Reading Creekside in Auburn Auburn, AL
Not a whole lot to report about yesterday. We slept in, then I wrote my blog and Joan did some drawing. Finally followed that with breakfast, or rather brunch, of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. It was overcast most of the morning, but the sun came out in the afternoon and we saw temperatures in the 80s. I pulled out my private casual shorts (shorts with a few holes in them, unfit for public viewing) and my sandals. Southern summer has suddenly arrived.
We took the dogs for a walk around the RV park. Strangely, both of them actually seem to be a little uncertain about this environment. I don't know if they have smelled a frightening animal, or they are just overwhelmed by how different things are. Smooch doesn't want to be outside much at all, and even Fleur seems to be watching us and following our lead much more than usual. Normally they like all the new smells and sounds, but something about this place is getting to them. (Should WE be worried?)
Big chore yesterday was getting laundry done. We had three machines worth, including the bed sheets. But I guess we're coming up on two weeks of being on the road, so why not? The campground laundromat is in the main building and there we got a chance to meet the 'grand dame' of the place. I had a hard time keeping from laughing. She is a prim and proper lady of maybe 50 and was wearing a blue dress with high heels. Her gray hair was perfectly coifed kind of up, not quite in a bun, but, oh hell, I don't know what to call it. Her makeup was picture-perfect and she had on jewelry. I swear, she looked like a hostess to a D.A.R. Luncheon. She's dressed to the nines running an RV park.
Then we checked out the sign on the front door. She actually held 'office hours': 9:00 - 10:00 AM, then closed for a long lunch, I guess, and open again from 2 - 6 PM. Oh, and she was unavailable on Sundays except 'by appointment' and then, only after church. She's not running an RV park - for her its holding court! We did hear, from one of the workers, that she's a fan of corgis, so we will probably take the girls over this afternoon for 'an introduction'. She is what I would have to call, a Southern Belle.
We are seeing a lot of signs here in Auburn that we are really in the Deep South. Football is obviously big here. One option the RV park offers to its customers is a special deal on campsites during the entire football season. You bring your trailer or motorhome in during August and select a site. Then you leave the thing there until November or December or whenever football season ends - that way you have a permanent place to come to. Then, on game days, the RV park runs shuttle bus service to the stadium. I guess the idea is that you can have a tailgate party all weekend long and not worry about having to drive. And if you purchase one of these plans, the RV park even prints up a little sign with your name on it to welcome you to your football home. Now that's a commitment to football that I will never understand.
In addition to getting rested up and the laundry done, we also stocked up on a few grocery items and I had to exchange one of the propane tanks. Life goes on. But we did have a chance to just sit out in the shade next to the creek. Joan is reading 'Dark Money' about the Koch brothers rise to power. Understanding that stuff in the context of today's politics is very interesting and more than a little frightening. I'm reading from my Southeastern Indians book about their philosophical and religious beliefs. That's fascinating to me because of how similar their origin stories are to, well, everybody else's!
After a dinner of grilled sausages and salad, we hit the sack. More sightseeing today.(17.1.13)
