Day 24 – September 16, 2016 - Esposendes, Portugal to Viana do Castelo, Portugal – 16.79 Miles
After checking out of our hotel we walked to the boardwalk where we located the Camino yellow arrow that had us walking past another lighthouse. It was not long before we were directed inland walking through a residential area.
As we are standing outside a Mercado, Karen strikes up a conversation with a gentleman from Holland who said he and his friend were going from one Mercado (grocery store) to another. Karen’s replied we were going from one café to another. The gentleman then said to Karen in Holland that would mean you are going from one marijuana place to another. So Karen asked him what word they us for a café and he said bar so she said to him that bar to us is where you get alcoholic drinks. What a difference the meaning of words is in different countries. After Harlan purchased some items at the Mercado we continued walking on cobblestone streets through the city that soon took us up a hill where we got some great views of the ocean.
As we are walking we have
a postman on his scooter pass us. I saw him turn onto a street a little further up from us so when we got to the street he was still there so I asked him if I could take his picture and he grinned and said yes. Definitely a different way of delivering mail as to how it is done in the US.
After walking for a while we know are ready to find a café for a cup of coffee. Prior to us reaching a café that we thought was going to be open we pass by two Portuguese ladies who appeared to be having a very friendly conversation. I ask them if I could take their picture and they were more than happy to oblige.
Of course when we reached the cafe it’s not open and the lady that was there was cleaning the place said we needed to drop down a couple of streets to find a café. So on we go in search of a cafe that is open. We find a second cafe and wouldn’t you know it – it’s closed. So back to walking in hopes of finding one that is open.
As the old saying goes – third time is a charm – and it worked for us as we finally found a café that was open.
Now that we have had our coffee, we are re-energized and ready to continue on. We soon pass by a pristine looking church and then pass by some kiwi plants. The path now leads us through a forest where we see a monument with the Camino shell and yellow arrow. We soon come to a roman bridge over a small stream. After crossing the bridge, we continue walking through the forest and soon come to a beautiful church.
Leaving the church behind us we climb uphill through the forest alternating between a dirt path and a cobblestone path. We soon pass by the Avenida do Mosteiro and then have an uphill climb that takes us past the entrance to the Sra do Crasto. We now head downhill into the town of Chafe where we have our lunch break at Cafe S Sebastiao. As we are leaving Chafe we spot a goat who is more than willing to let us take his picture.
It’s not long before we enter the town of
Vila Nova de Anha where we cross the very long, long, long green bridge that I thought was never going to end into Viana do Castelo where we walk through the city until we find out hotel for the night.
