So, the end has come. My travels will continue for a bit, but thank you for all your comments and interest. The last few weeks have been amazingly packed, with everything from visitors (four, wow) to visits. There was a ball (and doesn't the sky look light after an all-night ball), a 2-day medical ethics seminar, and good-byes. See you in the States.... read more

Backing out of the Globe, running through London, past the London eye, laughing as we pass the other tourists, to catch a bus that leaves in 20 minutes from by Westmister. And then --- arriving, in time, to find: the bus has been delayed for an hour. Oh, traveling :). Why there were no pictures: I had the umbrella; she had the camera. We pack light if one is to carry essentials. Also, it was a day trip, organized by OSAP, with a walking tour of Westminster. The Globe was lovely, and the genuine groundling experience -- genuine. ... read more

A Stage!" And on a stage is Shakespeare played. I was very, very lucky, to be allowed to come along with the Shakespeare students on Wednesday and see *As You Like It* at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford . . . hold out for Winchester's Round Table. There are an awful lot of photos of the cathedral but also some really nice ones near the end having nothing to do with the cathedral. Please take that ex-cathedra!... read more

The last week has still been a whirlwind, with lectures, high Anglican services, cathedrals, Shakespeare, and theatre. Yet I have to stop a moment here, with Emily Dickinson for Grandpa: Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste, And I had put away My labor, and my leisure too, For his civility. We passed the school where children played At wrestling in a ring; We passed the fields of gazing grain, We passed the setting sun. We paused before a house that seemed A swelling of the ground; The roof was scarcely visible, The cornice but a mound. Since then 't is centuries; but each Feels shorter than the day I first su... read more

Today we should have an interesting day . . . Yesterday had a lecture in one of tallest spires of Oxford and of course later climbed to the top. But this posting is all about pictures. My boat didn't row on to Summer Eights this week but chch (Christ Church) still has 4 boats . . . Saturday will determine it all -- blades of glory or blades of grass? Notably, this week took two day trips, one to Cambridge, one to Hampton Court. In Cambridge, was in awe of the folios in Trinity College's library and the chapel at King's College. Spend loads of time in the library, on buses reading, or typing away at the untypable paper. Service and working on Sunday; tute & library, then hall dinner Monday; Cambridge & hall dinner Tuesday; ... read more

This has been an amazing week, complete with drenching showers, an umbrella purchase, and a cold. No pictures at the moment: Yes, I am being a bad tourist. But I am also a student, and sitting in the Bodleian Library encased in bookshelves tends to drive cell phones and technology out of thought. As do dons who say the internet is a passing fad and email was invented for unnecessary conversations. I'm a visiting student at Christ Church, an instant inductee into a world of traditions, words such as pidge, and formal dining hall. And tons and tons of history. Literally, from my college, founded in the 1500s, to a Saxon tower off Cornmarket St. (pedestrians only, lots of shops) to Christopher Wren's first building, the Sheldonian Theater in front of the Bodleian Library buildings. Things ... read more

Rain, yes, it's here. But rain and all those other details . . . I think to spare you the hundreds of details which are very interesting to me but probably not as mesmerizing to others, I'll only be posting 1-2 times a week. Otherwise I might try to describe every cup of tea I drink, and as the Mad Hatter said, you can always have more. The problem is in having less (Carroll has his picture hanging in Christ Church's dining hall; yes, eyewitness account). But for interest, less IS more. So I will be posting probably every 3-4 days . . . -------------------- For a general note, tutorials start next week for me. Until then, it's still orientation. Then my fingers will bleed as I pound out papers every week prior to my tutorial ... read more

So I feel I have not kept up with all that's been happening. Today was the introduction to Oxford tutorials and libraries - scary stuff. But exciting. Since I last blogged, I got into my hostel, got to view art by a fellow hostel-stayer, toured Oxford, went to services, went to the Eagle & Child, found Chester House (home base for the program) got my key, got my roommates, cleaned my room (went for groceries and cleaning supplies), got bedding, drank tea, and got the history of a 1800s Methodist church. In other words, modern but with Dutch glass. Yesterday met quite a few other study abroad students, as well as Melissa on Sunday and several of her friends. Besides hanging out en masse, the roommates & I chatted with our UK student who's going for ... read more

9th May, 2009. It's time to go! Saturday morning, at 5:25 AM my time, I arrived at GEG airport for my flight to Salt Lake, UT. About 18 hours and several connections later, 7:00 AM London Time, I was wandering Heathrow. Wow. Looking for lifts to take me and my baggage down to the Express to station two and then up again so I could walk half a mile indoors to the Central bus station, I found myself asking both uniformed and non-uniformed English citizens the way. Then to the bus hub: airport tube departing for Oxford, 7:50 AM. Journey? In brief: I stayed up all night Friday to help me adjust to the upcoming time change. Ergo, the instant of take-off, I fell asleep and stayed that way until landing in Salt Lake. From Salt ... read more
