I am currently living in Beppu, Japan for a 2 year graduate study and exploring another part of Japan again. And what a difference it is! I have also lived in Sendai, Japan for 3 years with the Eikaiwa Amity and have finally moved back home to the US. I'm not done traveling and I will keep updating where I've been and hopefully will add more blogs to come with my travels.

Feel free to leave comments or message me if you have questions! I love feedback!

Asia » Japan » Tokyo January 3rd 2012

My first day of vacation was spent on a bus. And when I say bus I mean a 14 hour bus ride from Fukuoka to Tokyo that left Fukuoka at 6:30pm and got into Tokyo at 8:30am the next morning. Highway buses really are one of the cheapest ways to travel in Japan, but not really the most convenient or comfortable unless your the type of person who can sleep anywhere, and if you are I am highly jealous of your magical abilities. Highway buses, specifically night buses, are really safe here. Nobody is allowed on the bus without first checking in with not only the driver, but an attendent that stays for the entire ride. My bus stopped every 2 to 3 hours at rest stops to let people get something to eat quickly or ... read more

So after a very long hiatus and rather hectic 2 months, the quater is over and I can finally relax and enjoy a 2 small break from school. As other graduate students and Masters holders would tell you, grad school is the part of the education process where you never really stop working. Reading has to get done, presentations have to be made and presented, final term papers of 5000 words have to be written and so on. I have paid my dues and spent way too many nights not falling asleep before 2am to tell you that it is a long and very tiring process. I have really enjoyed my classes this quarter, but I am really looking forward to my much lighter quarter that gives me Mondays off! Maybe I will be able to ... read more

Well, after a year of sitting around at home I decided that it was time to move on with my life and go back to school. That's right, grad school was the next step for me. A little background information might help some of you on this. I did my undergraduate studies in Asian Studies with a concentration in Japanese Studies. After being in Osaka for a study abroad, I graduated and moved myself to Sendai, Miyagi for 3 years. I didn't just live in Japan, I became apart of Japan. I traveled extensively, made Japanese friends, and studied Japanese. While I'm a little embarrassed about the fact that I'm not as fluent as I feel I should be, I'm getting there. So when it was time to get back to school I decided that I ... read more

On the official 10 year anniversary of 9/11 and the 6 month anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, I flew into Sendai airport, the airport that shown around the world being almost submerged by the Pacific Ocean. I flew into an area that is still recovering, still surrounded by empty and broken businesses. The first very prominent showing was the fact that the Airport Line still isn't running, a full 6 months after the disaster. After having to take a rather expensive taxi ride into the city, I could still see the destruction even in the dark. Ghost businesses span the distance from the airport to the highway and just over the edge lies the ocean that made them. As I was making my way into downtown every changes came up. E-Beans is still unusable, ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Cork September 5th 2011

Driving in Ireland is different kind of rush. Thoughts start spinning around your brain like, "How hard can a right turn be?" to "How the hell do I get around this round-about thing?" to "A couple inches and I would have taken off that guys mirror!". Sadly, I only survived a grand total of 20 minutes driving into Cork the next day and had to relinquish the job to my sister, who actually had experience driving in Europe. So we shifted the seats around in our little CRV and I became the unofficial navigator. Turns out I'm actually pretty good at it. Bring a good map and always be 1 step ahead of your driver when you navigate in Ireland or anywhere that you're not used to driving. When you drive into a city like Cork ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Waterford » Waterford August 27th 2011

After another day full of train travel, this time adding another train connection at the train station across town from Dublin station. Riding right along the water gives you a striking first impression. Waterford is one beautiful city. Beautiful historic warehouses, that have since been turned into shops, line the water and are only blocks away from the pedestrian shopping center. One of those beautiful buildings was our hotel. Granville Hotel used to be the mansion of a wealthy Irish merchant family whose son later designed the modern Irish flag. We arrived, late in the evening, only to find out that where had been a mistake in our reservation. They thought that there was only 2 of us when we actually numbered 3. To correct their mistake we were given one of the penthouse suite that ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » Portrush August 19th 2011

I was the one that put the Giants Causeway on our itinerary. I had seen numerous pictures of it and just had to get there. I didn't care that it was way out of our way and it was going to mean exchanging more money. I just had to go and see it. And I am so glad that I did. Riding the train from Dublin to Northern Ireland is one beautiful train ride. 2 hours to Belfast, a couple train changes and then another hour or so to the end of the line, Portrush. The closer you get to Portrush, the more the train runs right next to the sea. Between the sea, Giants Causeway, and Bushmillls Portrush is a really great place to stay. There are restaurants, pubs, bars, and enough people that you ... read more

While I was in Japan, I received a rather odd e-mail from my Mother. It said, rate these 4 places in order of where you want to go: Vancouver, St. Edward Island/ Nova Scotia, Tuscany, and Ireland. It took me .3 seconds to put Ireland at the top of the lis. I've had enough friends tell me how amazing Ireland was to know that if I was going to get some respect points from them, I had to go. I had to see the shades of green, I had to meet the people, and I had to drink a lot of Guinness. That's how, a month after moving back home from Japan, I ended up on a plane to Europe. Specifically, Ireland. "I am going to drink so much Guinness" might have crossed my mind a ... read more

Asia » Japan » Miyagi » Sendai July 29th 2011

(Blogger note: This is a memory blog. I left Japan about a year ago) It was the beginning of the end. After Beijing, all I had much time for was getting everything settled and start on the moving process. Including mailing boxes home, cleaning my apartment, hosting 3 friends and what was suppose to be a trip to Korea. During a typhoon! I had gone down to Narita to meet them and as we were waiting in line to check-in, we discovered that our flight had been cancelled. After more problems and uncertainty, I looked at my friends and said, "Why don't we just go to Sendai and hang out there for the week?" That became our plan of action and we headed into Tokyo for a quick shopping trip before getting the shinkansen, or bullet ... read more

Intimidation. The first feeling I felt coming into the Beijing International Airport. Lot's of, "God, I hope I can get around" and "I know 1 word of Chinese, let's hope that it's good enough" were going through my head on a fairly regular basis. Figuring out the train system really wasn't that difficult, it was the street crossings that I had the most trouble with. To go, or not to Go. When I did go, let's just say that here wasn't much room for me and the cars on the crosswalk. I stayed in a hostel that was situated in a traditional hutong. My directions to get to the hostel from the subway stop were as follows: "When your leaving the subway turn left until you reach a small electronics shop. Turn left and go down ... read more
