You'all will have to excuse me, cause this is yesterdays blog. Thursday: This day didn't start right. I screwed up on when the train left so we had to wait another 45 min. We had intended to go down to Brig, switch from the narrow gauge line to the std. gauge Intercity train. Head through the long tunnel that separates the Wallis from the Bernese Oberland. get off at Spiez and on to Interlaken then Grindelwald to hike in that region. By the time we reached Interlaken I decided that my "tweaked hamstring" (that I did standing up in the train taking pictures out the open window) was not up to the occasion! Sooo, Option 2. We take the boat trip on Lake Brienz. instead Boat trip down the lake - train back to Interlaken East ... read more

Yesterday we did a long train/boat trip to the NE part of Switzerland. Left at 7AM and got back at 8 PM A long trip with lots of train connections and two boats. Today just one train trip to Andermatt,(sort of the crossroads of Switzerland). about 1 1/2 hours from where we are staying. The train moves slow and you can pull the windows down making it quite easy to take pictures without the window glare. You still have to be "quick on the draw" cause things come by very quickly. Here are some images from the last two days. I think I took about 375, but I picked out a few I thought you might like. Remember, they get larger if you click on them Lowell ... read more

It's hard to believe it is the latter part of August. The time if flying by. We still have 2 train rides left on our Eurail Pass that we have to use before Sept 8. Think we may go somewhere today as our Swiss Pass will be valid tomorrow and we can go anywhere anytime in Switzerland on that for 22 days. I have a few pictures that I took yesterday. I hope they upload. Still click on them to make them bigger. Lowell... read more

Hello everybody, After a LONG train trip from Belgium we have arrived in The Canton Wallis in SW Switzerland. Our host picked us up in Brig and we are now in a beautiful Swiss chalet in the wonderful mountains. Glorias Swiss blood has been cruising through her body ever since we arrived. We have settled in, got some groceries and some Swiss Francs. We are READY! Very hot today I think 90. But we are enjoying the sun as in Belgium, (not so much) Here are a couple of pictures I took today. God bless Lowell ... read more

This is going to IT for Belgium. Yesterday we took the train to Antwerp. Very nice historic center. We had our cup of Starbucks coffee at the beautiful RR station and walked about a mile to the Grote Markt. (The Large Market Square) We did take a tour of the "Cathedral of our Lady" which is the largest Gothic church in Belgium, Holland or Luxemburg. 170 years to build and was completed in 1521. There are 4 world class paintings by Reubens inside.Very interesting! Tomorrow we are off to Switzerland early. Click on the image. (Sorry if the images are screwed up. It's the bad software upload.) maybe better in Switz. Lowell... read more

Hello all, Long day today. We took the train to Antwerp and were slowed down by one hour, I guess something happened on the line in Holland. That gave us an extra hour in Antwerp RR station to have a Starbucks and enjoy an exquisite architecture -The Antwerp Railroad Station, built between 1865-1905. The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium, and is considered the 4th greatest RR station in the world. The trip to Delft was OK. Delft is a small city known for its blue and white pottery. Lots of small canals, just a wonderful city to be in and to enjoy. Took about a 150 pictures and were back in Lichtrevelde Belgium by 8:30 pm Have a look. Click on the image to enlarge and get ... read more

Saturday, Another rainy morning. This afternoon the rain abated and we decided to go to a small city about a 45 min drive from us. Kortrijk is quite old I think 12 century. But has been destroyed in many wars. The latest in 1944 when it was a main railroad terminus for the German army. I believe the RAF dropped over 5000 bombs on it in one night. Not too much left. Except the city hall and a few churches. The one area I thought was interesting is the Beguinage. It is a cluster housing paid for by benefactors and facilitated by the Catholic Church to house widowed women (caused basically by the death of their husbands during the wars) They did not want to take religious vows as nuns in a convent, These were started ... read more

Hello all 62 of you, Yesterday we visited the coast of Belgium on the North Sea. A good day for it with some sun and a breeze off the water. Lots of hotels, lots of people. Enjoying the beech. A large strand of sandy coast. The waves were puny. Also I'm sure the water temps were quite chilly as most were just enjoying the sun. I've come to understand that for most Europeans their holiday (which we call vacation) is shopping and eating. Quite family oriented whether on bicycle or at the table. The bikers have NO fear of cars. They just peddle on their merry way regardless of cars. There are some bike ways but that would never do, for the Tour de France want-a-be's who ride in packs in all their regalia! Ah Europe! ... read more
