I was up at 03:00 hrs as my stomach was complaining that it was way past lunchtime. We both ventured out at sparrow's fart in search of breakfast. At the recommendation of a local, we found Chestnut Street and filled up at a tidy cafe called 'Squat & Gobble'. We'd made it up Lombard Street to the 'Crookedest Street' part by about 09:00 hrs. A ride on a cable car was a must, with Steve the Legend hanging off the side flashing his fire-service ID shouting, 'Hutch Five-0'.... hmm. The conductor charged us $5 each but we didn't get tickets, so we reckon he's making a mint pocketing every 10th or so fare. Still, it's dodgy work cranking those cable car levers and stopping in time at the junctions so we'll let him off. We had a mooch around Union Square, unavoidably got into a conversation with an unofficial guide, taught him Welsh for 'superstore' (archfachnad), and asked him for some money in exchange for the lesson (actually, Steve ended up giving him his loose change which came to about 25c). Steve was delighted to get a Gap hoodie for half price, as the labels say the same figures as in the UK but the £ is replaced with a $. Bargain! We got the cable car back up the hill to Fisherman's Wharf, saw Alcatraz across the water, took photos of big ships (for Billy), and walked miles up the Marina Boulevard (looks shorter on the map) to see the Golden Gate Bridge, but it was too foggy to get any tidy shots, so we hobbled back to the hotel. It doesn't look like we're getting a Porsche hire car as they need more time to arrange the hire; getting a tuk-tuk instead cos that's all they've got left. Onto pastures new tomorrow....

This one's also for Billy's collection; the O'Brien is the only Liberty Ship remaining from the convoy of ships that stormed Normandy beachheads in 1944. 'Wey-hey!'
