When we returned to our dock we saw that a tall ship was just being positioned by a tug in front of the Prinsendam. Wow!! What a size comparison between the two ships! I went up to the top deck right away to take pictures and had fun observing all the business of this docking chanal. So many different kinds of boats and ships. There is to be a Tall Ship Festival in the near future here in Warnemunde, so this Russian Tall Ship is here for the Festival. This is a friday afternoon so there are lots of people swarming around on the dock and music from the band in a dockside restaurant. Wa Whoo !! the weekend is here! Warnemunde is a major beach resort area for Germans and we can see the crowds ... read more

This morning I woke up, looked out our window to see our luggage being off-loaded directly below us. We went to our last breakfast at the Lido Restaurant and sat at our favorite breakfast table. Gathering at our debarkation point, our Road Scholar group left the ship together and boarded our coach to Heathrow airport. After a surprisingly long ride we arrived at Heathrow and began the "rat maze" of departure. You know, find the right terminal, get your luggage off the bus, walk in to check in, get in line (only the beginning!!) Crowds of people, all looking to find their correct airline, check-in line, weighing of bags, security line, departure gate, departure time. ACH!!! At last, we're at the gate and find a student group of about 35 (all with their orange back packs) ... read more

After a relaxing day cruising through the Kiel Canal, we changed clothes into our Formal wear for the Farewell dinner in the La Fontaine dinning room. Laurieanne had "cooked up" an event for the dinner. Five people (including John) were going to enter the dinning room wearing masks and see what the reaction would be. I was the official photographer for the event. Laurieanne had previously bought the masks at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. So we met in the lounge outside the dinning room and they, Barb, Jean, Lynn, John and Laurieanne got their masks on. I took the required pictures and we all entered with me taking pictures along the way. The reaction was laughing and exclaiming!! Everyone liked the masks and enjoyed the laughter. Then we sat down and had a lovely dinner ... read more

Right after breakfast, I went up to the top deck to view and take pictures of the approach to the Kiel Canal. There were already people (with chairs) along the rail so I found a space and took pictures between people. The whether was good - clear and sunny. The Kiel Canal, the world's busiest artificial waterway, links the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. An average of 250 nautical miles are saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of the way around the Jutland Peninsula. During its building stages, naval strategies were important (the German navy wanted to link its bases in the North Sea with the Baltic Sea instead of having to sail around Denmark) - Today the canal is used for trade between the countries of the Baltic with the rest of the ... read more

When we returned to Pier 7 from Rostock, we saw that a Tall Ship was being maneuvered in to the dock right in front of the Prinsendam. WOW!! What a size comparison between the ships! I immediately went up to the top deck to take pictures, and had fun observing the busy - ness of the channel. There is to be a Tall Ship Festival in the near future here in Warnemunde and this Russian Tall Ship is here to participate in the Tall Ship Sail. Warnemunde is a major German resort destination and this is a friday afternoon. So there were plenty of people on the beach and walking the streets. The Tall Ship at the dock was generating plenty of interest among the crowd and there were lots of people going across the channel ... read more

This morning with Andres, our Guide, we stroll down the pedestrian street, Kropeliner Strabe, and do some shopping there for post cards and misc impromptu buys. Then we stop at Rostock University, the oldest university in northern Europe, to learn about the educational system in Germany. Next we explored the town of Rostock, town square, City Hall, shopping street and St. Mary's Church. St. Mary's Church is a large brick gothic church constructed in the 13th century. Over the many years it has been reconstructed into the Basilica it is today. John & I went inside and viewed the massive organ, the gothic pulpit and large stained glass windows. Very impressive. On to lunch at a local restaurant, where we all enjoyed "dark beer soup". After lunch we toured around Rostock and Warnemunde . Andres lives ... read more

Today's "at sea" day we have the last two lectures by Kristof. In the morning, ❇The vikings - raiders, traders , settlers❇ and after lunch, ❇Cold war and daily life in East Germany❇ These subject were very interesting. We bid farewell to Kristof and Vibeke because they leave the ship early tomorrow morning to return to Denmark for a teaching assignment there. Everyone says, "Let me take a picture of you before you leave" Fairwell Kristof (waving goodbye) The rest of the time we rested, ate, and I had a chance to take pictures of favorites, all around the ship.... read more

This morning, after breakfast I went up on deck to photograph our passage through the Stockholm Archipelago, a series of islands leading to the City and Harbor of Stockholm. It was a clear day so the views were very good and fascinating to see. It was the first time I discovered I could look over the railing and see the bridge on both sides of the ship! After we were on our excursion coach (the new gold model), I could look up and see the bridge from the dock. Our guide decided to take us to see the Vasa Museum first, to hopefully avoid the crowd of tourists in the afternoon. The warship Vasa was ordered to be built by King Gustavus Adolphus from 1626 - 1628.The ship foundered and sank after sailing less than a ... read more

What fun it is to discover something unexpected and pleasant. Tallinn was totally unknown to me and therefore was a pleasant surprise. We started with a walking tour through its Old town through its two totally different parts:Upper Town and Lower Town. Tallinn was once a free trading town, a member of the Hanseatic League. We see vestiges of this in its guild houses, warehouses, unique Town Hall in Gothic style and Churches with charming slender towers. We visited the Dome church and observation platform where a great view opens over the city. After having lunch at a local restaurant, we returned to the ship and heard Kristof's next lecture ❇Monarchy in Scandinavia❇ We then had time to rest and change into formal clothes for our second formal night at dinner.... read more

On the fourth of July, while in St. Petersburg, The staff of the Prinsendam had a Barbeque all afternoon on the Lido Deck. The food was delicious and the many food carvings were very decorative. At dinner in La Fountain dinning room the waiters and staff were all dressed up in the Stars and Stripes with a few "Uncle Sams" thrown in. ... read more
