Wednesday was spent in a bit of a slow approach. I met up with my friend Yuki for a couple hours for a little shopping, talking, and some lunch. It was so great to catch up with her and hear about her plans for the future. I wish her the best of luck at the Hilton in Nagoya! After chatting with Yuki I headed into Kyoto for the afternoon and head out to a couple of the big temples/shrines that I had missed the first time that I was in Japan. My first stop was Fushimi-inari and it was full of people preforming hatsumo-de. I felt like a small sardine while I was walking around the main alters and prayer observation areas and was more than happy to play around in the lines of torii gates. ... read more

Chiaki and I got up Monday and met our friend Megumi at Kuzuha mall and had lunch at Chiaki's sushi restaurant. Chiaki works at a kaiten sushi place; which means that all the sushi goes around on a conveyor belt and you grab a plate as it goes past you. There are different prices for different plates. It was delicious and a very good start to the long day was was ahead of me. I say that in a good way. Megumi and I headed out to Osaka for the day. We mostly stuck around Namba. She took me around to all the busy places where we saw long lines for he takoyaki and we also saw the kuidore clown. He is situated out along one of the main roads and is a bit of a ... read more

I have decided that this post would take way to long and would include ridiculous amounts of extra pages to show all of the almost 400 pictures that I took. So I will cut it up based on the cities that I went to. I left for Osaka Station at the unlovely hour of 7:08am. THe train down was a little crowded but it was to be expected for the New Years Vacation. New Years is when everybody goes home to visit family so the trains are packed and they make an insane amount of money. I didn't have a reserved seat from Tokyo to Osaka though, so I stood in line with everybody else to try an get a coveted seat in them. My line stopped moving after a while so I just jumped ship ... read more

Asia » Japan » Miyagi » Sendai December 26th 2007

I am sorry for the late update but it has been a little crazy around Sendai the last week. Well, Christmas has come and gone for me but I must say that it has been an amazing one. This was my first Christmas away from home and I must say, since I'm not in the US it sorta flew by without much thought on my part. When your in the US you hear Christmas music from the end of November until Christmas. In Japan there is, obviously, no Christmas music to be heard. I never really thought that I was so conditioned to think, "hey it's Christmas" when I heard Christmas music until I came here. My co and her predecessor decided to have a Christmas Eve bash at my co's apartment. At around 3:30 I ... read more

This week was the start of the Sendai Pageant of Starlight; which is a beautiful light display in the trees along Jozenji-dori. Lucky for me it is a quick walk to get to all the action. I was going out for dinner the other night when I found all the trees shinning with bright lights. It is absolutely gorgeous and a must see for anybody in the area. It's a small affair but there area some venders set up with food. My co and I walked down it and then headed for some Italian food. Sendai has a bunch of Italian places. It was ridiculously cold here last night. Though the walk was cold it was a lot of fun to see all the lights. A very nice way o end the day. I have been ... read more

Asia » Japan » Miyagi » Sendai December 10th 2007

No traveling this weekend. My co and I both decided that we needed to just vegg out and get a lot of sleep. Funny thing is that, in an effort to save some money I had to drop over $1000 on a new laptop this weekend. I have had my thinkpad for 4 and a half years and I love it. It got me through college and didn't have any major problems....until this week. Recently my thinkpad has started freezing up for no reason. Then, when I try to turn it back on, it wouldn't do anything. Then when it does come on, it will freeze up after 5 minutes. So my dad and I had some great Skype marathons and we have decided that the computer isn't savable and that I should just get a ... read more

Asia » Japan » Akita » Tazawako December 4th 2007

My weekend started bright and early on Sunday; which really means before the sun was up. My co had gotten the earliest tickets to Tazawako, so we were out of Sendai by 6:37am. Lake Tawazako is the deepest lake in Japan. Legend goes that Princess Tatsuko and a dragon god fell in love and their passionate love making is what keeps the lake from freezing over in the coldest of temperatures. The tourist information center had nothing but good things to say about this and were very helpful in getting the bus schedule and everything to us. My co and I ended up at the Tazawako station at 8:30am and without further ado we set out to a little exploration hiking. Yes, we did this with our packs on. It being a Sunday and everything, there ... read more

Asia » Japan » Yamagata » Tendo November 26th 2007

So today was a fun eccentric day trip for the weekend. I got most of my house work done on Sunday so I searched through my LP to find a good day trip for today. As I was reading through Yamagata I found Tendo. According to the LP, Tendo makes 90% of all Japanese chess pieces, or Shoji. Since I had such fun at Ishinomaki I thought this Tendo and its shoji were just the place for a good day trip. Tendo is famous for having a 'ningen shoji', or human chess game in April I believe. I already looked to see if I could participate but no women allowed. My co and I are so going to be there though. I set out early this morning and made the 8:47am rapid train toward Yamagata and ... read more

Asia » Japan » Miyagi » Matsushima November 24th 2007

The famous haiku poet, Basho once penned this famous haiku in his breathless wonder of Matsushima: Matsushima ah! A-ah, Matsushima, ah! Matsushima, ah! Matsuhima is considered one of the 3 views of Japan and it very famous for its over 200 pine tree covered islands that dot the Matushima Bay. My two visitors and I decided to make a day of it and get out of Sendai for Labor-Thanks Day. Matsushima is 400 yen and 20 minutes outside of Sendai via the Tohoku Main, or a little longer on the Senseki Line. Matsushima Station is a little walk from the attractions but its really a lot quicker and you can take a walk around the town before be hit with massive tour buses and tour guides waving flags. My friends and I started out our extended ... read more

Asia » Japan » Iwate » Hiraizumi November 20th 2007

I have always understood the logistics of there being snow somewhere in November but I never thought I would actually be in a place to see it. North Carolina is a pretty hot place and snow is few and far between. It snowed this weekend. Sendai didn't get all that much but I was still around when I got up on Monday morning for my little excursion to Hiraizumi. Hiraizumi is in Iwate Prefecture; which is directly north of Miyagi. There was at least 3 inches of snow on the ground when I got there and there was flurries on and off all day. To top it off it was below freezing the entire day and I was walking around with wet jeans from the snow. I almost didn't get out of bed for this trip. ... read more
