Denham was the most westerly camping spot in our journey around Australia. We drove back to the North Western Highway, stopping at Shell Beach and overnighting at Hamelin Station and then Edaggee rest area before moving to Carnarvon. On our way out to Denham we heard what sounded like a rusty windmill and pump squeaking on endlessly. But no matter where we looked we could not find a windmill. We had only just arrived at Hamelin Station when the same sound could be heard. Yes there was a windmill, but it wasn't squeaking. We looked and listened and the sound was coming from inside a thicket. A lot of looking and a couple of questions we were told that the noise came from a chiming wedge bill, a bird about 20cm long, but very rarely seen, ... read more

Sunday 21st Our northward venture continued from Kalbarri eastward out to the Brand highway (Also known as the North West Coastal Highway) through the Kalbarri National Park. The countryside here is gentle rolling country and easy driving, with the usual for Australia, watch for Kangaroos and emus. The countryside here is again coastal heath as seen in many parts of Australia, only the plants are taller. More rain/nutrition, but not suited for agriculture. Marg was at the wheel and we were passed by a truckie who was unaware that his ice-cream truck back door was swinging open wildly. Marg flashed headlights, tooted the horn and I tried several times on UHF Ch 40 to make contact and alert the driver, but to no avail. About 20 Ks later we caught up with him as he had ... read more

What an exciting and rewarding day we have had! Not as cold as yesterday, in fact getting to a top of 24C this afternoon. After all the normal household chores we headed out to Rainbow Jungle on the southern outskirts of Kalbarri. Along the way we picked up bread and vanilla slice from the local bakery for lunch. We had heard good reports of Rainbow Jungle, so decided to spend an hour in their aviaries. Well, the hour actually went on to be 2 hours. If you enjoy bird photography, this is a good place to see a variety of parrots (big and small), many in a free flying aviary. There are some exceptions. The macaws, well they are accessible but not free to fly when the public are there. There was a pair of juvenile ... read more

BRRRRR, it was really cold this morning. The el-cheapo thermometer in the MH even refused to give a number for the temperature. Apparently this morning was the coldest morning on record this year at Kalbarri, and adding to the low temp was a steady breeze adding a chill factor. However, as intrepid seekers of photo opportunities, we rallied and the four of us went into the Kalbarri National Park. This park covers a huge area, but today we wanted to visit Nature's window and Z Bend. The road into the park has been closed for some time, and as a school holiday concession, it would be opened briefly today, Saturday and Sunday, then closed until October. The road (through sandy/rocky heathland) had badly deteriorated, and there was a need for new toilets and parking areas to ... read more

Thursday arrived with clear skies and a cool breeze. No longer the gusty winds of the past several days, so on the road by 8:30 heading north. The first planned stop was Northampton, a heritage listed town first gazetted in 1864, making this the second oldest town in WA. The area prospered with a solid history of cropping and grazing as well as a variety of mining ventures. The town was also the terminus for WA's first public railway linking this area with the port of Geraldton. Modern transport has seen the demise of the railway dominance of yesteryear. Taking pride of place in the main street is the Catholic Church. The Architect for this church project also built the Catholic Cathedral in Geraldton as well as several others in the region. While there are some ... read more

We have had a great couple of months in Perth before today heading off to tackle stage two of our trip around The Block. Our family have been building a new home north of Perth so we have enjoyed seeing the progress from a concrete slab when we arrived to a house close to lock up. Their home looks to be very spacious, and they have taken care with sun angles for their layout as they do have long hot summers here. We have spent weekends with them enjoying a great variety of different activities. Ben is a Lego Maniac not only building to plan, but adapting ideas creating some great items. He has been building houses over the last couple of weeks and has made quicker progress than Mum and Dad. Beckie is a potential ... read more

Yanchep (north of Perth) has proven a good base for exploring the region as well as being handy to the family for weekend activities and close to the house they are building. Tuesday awoke with a broad sunny smile and the forecast was good so we decided to do a day trip north from Yanchep. Guilderton is a small coastal town on the banks and mouth of the Moore River. The river forms a large protected lagoon before crossing a very white beach into the radiant blue Indian Ocean. Once again the beach here is protected by a couple of off shore reefs making it good for both swimming and fishing. The 1000 m gap from beach to first reef is apparently a great fishing trench and was being trolled when we were there. Guilderton has ... read more

Travel is full of surprises, and we had one this week that has adjusted our planning a little. We had planned to leave Yanchep (Perth) on 10th July, but we have found that the Kalbarri National Park road is closed for major upgrade, but provision has been made for access during the WA school holidays. So we will stay here for another week or so. During the week we made good use of the Perth transport system. We took an early bus from Yanchep to Clarkson station, and then two trains to get us to Fremantle - about 2 hours as the bus does an amazing Tiki Tour. Sorry, maybe Cooks Tour might be better understood. The days travel was marred by the writer leaving the small rucksack on the bus. (Fortunately we were able to ... read more

Captain Cook Tours have a reputation for good quality tourist activities, so Mary and David, Marg and myself decided that on a bright sunny day, a lunch cruise on the Swan River from Perth to Fremantle return would be a good activity. It certainly proved the highlight of the week as we climbed out of the "Frustration Ranges' that have bugged us since being on the West Coast. The way ahead showed its first run out of the 'Frustrations' on Tuesday when the Cardiologist confirmed what I felt would be the results from the combined echo and stress tests that all was generally well with my heart, and I just need to live with the palpitations when they occur providing they stop in a reasonable space of time. Next was Marg's Dell computer. The repair man ... read more

Do you like visiting the zoo? I do, Marg does, but we had one grandchild that was a little uncertain, but came along anyway. Most major cities, and indeed some smaller centres run zoos, some formal, some more like a safari park. Perth Zoo is formalish, located in beautiful park lands with well signposted paths and maps pointing to the various types of animals/birds etc. You do need to put aside a whole day for the visit. We walked for 5 hours and still skipped big chunks of the park. Many Perth families become 'Friends of the Zoo' and can come and go as often as they wish, but for visitors that's not practical. We were impressed by the park even before we looked at the interesting creatures in their displays. The trees and shrubs are ... read more
