Should have stayed in bed. Get up determined to fix the internet problem today. Call apartment managers to come and fix the modem again.........they will call the provider. OK, so where is an internet cafe? Ru Du Quatre September........no worries except that I walk around for 45 minutes before finding the cafe.......4 Euros for an hour. OK ..... I forget about the French keyboard being different and stuff up my Bigpond password 3 times........locked out for 3 hours! Called Bigpond on international number ......."We are experiencing higher than usual call volumes.........not waiting 1/2 an hour on international roaming thanks. Stuff around for half an hour then find that I can actually log in again. Start an email, then my time runs out..........lose it all !@#$$%#@#$%! Breathe deep.........pay another 4 Euros and send some emails. Think I ... read more

Off to the Louvre today - or am I. Closed on Tuesdays. Plan B.......take a double decker bus tour around the sights of Paris. Despite the fact that it is 6 degrees C today I am determined to stay up top so that I can take photos. I perservere for about the 1st hour until I realise that I am too cold to think straight and stop for a hot coffee. See the most important places like the Ritz hotel where Lady Di was staying when she died and the tunnel where she crashed. Also, where the beautiful people shop, down the Champs Elysee etc. (wont bother to stop there). I am no longer totally ignorant about French history and can recite trivia about Marie Antoinette, the Louis and Napolean.... read more

My chance to go back to the fabric district of Montmartre unaccompanied. OMG OMG OMG……Kimmy, if you came here shopping you would need a shipping container to get home. So many beautiful fabrics, tapestries, silks, furnishing fabrics to die for. I make do with a few metres of fabric for cushion covers, a tapestry panel and a silk cheon sam? , but only because I wont be able to carry it home. This morning I got the guy from ‘Paris Apartments’ to come and fix our modem so I could move the blog along but when I returned this afternoon, the internet was down again. So I’m writing this on word, ready to cut and paste when I can get back onto my blog site ... read more

As we will be in London next weekend, we decide that we should go to Versailles today. Unfortunately it’s the coldest day yet and even raining a little. We join a guided tour with a group of American Business students (spotty, airheads) but the guide is good and gives us some interesting insights into the lives of the Louis’. The grandeur is indescribable and makes us understand the grudge that the common people had against Marie Antoinette and her ilk. Unfortunately the weather prevents us from enjoying the gardens. Its bitterly cold and windy, so we make do with the view from the palace and a book with lots of pictures. ... read more

Up at 5am to catch the Eurostar. Slice a chunk off my finger packing Bob’s razor but don’t have time to dwell on it as we have to walk to the Metro station to get to Gare du Nord in time to check in. We make it in time to see the railway officials cordoning off the entrances to the check in facilities??????????? Lots of people milling around asking questions and looking panicked and confused. Finally find someone who speaks good enough English to explain that there has been a fire near the railway lines in London involving gas cylinders and all lines have been closed until at least tonight. Options are to train to Calais and take the Ferry, fly (at our own expense) or re-book. With all of the panicking people who have ... read more

Bob and I trek out for Starbucks Coffee (dont much like the local stuff) and pastries for breakfast. Then we are off on the Metro to the Eiffel Tower. Guess what, it's very large. We decide that being the very fit and energetic group that we are we will walk up the first two levels before taking the lift to the top. Made it OK, legs just a little shaky. Views are a_mazing. Paris just goes on and on and on. So many beautiful old buildings. Disappointing that you can actually lean out at the top and get the full effect of being so high (despite Justins discovery that you can squeeze your head out between the wire mesh that stops you from jumping off). Lunch back on the second level, then we descend on wobbly ... read more

Justin and kathy have to return to Limerick today so I walk them down to the train station, stopping for sugar and lemon crepes for breakfast. I'm addicted.......I never understood what the attraction was with crepes until now. I'm going to buy one of those little stick things that you swirl the crepe mixture around with (if you think that's OTT..........one of the other wives is taking home a bloody great round electric crepe hotplate!. Ive done some research on the internet because although we are surrounded by very chic, tres expensive boutiques, I wonder where all the normal French people shop, where they buy their ubiquitous big black coats and leather boots. Lo and behold, we have been walking over and past, Paris's largest underground shopping centre (Bob has been doing so for 4 weeks ... read more
