Got a cab over to a nearby shopping centre in Manukau City yesterday, to buy a Garmin GPS. Steve spotted in the shop that the widescreen model was mis-priced, the same price as the regular sized model, so he wangled a bargain, and it means he can see the screen better. So, I'm redundant now as chief map-reader (phew!). Went into Auckland City Centre again today and caught Fuller's ferry (Richie moonlighting again) over to the maritime village of Devonport. It's one of the city's oldest suburbs, founded in 1840, with picture postcard Victorian villas and nice beaches. Had a stroll along Cheltenham Beach from where you can see Rangitoto Island, a 600 year old volcano. Apparently, the earth's crust between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours is so thin that every few thousand years, magma finds ... read more

Watching the NZL v FRA game on the telly in our hotel room; it's Saturday night in Cardiff where the game is and Sunday morning here. Went into Auckland City Centre yesterday. Looked around Aotea Square Market. Had a wander up and down the main street, Queen Street, and priced up a few GPS units for the van. It seems like yesterday when we were last here in Auckland back in March 2006 - we had 3 weeks in NZ, so it was a mad rush to see places. The pace is a lot more chilled this time.... Looking forward to getting the camper van and having transport and being able to unpack our stuff. ... read more

On Wednesday late morning we left the Comfort Inn Hotel and drove to the car rental depot at LAX to drop off Dodge the Bodged Porsche; no problems with the car at drop-off....Did we need all those waivers??! Got on the complimentary shuttle bus to the terminal and waited around for the Qantas check-in desk to open. Stood for about 2 hours in the check-in queue to get our boarding passes. The guy in front of us thought he could check-in his wife and kids without them being present ... sigh ... so he had to go and get them from the food hall... roll eyes, tap fingers, sigh... Finally got our boarding passes. Watched the baggage handler hurl our bags from the X-ray machine onto the conveyer belt; that must be on the person specification ... read more

We made it through the jungle that is LA! Set off from Santa Barbara just before noon, and headed to Hollywood to our pre-booked Comfort Inn hotel on W Sunset Blvd; booked it based on reviews on TripAdvisor and the price was good as Steve could get a Senior rate! Drove past the 'HOLLYWOOD' sign, along the 101 Hollywood Fwy, with cars whizzing along in about 7 lanes. Drove past 7 or 8 exits on the Fwy and came off at Alvarado and managed to find the hotel a few turnings and blocks along. Nice enough hotel, bank-grade bullet-proof glass protecting the receptionist like, but nice decor... 'Is the area safe?', we asked the chap in reception. 'Er, the area is full of young people and artists, you know, but we're very close to Hollywood tourist ... read more

We left our comfortable motel room in Cambria late morning, after breakfast and a stroll along the boardwalk to see the seals. We headed on down south to Santa Barbara, covering about 120 miles, mainly along Freeway 101, stopping about half way for snacks - beef jerky, Oreao Cookies, pretzels, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey Kisses, and copious amounts of root beer; very healthy! It definitely feels hotter here in Santa Barbara. After arriving at the hotel, the Best Western Beachside Inn on Cabrillo Blvd, we had a walk along the boulevard and it felt like the middle of summer. We made our way downtown along the main street, State Street, to find a camera shop so I could enquire about cleaning the sensor (Steve takes me round gun shops, I drag him round camera shops!); ... read more

We decided to move on further down the coast today to cover some of the 300+ miles to LA. We said goodbye to the smelly room and headed off down Hwy 1 through the stretch of coastline known as Big Sur. It's a breathtaking coastline, the scenery is amazing. We saw vultures, elephant seals, and a whale far out at sea. We drove down to Cambria, a small town about 240 miles north of LA and booked into a cute motel, the Sea Otter Inn, along Moonstone Beach Drive; it's right overlooking the sea, and no dodgy carpet smell! After checking in, we had a walk over to the main street of Cambria and had a burger in the Main Street Grill. Steve's got a thing for root beer at the moment. We're heading on down ... read more

We decided to stay book another night in the smelly room rather than moving on. Besides, we're really close to the peninsular and the 17-Mile Drive. I saw a rather disconcerting notice near our room this morning, stating there are cancer-causing chemicals present at the facility! So, it's not really a 20-year old carpet smell at all, it's noxious gases permeating the building and killing us all. I asked the receptionist and she said the State requires businesses to provide warnings prior to exposing visitors to chemicals known to cause cancer; it's probably because of the hot tub chemicals they use. Still, not the best advertisement for a comfortable stay. Steve wanted to go back to the gun shop we popped into yesterday, so we wandered up the road in the morning. It's incredible to think ... read more

It's about 21:30 hrs here and Steve is doing serious zzzed's after driving from SF airport. We're in a VERY smelly motel room in Monterey, just along the coast down from SF (when I say just, I mean about 100 miles away... but that's peanuts-driving in America (don't tell Steve I said that). I've opened all the windows but nothing's going to get rid of this 20-year-old-carpet smell... This morning we were up again early doors and we were pleasantly surprised to see several cafe's open along Chestnut Street, so we grabbed a bite to eat to start the day. Across the road from the cafe, in 'Crunch Fitness', mad people were pounding away on running machines way before any signs of daybreak... The Californian quest for everlasting health and vitality? Sod that... We'd reserved a ... read more

I was up at 03:00 hrs as my stomach was complaining that it was way past lunchtime. We both ventured out at sparrow's fart in search of breakfast. At the recommendation of a local, we found Chestnut Street and filled up at a tidy cafe called 'Squat & Gobble'. We'd made it up Lombard Street to the 'Crookedest Street' part by about 09:00 hrs. A ride on a cable car was a must, with Steve the Legend hanging off the side flashing his fire-service ID shouting, 'Hutch Five-0'.... hmm. The conductor charged us $5 each but we didn't get tickets, so we reckon he's making a mint pocketing every 10th or so fare. Still, it's dodgy work cranking those cable car levers and stopping in time at the junctions so we'll let him off. We had ... read more

We've just arrived in San Francisco! The flight (about 11 hours) was pretty good but there's a limit as to how long I can sit sandwiched in the middle seat, and the interactive entertainment kept packing in so I had to pace the plane, while Steve slept, of course. It's about 19:45 hrs here although our body clock is telling us 'SLEEP!' as it's the middle of the night back in the UK. Steve's used to staying awake for several nights in a row though; he's gone off to the shop to get Hershey bars, and milk for the coffee - priorities! We're staying at the Travelodge on the Presidio, at the 'quieter' end of Lombard Street, the famous 'crooked street'. It's quite alright here, free wireless broadband, huge bed, TV, etc. Not sure whether to ... read more
