Day 31 – September 23, 2016 - Vigo, Spain to Redondela, Spain – 12.73 Miles After checking out of our hotel, we went in search of the famous yellow arrow so we could get back on the trail for our fun day of walking. On our way to locating the arrow, we passed by many children in school uniforms headed to school and also one of the schools. As you can see by the picture, we were very happy to find the yellow arrow on a post as we entered a shopping area. The yellow arrows had us winding through the city and eventually had us climbing up a steep hill where we followed the contour of the hillside high above the ocean giving us some great views. The path would alternate between woodland areas, dirt ... read more

Day 30 – September 22, 2016 - Vigo, Spain - 0 Miles After eight days of walking, I definitely was ready for a rest day in Vigo. Spent the day working on my blog trying to get it current which I was successful in doing. Enjoyed a great lunch in the cafeteria at El Corte Ingles. We went back to the same tapas restaurant we were at the night before for dinner as their food is very good. Tomorrow the boots go back on and we hit the trail again. Hard to believe we only have five more walking days before we reach Santiago where we will receive our completion certificate. After two rest days in Santiago we have four more days of walking to Finisterre.... read more

Day 29 – September 21, 2016 - Baiona, Spain to Vigo, Spain - 16 Miles Enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at our hotel this morning. Prior to leaving the hotel, I decided to have my picture taken with the Knight of Armour who wasn’t too bad looking but a little cold - ha. When we stepped outside we were met by fog and cloudy skies which didn’t prevent me from taking some pictures of the fort and harbor. As a group we decided we would do the alternate route today which was to be along the coast but unfortunately I don’t think we were on the right route as we were walking alongside a highway most of the day. We spent most of the morning walking around the bay on our way out of Baiona. Prior to ... read more

Day 28 – September 20, 2016 - Oia, Spain to Baiona, Spain – 12 Miles After saying goodbye to our hosts – husband and wife who are both deaf and the husband’s mother we made our way back to the trail. We had not gone far when we passed by some corn stalks, a good looking scarecrow and a good size slug crossing the road. For the most part of the morning we walked on a path a little way up from the ocean or on the road making our way through various small villages. As we were walking up the hill just outside one of the villages we spotted some sheep in a corn field. After having walked 6 kilometers we stopped for a break at a little cafe. Couldn’t pass up taking a picture ... read more

Day 27 – September 19, 2016 - A Guarda, Spain to Oia, Spain – 8.9 Miles After leaving the hotel, we go in search of finding the yellow arrow. The arrow was found just a short walk up the street from our hotel. As we follow the arrows, they have us winding back and forth through the streets of A Guarda. At one point I thought we were being directed back to our hotel. As we were walking through the streets of A Guarda, we passed by this cute little dog that was having so much fun with a larger dog. Further down the road we come to a church where Karen gives us her blessings from an outdoor podium. While we are at the church Harlan has a conversation with three girls – one from ... read more

Day 26 – September 18, 2016 - Vila Praia de Ancora, Portugal to A Guarda, Spain – 9.04 Miles After leaving the hotel, we made our way back to the boardwalk to begin our walk which is to be a short day – yippee!!! We soon pass by an old for and then we see several people on the rocks picking up something. We asked a lady who was walking on the boardwalk if she knew what they were doing and she said she didn’t as she was not from this area. After leaving the boardwalk we now start walking on a dirt/gravel trail that takes us through a woodland area before bringing us back to an open area. We soon come to a tunnel under the railroad tracks that has us now on an asphalt ... read more

Day 25 – September 17, 2016 - Viana do Castelo, Portugal to Vila Praia de Ancora, Portugal – 16.24 Miles We left the hotel walking alongside the river passing by some beautiful flowers on one side and a boat on the other. As we continued on we walked by the walls of a fort, the Viana do Castelo church, a statue of half a horse/half a rider and then a rooster vane with pink hearts. We leave the river and start our way out of the city walking alongside the railroad tracks before making a turn onto a dirt road. While walking down the dirt road that leads us back to the ocean we see a couple of paragliders that end up flying almost right over us. As we are walking alongside the ocean I spot ... read more

Day 24 – September 16, 2016 - Esposendes, Portugal to Viana do Castelo, Portugal – 16.79 Miles After checking out of our hotel we walked to the boardwalk where we located the Camino yellow arrow that had us walking past another lighthouse. It was not long before we were directed inland walking through a residential area. As we are standing outside a Mercado, Karen strikes up a conversation with a gentleman from Holland who said he and his friend were going from one Mercado (grocery store) to another. Karen’s replied we were going from one café to another. The gentleman then said to Karen in Holland that would mean you are going from one marijuana place to another. So Karen asked him what word they us for a café and he said bar so she said ... read more

Day 23 – September 15, 2016 - Povoa de Varzim, Portugal to Esposendes, Portugal – 14.37 Miles Woke up to very cloudy skies. Left the hotel and made our way back to the boardwalk to start walking again alongside the ocean. Due to the storms the ocean was very rough today as compared to yesterday. As we walked this morning we saw people collecting sea weed and laying it out too dry. Also saw a gentleman with his cart just standing on the boardwalk looking out at the sea and I was not quite sure what he was thinking. It’s not long before the boardwalk leads us to a dirt/gravel road that has us walking past some very large gardens and greenhouses. We passed by a large field of onions and saw a large pile of ... read more

Day 22 – September 14, 2016 - Porto, Portugal to Povoa de Varzim – 19.65 Miles Right before leaving the hotel this morning we had a group picture taken. Then it was off to the Sao Bento metro station to catch a train to Mercado. Once aboard the very packed train we talked to two gals – one from Germany and another from Romania who are students at the university in Portugal for the semester studying graphic design. After departing the train at Mercado, we climbed the spiral staircase and walked across the lifting bridge leaving Porto behind us. As we are walking down the road on our way to the ocean we pass by a coffee shop where we stop to enjoy a cup of coffee. Having finished our coffee, we head in the direction ... read more
