Day 3 - August 26, 2016 – Vilafranca de Xira, Portugal to Azambuja, Portugal – 15.61 Miles The morning begins with all of us walking to the Vilafranca de Xira train station where we drop off Karen so she can catch the train to Azambuja. After crossing the train tracks we walk by a nice riverside park before coming to a paved road. It’s not long before we make a turn onto a dirt road that we follow until we reach the little town of Carregado Alenquer. Here we make a turn and walk along a dyke that goes past the thermoelectric power station. Once we leave the dyke the trail once again becomes a paved road where we soon are greeted by a group of bikers. Continuing on the trail we pass by farm fields ... read more

Day 2 - August 25, 2016 – Santa Iria de Azoia, Portugal to Vilafranca de Xira – 22.14 Miles After checking out of our hotel, we started walking towards the train station and passed by some beautiful morning glories. Upon reaching the train station we crossed over the tracks and followed the trail through an industrial area passing by several large beautiful gardens. The trail now turns into a walkway taking us through the Tejo estuary which is busy with local walkers and runners. As we leave the estuary we come to the Alverca do Ribatejo rail station and the air museum Museo do Ar where I take a couple of pictures of some of the planes. After crossing over the railway we find ourselves back on a dirt path that takes us past playing fields ... read more

Day 1 - August 24, 2016 - Lisbon, Portugal to Santa Iria de Azoia, Portugal – 3.5 + 14.72 = 18.22 miles I'm dedicating this Portugues El Camino walk to my dad and son, Chad. I know they will be watching over me every step I take as I walk the 450 miles from Lisbon, Portugal to Santiago, Spain and then onto Finisterre, Spain. It’s official – we are off walking the 450 mile Portugal El Camino. After getting the pickup for our bags straightened out, we bid farewell to Felicidade Borges (owner of the apartment we stayed in while in Lisbon). The walk officially starts at the Lisboa Cathedral Se but since we had already done about 3.5 miles of the walk on Monday evening we took the train back to the train station at ... read more

Lisbon – August 23, 2016 – Last Day Today Harlan and I decided to take the train to Sintra to do some sightseeing while Karen visited the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (museum of Portuguese tiles). While we were on the train I took a couple of pictures of what I thought was pretty neat graffiti. We arrived in Sintra around 9:45 am as did many other people ready for a fun day of sightseeing. Upon departing the train, we walked up the hill past the Municipal building along with the National Palace which is the oldest surviving royal palace in Portugal that is still used for official receptions. We did not tour the National Palace as we were more interested in getting to the Palace of Pena and Moorish Castle. After passing the National Palace we ... read more

Lisbon – August 22, 2016 Our day got off to a late start as we were tired from not getting much sleep due to the Fado music from the restaurant below going until the wee hours of the morning. Today our plans were to view the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. Calouste Gulbenkian was an Armenian oil tycoon who gave Portugal his art collection or “harem” as he called it. His gift was an act of gratitude for the hospitable asylum granted him by Portugal during World War II. The Portuguese considered Gulbenkian an inspirational model of how to be thoughtfully wealthy as he made a habit of “tithing for art”, spending 10 percent of his income on things of beauty. *** Arriving at the museum the first thing we did was tour the nice gardens. I saw ... read more

First of all I apologize for this blog being so lengthy but we did have a very busy day touring the area and I didn’t want to leave anything out. We left the apartment at approximately 10:30 am and finally returned around 8 pm after walking 11.5 miles and 25,309 steps and we haven’t even started walking the El Camino yet. The day began with Harlan and I (Karen stayed at the apartment as she still is not feeling well) walking to the cathedral (Se) to get our El Camino passport stamp since when we start the walk on Wednesday morning the church will be closed. For those of you who are not familiar with the El Camino we are required to get at least one stamp every day in our passport so when we arrive ... read more

Our flight landed in Lisbon around 6:45 this morning. Once we got through customs and got our luggage we were then met by the owner of the apartment who arranged for a taxi to deliver us to the apartment. A friend of the owner was supposed to have picked us up but she had car trouble and couldn’t After getting settled into the apartment we went out to have lunch which we didn’t have to go far as the restaurant was almost right below our apartment. After lunch we decided it was time to do some really serious shopping so we went to the oldest market in Lisbon which really turned out to be what I would call a flea market. Had fun and enjoyed some good laughs as we wondered through the market. Since we ... read more

The big day for my new journey has finally arrived and as the song goes "my bags are backed and I'm ready to go". In a couple of hours I will head to the airport where I will join my good friends Harlan and Karen Sager to catch our flight to Lisbon, Portugal. Upon arrival in Lisbon we will head to the apartment we have rented to leave our bags and then head out to enjoy 3 1/2 days of sightseeing before we start our 440 mile El Camino walk from Lisbon to Santiago, Spain on August 24th. This El Camino walk is definitely going to be a lot different than the one I did a couple of years ago -- to start with I will have friends walking with me for the whole 440 miles ... read more
