We had a whirlwind of sightseeing the last couple of days...27,500 steps yesterday and 20,000 today. T is keeping track with her Fitbit. If my feets ever get worn down to bloody stumps, she'll be able to prove why. Oddly, though, my feet don't even hurt...(for reals). My mom made me email my dad back home (who has of late been diligently tracking his steps) to tell him how many steps *we* did yesterday...she may or may not have wanted me to relay that he could "put that in your pipe and smoke it". We got a hop-on, hop-off pass, but still (obviously) did a lot of walking. The Danube splits the city into the Buda and Pest sides. The Pest side is super walkable and if I had it to do over I may pass ... read more

So very tired already....yaaaaaawwwnnnn. The 8+ hour flight was uneventful (which, lets face it, is how we hope all flights go). Departed and arrived on time. Sweet. But with an overnight flight and the time difference (Budapest is 6 hours ahead of Ottawa) I am working hard to stay awake to get on Eastern European time. Travelling in and out of my home country of Canada a lot, and very often to (or through) our US neighbours, I'm super used to a thorough "what is the purpose of your travel" and "how long will you be here" and "do you have anything to declare" when we get to Customs. Even when coming home we have declaration forms to fill out that are handed out on the plane before we land. Not so for Hungary - no ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Denver September 26th 2015

We had only one full day in Denver before flying home and with an abundance of options, how do you narrow them down? We immediately eliminated anything that would require a lot of driving since we were officially drived out. We also wanted something we hadn't done already along the way, so after some interweb searching we settled on the Denver Botanic Gardens. Smack in the middle of the city, this place was a shockingly beautiful surprise. It was huge - you could literally spend hours quietly wandering through. Without a doubt the most spectacular urban botanical garden I've seen. We also lucked in and showed up on a free admission day. Sweet! It also gave me an opportunity to put to work a photo lesson my uncle gave me before the trip. Sweet x 2! ... read more

'Member when I said we had time to spare, 'member that? Good thing because the night we arrived in Keystone (a town nestled securely in the Black Hills) I got (bleah, sputter, groan) a cold. The resilient T had been nursing a cold since Grand Teton (yup, that far back), but having such a strong constitution, it didn't slow her down. I finally caught it and it knocked me on my ass. I ended up spending the next day in bed intermittently sleeping and watching documentaries about the Wild West while T did some solo touring. Because she is the very best cousin ever, she brought me some soup and told me all about her day. She saw the Crazy Horse Memorial which she really liked and went to the Jewel Cave National Monument which she ... read more

Following the resplendent magnificence that was Yellowstone National Park, our next stop was Cody, Wyoming - famed home of Buffalo Bill Cody - about 1 hour outside the east entrance of YNP. It's a small place, but you have your choice of a number of things to see/do dependin' on which way your travel inclinations lean. We opted for the very compact and excellent Old Trail Town. OTT has collected a number of small buildings from the town's environs and lovingly restored them. The stories about those interred in the small cemetery were fascinating and their (teeny, tiny) museum was equally interesting. Lots of old photos which we poured over. The long, sweeping moustache sure was popular back then. In Cody along the main drag, just outside Buffalo Bill's historic Irma Hotel, there is an old ... read more

Besides being generally glorious,Yellowstone National Park is also HUGE. We were told some people do it in a day but I'm not sure how they managed that. We spent time over three days (but not full days on days 1 and 3), and it was still a taxing schedule. We did get to see everything on our list, but had to limit trails to those that were the shortest. You could easily spend an entire day just hiking, or fishing, or cycling, or whatever else floats your boat (there are probably boats somewhere in thepark, too, they gots everything). The main drag around the park is called the loop (technically a figure 8, but we skipped that wee connector in the middle and stuck to the sights along the main loop). The schedule: Day 1 - ... read more

We've enjoyed many an American National Park/monument in previous trips (the most we saw I n one stretch was an impressive 17 when we did our American Southwest road trip awhile back (Zion was my favourite) and this time we're hoping to tackle 8, starting with Dinosaur National Monument in Jensen, Utah. From Colorado Springs we had a gorgeous drive along the I-70W. Most of this leg was through Colorado and let me say this to you, CO - you are a shockingly gorgeous state. Pictures don't do it justice but it's going on my fav drives playlist. We arrived at DNM late in the afternoon and the fossil site isn't open late (only until 5pm) so we hurried on over. The area is known for having an enormous amount of dinosaur fossils, and a number ... read more

We had to get up ridiculously early for our flight to Denver so were half-dazed when we checked the forecast. I assumed a lack of caffeine at 5:00am was responsible for some delirium and I mis-read the temperature...but oh no, I had not. From the Denver airport we picked up our rental car and headed 1 hour south of Denver to Colorado Springs into a breezy 92 degrees. I kid you not. For my fellow Canadians, 92 farenheit is the temperature at which Canadian flesh begins to roast. Interesting fact: a broiled Canadian smells a lot like bacon. While in Colorado Springs (we spent two nights there) we checked out the Garden of the Gods park, Old Colorado City Historic District, the Town of Manitou Springs, and took the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago September 12th 2015

Before bestie T et moi take on the road trip proper, we decided to fly into Chicago for a spell. Our occasional third travel musketeer, Auntie A, joined us for the Chicago bit. (And is it still "musketeer" when we is all refined ladies? Should it not be Musketrixes? Musketrettes? Or are we just going gender neutral with this? I digress.) We arrived on September 10 and left obscenely early on the 13th. Here's what we did: 1) Architectural river tour (everyone's favourite, even though it rained the whole time) 2) Hop-on, hop-off (Big Bus) a few times - we got the 48hr pass with the intention of using it often to get around to the main sites, but in the end it was more efficient to walk so that's what we did. Still worth it ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Clearwater February 20th 2011

We ended our trip in Clearwater where we had started. Due to the ever increasing number of our (copious) extended family members that are spending the winter in this neck of the woods, I’ve found myself in the area a ton of times and have managed to do some great things around the gulf coast. These are some of my favourites from past visits: · Snorkelling with manatees at Crystal River - A million good reasons to go: you can pet a manatee, the water is warm and super clear (despite the odd manatee turd that may drift by) and everyone looks good in a wetsuit (strutting permitted). · Fort Desoto Beach – I’m not normally a beach person (on account of I don’t like the sun to touch my skin), but this one is breathtaking. ... read more
