Madeira Beach KOA, St. Petersburg, Florida We don't particularly like KOA's - they are more like Disneyland's than campgrounds, what with all the amenities and the high prices that go with that. I suppose that since they spell it with a 'K' instead of a 'C' they can get away with it, but we call it 'glamping'. (I suppose, though, that all things are relative - there are those that would argue that our way of 'camping', in an RV trailer with a furnace, an A/C, and a refrigerator, isn't true camping either.) But sometimes we just can't avoid it, either because we couldn't find an alternative, or because what we want to see just isn't near a state park. In this case, it was a combination of both - Joan wanted to see a couple ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Tallahassee March 26th 2017

Tallahassee RV Park, Tallahassee, Florida We logged another 250 miles yesterday. But it was green-dot travel, pretty much the whole way. We followed US98 along the coast all the way down to Appalachicola and then went north to Tallahassee. Views of the ocean are frequent, and when you can't see the ocean, you are looking at stunning ocean-front homes, some small, some huge. And when you can't see the homes, it's because of thick stands of Florida pine. Florida is flat - very flat. Joan and I started laughing when, just after crossing into Florida from Alabama (at Florala), we saw a sign that we had just driven over the highest point in the state at a nose-bleeding 345 feet. (This low elevation is going to become even more significant as the world's oceans rise over ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Gulf Breeze March 25th 2017

Gulf Islands National Seashore, Gulf Breeze, Florida It was sort of a combination down-day, sightseeing day. It didn't help that it was completely overcast and pretty windy. We didn't have anything really specific planned and, being a little tired, sleeping in sounded attractive. On sleep-in days, though, I still have to wake up with the alarm at six, get dressed, then walk and feed the girls. For reasons I just don't understand, they don't get the idea of sleeping in. In fact, usually, when the days are getting longer, they are up on the bed crawling all over us just before six. Kind of hard to snooze when Smooch is on my body like a mountain goat, pawing at my neck and looking expectantly into my eyes. So the dogs wake up when THEY want to ... read more

Gulf Islands National Seashore, Gulf Breeze, Florida "Raging, restless, robust, gentle, soft, calm. ...Rhythmic, shifting, beckoning, the voices of surf and sand: the sands speaking, the sands of all time." Jesse Earle Bowden quoted in Gulf Islands: The Sands of All Time. I'm not the only one with a fascination, even a longing for the sensations of the beach. The rhythmic surf pounding on the shore and then rushing up the sand to paint a fresh canvas; the salty tang in the mouth; the cool breeze on the skin; the gritty sand sifting through your toes only to be washed by the cold water. Although I'm a mountain boy, born and raised in the Rockies, far from any ocean - or maybe because of that - I have always been drawn to the smells, sounds, textures, ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Gulf Breeze March 23rd 2017

Fort Pickens Campground, Gulf Breeze, Florida We hitched up, took showers in the really nice football belle's bathhouse, and headed out to our next location. We drove a total of about 260 miles a little west, but mostly South. In fact we drove south absolutely as far as we could - the road dead ends at the Gulf Coast. Although long, it was an interesting drive, taking us through coastal plain forests dense with assorted evergreen trees, punctuated by a few budding hardwoods. Terrain was soft rolling hills, nothing really challenging. We took two-lane Alabama and US highways most of the way, so speed limit was usually around 55, which we can do with the trailer fairly easily. We didn't have firm lunch plans, but I really wanted to experience some homestyle southern cooking while in ... read more

North America » United States » Alabama » Tuskegee March 22nd 2017

Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site Tuskegee, AL This was another itinerary item added by Joan as part of her rebellion against the tyranny of The Bucket List. (See The Whiskey Rebellion post for another one). These two sites were the reason that we traveled to Auburn at all. Although administered by the Park Service, National Historic Sites are not part of my bucket list because there are just too many of them, requiring lots of added travel to incorporate, and because they are usually just good for an hour or two of sightseeing. You end up traveling a ways, usually spending an extra day camping for not a whole lot of added value. But Joan wanted to see these two sites specifically, and so we added this jaunt to the itinerary. ... read more

North America » United States » Alabama » Auburn March 21st 2017

Auburn, AL Not a whole lot to report about yesterday. We slept in, then I wrote my blog and Joan did some drawing. Finally followed that with breakfast, or rather brunch, of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. It was overcast most of the morning, but the sun came out in the afternoon and we saw temperatures in the 80s. I pulled out my private casual shorts (shorts with a few holes in them, unfit for public viewing) and my sandals. Southern summer has suddenly arrived. We took the dogs for a walk around the RV park. Strangely, both of them actually seem to be a little uncertain about this environment. I don't know if they have smelled a frightening animal, or they are just overwhelmed by how different things are. Smooch doesn't want to be outside much ... read more

North America » United States » Alabama » Auburn March 20th 2017

Auburn RV Park, Auburn, AL We hitched up, said goodbye to Lake Tobesofkey, and programmed Auburn, Alabama into the car's GPS system. It offered us three different routes, one of which took us all the way back up to Atlanta and then back down, using interstate highways the whole trip. Not wanting to revisit that mess, we opted for a leisurely drive over Georgia state and county roads to Columbus and then US 80 on into Auburn. We stopped for lunch at a brew pub in downtown Columbus located in one of those restored downtown areas. We were able to find parking on a side street that wasn't busy. Food was tasty but not overwhelming. We both had chicken dishes, Joan's came with shrimp in a Cajun style sauce, mine had a mushroom gravy and mashed ... read more

North America » United States » Georgia » Macon March 19th 2017

Ocmulgee National Monument, Macon, Georgia If Russell Cave was a bit of a disappointment, Ocmulgee definitely was not. Ocmulgee is the name of a river that runs through here, and a thousand years ago the Indians built a very complex settlement. They were part of a civilization known as Mississippian, scattered through the south, but concentrated along tributaries of the Mississippi River as far north as Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio. They built huge earthen mounds, as large as football fields and as tall as fifty feet. Mostly, these mounds served as platforms, possibly as locations for other grand structures, such as temples or the homes of the elite. One of these mounds, the funeral mound here at Ocmulgee, served as a cemetery. It has been a rich source of artifacts for archeologists. In addition to the ... read more

North America » United States » Georgia » Macon March 18th 2017

Lake Tobesofkey State Park, Macon, Georgia One of the things I hate the most about these trips is driving through big cities. When you live in a town of 1900 people, even a trip to Taos can be a small nightmare. Dodging other cars, navigating unknown roads, and trying to find places you want to go is, well, difficult and even more challenging, the older you get. Having fun yet? Now add a 5000 pound trailer behind you, and then do it through the biggest city in the Southeast - Atlanta, Georgia. If you don't think that is enough fun, then do it on Friday afternoon, on a Saint Patrick's Day holiday when there are multiple accidents on the freeway and construction zones every ten miles or so. Now are we having fun? Well, that's what ... read more
