Sorry for the long silence! It's due to a cross between the excitement of my birthday weekend and the lack of computer access... Last I left off, if I remember correctly, we were having a ball with our South African brothers (who we are now proper facebook friends with and will be visiting in the future!). Well, we parted ways in Wellington, and Tay and I didn't quite know what to do with ourselves. So we decided to check out the Te Papa museum, which everyone we talked to had been raving about. This FREE museum was packed with art, history, culture, science, and basically everything New Zealand. I was thrilled to learn that they had the world's ONLY displayed colossal squid! We had fun wandering through the exhibits and experiencing things such as an earthquake ... read more

The answer? Meet a group of 7 South African rugby fans on the ferry from Wellington to Picton who have a van, and accept their offer to give you a lift to Christchurch. When Steven, JJ, Johno, Deon, Neill, Stuart, and Dedrick came into our lives, early Monday morning before boarding the ferry, we thought they were a bunch of rowdy, hungover, rugby boys (well, they kind of are). But what we didn't know is that they would become our family for the next week of our lives. They ended up sitting next to us on board, as we had picked the best seats in the "movie theater" section of the boat. We made small talk about our travels in NZ, and it wasn't long before we realized we were both heading to Christchurch that day ... read more

I have neglected the blog this past week- I apologize. So here's the summary: Monday- we FINALLY left Auckland and took a bus east and then a bus north to arrive in the small town of Whitianga (Maori lesson: Wh="F" sound). From there we made our way to the even smaller town of Matarangi, where we stayed with a natural medicine student named Scott, who fed us a very generous, healthy dinner upon arrival. Tuesday- we headed back into town to catch a ferry across the inlet and walked along the white cliffs for a few hours. We also made a stop at the Hot Water Beach, but to our dissappointment it was high tide. To make up for this, we visited the Lost Spring thermal spa- a bit of a splurge but so deserved after ... read more

So we are still in Auckland, at the same house, even though we intended to leave Monday. Auckland has stolen our hearts! Really though, we just love the people we are couch surfing with. They let us use their internet, do laundry, and drive us to all the cool sights (did you know Auckland has 53 inactive volcanoes?!). Now our plan is to stay until Sunday, as one of our housemates' (nickname Baby Cat) birthday is this weekend and we want to celebrate with her! In the meantime we have been exploring the city and making our plans for the rest of our trip. I have started reading a book titled "Vagabonding: an uncommon guide to the art of long-term world travel" and 10 pages in am already hooked. The quote that spoke to me today: ... read more

Kia Ora! After 48 hours of traveling madness, my sister, Taylor, and I made it to our first couchsurfing stop in Auckland. Of our 5 flights over here, 4 were delayed, but somehow we ended up landing only 15 minutes later than expected. The biggest bump in the road, however was in LA, where we were told we couldn't go to New Zealand without return tickets or an itinerary proving we were eventually leaving the country. Like something out of the Amazing Race, we found a computer and booked tickets from Auckland to Sydney for a total of $308 in under 15 minutes. Charlie Sheen calls that winning. We also got to spend 5 hours on the beach in Fiji, collecting shells and enjoying a beautiful sunrise. Movies and people-watching kept us highly entertained on the ... read more

Here's my first blog! I'm doing this now because we are T-minus 2 weeks from lift off and I want to make sure this thing works. So this is a test run. I pretty much have no idea how this thing works (can you leave me comments?), but I figure I will just sit here and blabber for a few lines in hopes to get some thoughts out of my head since I am freaking out a little bit. Ok, a lot. I keep having realizations that I am leaving the country with a one-way ticket and no return date. It's slightly horrifying, but way more exhilarating! I hope you find this blog interesting, although I doubt it will ever fully capture the experiences I am going to have. But I will do my best to ... read more
