Day 21 – September 13, 2016 - Porto, Portugal – 0.00 Miles Started the day out by taking the vehicular up so we didn’t have to walk up the steep hill to view the Se Cathedral. Our next stop was the Lello & Irmao book store so we could see not only the books but also the gorgeous curved staircase inside the store. We then made our way over to the Torre dos Clerigos (The Tower) and viewed the chapel plus walked up the 240 steps to the top of the tower where we got some great views of the city. The final thing we did while in Porto was to attend a port tasting at the Calem wine factory which was very interesting. When we got back to our hotel, Julian and Moria , friends ... read more

Day 20 – September 12, 2016 - Porto, Portugal - 0.00 Miles Enjoyed our first rest day in Porto by touring the city. We decided the best way to see the main attractions in Porto was to do the Hop On-Hop Off bus. A few of the sites we saw are: Train station – As you step inside the train station you will see more than 20,000 painted tiles, also known as 'azulejos.’ The tiles were installed between 1905 and 1916, and created by one of the most famous azulejo artists of the time, Jorge Colaco. Café Majestic - Most celebrated of Porto's cafes, and one of Europe's most historical. The café is also known for its cakes and pastries selection. Also place where author J.K. Rowling worked on the draft of her first book Harry ... read more

Day 19 – September 11, 2016 - Grijo, Portugal to Porto, Portugal - 11.7 Miles Sergio and his daughter arrived at Sao Joao da Madeira at 9 am to take us back to Grijo where we had stopped walking yesterday. After dropping us off at the Church of the Monastery of Saint Saviour of Grijo, we were fortunate to have this nice gentleman give us a tour of the church and stamp our pilgrim’s passport. As we leave the church, we walk pass a cemetery where we see people placing fresh flowers on various graves or lighting candles. We continue walking down the Avenida do Mosteiro and eventually make a right hand turn walking around the huge walls of the monastery in the general direction of Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s not long be before we ... read more

Day 18 – September 10, 2016 - Sao Joao da Madeira, Portugal to Grijo, Portugal - 12.50 Miles The morning is considerably warmer than yesterday - 61 degrees. We leave the hotel walking in the direction of the church. As we are walking we pass by a cute mural, a statue of a shoe repairman and one of men around a bowl with what appears to be hats in their hands and the Oliva factory (sewing machine). Right before we reached the church we stopped at an intersection trying to decide which way the trail goes when we are approached by an elderly Portuguese man trying to tells us in Portuguese to continue straight ahead past the church. We thank him and proceed on to the beautiful church that has fine façades of blue and white ... read more

Day 17 – September 9, 2016 - Albergaria-a-Velha, Portugal to Sao Joao da Madeira - 19.12 Miles When I checked the temperature on my phone it said it was only 54 degrees out. As we headed out the hotel door, I wished I had put on my fleece top, bottom half of my hiking pants and gloves – burr was it cold!!! The trail had us winding throughout the streets of Albergaria-a-Velha before leading us to a forest track. Upon leaving the forest we passed by the statue of Our Lady. We now begin walking on a very busy secondary road dodging fast moving cars. I was never so happy when the trail made a turn onto a woodland path taking us away from all those crazy drivers. It’s not long before the woodland path turns ... read more

Day 16 – September 8, 2016 - Agueda, Portugal to Albergaria-a-Velha, Portugal - 11.2 Miles Woke up to cloudy skies and a whole lot cooler temperature. The skies look like they could open up and rain any minute but by the time we are ready to leave the hotel the clouds are mostly gone and the sun has come out. We walk back to the roundabout that we passed by coming into town and find the arrows marking the trail. Proceeding past the roundabout we walk alongside the river which allows us to get a great picture of the bridge we crossed over when we arrived the night before. The trail takes us up a steep hill where we cross over the railroad tracks and then head directly back down hill again. As we are walking ... read more

Day 15 – September 7, 2016 - Mealhada, Portugal to Agueda, Portugal - 17.1 Miles Woke up to a misty, moisty, foggy morning that had me putting the rain cover on my backpack. What a big change from the hot weather we have been having. The day stayed cloud covered until about 12:30 pm when the sun finally decided it wanted to come out and join us. We had to backtrack a little this morning to rejoin the trail. Wouldn’t you know it, shortly after we start we miss an arrow due to us talking and not paying attention and head up the hill in the wrong direction. Thank goodness we had not gone very far before a nice older lady who was hanging out her bedding pointed us in the right direction and then bid ... read more

Day 14 – September 6, 2016 - Coimbra, Portugal to Mealhada, Portugal - 16.3 Miles After having a wonderful breakfast and saying goodbye to the awesome employees at Hotel Vila Gale, our day begins. We start by following the busy street under the bridge for the I-10 before turning right onto another busy secondary road. As we proceed up the road we pass under the railway bridge and continue to the petrol station where we turn onto an old asphalt road leaving Coimbra behind us. We now walk alongside an overgrown canal parallel to the rail line. As we continue walking we soon pass through the small village of Ademia and then onto Fornos. While we were looking at a sign in Fornos for Casa Morais which was formerly a medieval pilgrim inn, we are greeted ... read more

Day 13 – September 5, 2016 - Coimbra, Portugal – Rest Day – 0.00 Miles After a good night’s sleep and a wonderful breakfast, Harlan, Karen and I made our way through the very narrow streets of Coimbra and walked uphill to the University of Coimbra where we purchased a ticket to view The Tower, S Michael’s Chapel and The Old (Joanine) Library. We made our way up the 174+ curved steps to the top of The Tower where we were able snap some great views of the city. The original purpose of the tower was to serve as an astronomical observation site which is the reason for the “roofless” top, uncommon in other similar towers around the world. The University’s daily life has been regulated by the bells of the tower, the oldest being from ... read more
