped at Eagles Crag for breakfast. It was about a 4.5 mile hike. Maggie and Chrissy showered then drove to pick them up. The views from Cadillac are amazing. Afterward we parked in Bar Harbor (quite a challenge) checked out where to walk to Bar Island, then had lunch at 59 Cottage (at 59 Cottage St.) Then we walked to Bar Island. An hour and a half before and after low tide you can walk to Bar Island from Bar Harbor. The water level goes down 10 feet (according to a fellow traveler). Went to Jordan Pond House for afternoon tea. Jordan Pond House is a historical location in the park which serves tea and popovers. We didn’t have tea, ... read more

8/2 – Sorry for the technical difficulty. I hope people can see this post. As I said earlier, this is a new blog for us – the blog we used the past two years has closed down. First thing this morning we stopped at the cutest little library in Seal Harbor to try to figure out this stupid blog situation. Then spent the rest of the morning today trying to figure out how to navigate Acadia and what we wanted to see. There is a bus system with multiple lines. There is a “park loop” road, from which most of the main attractions are, but not our campground, and you can only get on the road in 2 or 3 places. Mount Desert Island contains most of Acadia, but also has private land including Bar Harbor ... read more

Today we drove to Acadia. Took the Lake Champlain Ferry into Vermont, then drove across Vermont and New Hampshire. Drive was on two lane roads and we saw a lot of moose signs, but no moose. Other drives it was like moose crossing sign, cemetery, body of water. Only passed 2 McDonalds in 8 hr. drive.... read more

Went to Ausable Chasm “The Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.” We thought it resembled Zion Canyon more because it was very narrow. It was still very beautiful. Saw Rainbow Falls, hiked part of the chasm and tubed in the river. It was very commercial and the tube ride was so slow – at points we were not moving at all – and short, which was disappointing. We wish we had gone kayaking instead. We don't have any action photos from tubing.... read more

We drove to Lake Placid to check out the Olympic sites. We found the Olympic stadium and the winter sports museum. We paid and checked out the museum, then found the tourist bureau. After that we saw the ice rinks for the 1932 and 1980 (Miracle on Ice) hockey games. Also saw the outdoor speed ice skating rink that Eric Hayden skated on. We were bummed that it cost money to visit other Olympic sites (Whiteface Mountain and jumping complex) and decided instead to hike to Ampersand Mountain. Rick and Max made it to the top (1700 ft up, 5.4 miles round trip), but Maggie and Chrissy didn’t quite reach the top. All were exhausted. Went to eat at Little Italy (litaly) the first place we found in Saranak Lake. Delicious. The area we are staying ... read more

left at 5 am and drove to Buck Pond, Onochiota, PA in the Adirondack Park. Our drive was smooth. Rick was surprised that there were towns in the Adirondack Park – like Old Forge and Inlet – that had cute little downtowns with shops and restaurants. He thought it would be like a National Park. It is kind of unique – a park, but there is development. I was surprised by the number of bodies of water we passed. There were lot of vacation spots and a lot of cars had canoes or kayaks. Buck Pond is about 30 minutes to the closest “town” of Saranack Lake and about 45 minutes to Lake Placid. When we arrived we walked to the beach of Buck Pond and the kids swam. The lake was beautiful, surrounded by mountains ... read more
