Are you finally ready to know where I'm going?! A lot of you have told me I'm not keeping you well enough informed, so I figured it was time to let you know the next planned destination. Drumroll please.... I'M HEADING TO NEPAL!!! I will be flying out of Malaysia on May 6th and landing in Kathmandu just in time for lunch at a much higher elevation. Sadly this is as far as the planning goes at the moment. I don't know what adventures Nepal will bring me, but I'm looking forward to new food, new language(s), and lots of free time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Don't worry, May is springtime in the Himalayas and it will be in the high 20's C (80's F) during the day. I still think anything below 75F will ... read more

One reason I usually avoid posting my future plans in my blog is because they change frequently. Now, this statement is more likely to be true when I am out on the road, rather than living in a fixed place. But in this circumstance, and really in general, I could not foresee the events life was about to throw at me. I made the foolish mistake of giving you a "6-month plan" in my last blog, and, not shockingly, I am currently in the process of drastically altering these plans. Thailand has been a roller coaster, but it has also been nothing less than a wonderful experience. Many things have changed in my life and in me. I have given it my all, even when it meant lowering my standards or expectations. This is not always ... read more

March in Thailand brings sweltering temperatures and, therefore, the end of the school year. Private schools have finished classes, and public schools have only 3 weeks left. With the school year coming to an end, I have been reflecting on my teaching experience thus far. I still find it hard to believe I've been an English teacher for 6 months. That is, until I hear my kids using all the vocabulary I've drilled into their brains over the weeks. When I arrived here, I was the first foreign teacher (aka English teacher) that had ever worked at Ban Paklok. So besides the few students whose families work in tourism, these kids spoke no English. Grades 1-6 can now greet me based on the time of day (morning/afternoon/evening), tell me their names, age, where they live, go ... read more

Last Friday, my school had a field trip to the Phuket Zoo. It is a small, run-down place, but it was still fun because the kids were so excited. We went to the crocodile show, where two trainers took turns performing stunts, including one kissing a croc and one putting his head inside the reptile's open mouth. We saw a really impressive elephant show, where these gentle creatures have been trained to do tricks such as ribbon-twirling, basketball, soccer, dancing, playing musical instruments, painting, and walking over audience volunteers without crushing them. The kids found it thrilling! Following lunch we went to a monkey show, which was cute, but the animals were not very co-operative; maybe it was just the heat. The rest of the afternoon was spent checking out the other animals and teaching the ... read more

It's the middle of February and I still keep forgetting its 2013. I took a look back at my New Year's Resolutions last night, just to see how I was doing. So far I think I'm rocking 'em! I have decided that this is going to be a "me" year. Not that last year wasn't, but it's time to be truly happy with myself and set serious goals to achieve that. So excuse me while I brag for a bit, but, hey, its all about me anyway, right? Resolution 1: Body. Do more cardio, rebuild my relationship with running, practice yoga, eat better foods. Progress: I cut out all soda, candy, and chips. I have been doing 30 minutes-1 hour of exercise 6 days a week. I'm mixing up running with high intensity/short duration cardio workouts ... read more

I am way beyond late on this blog, my apologies. Now I will fill you in on the reason(s) why: In many of my last few blogs I have updated you on details about our visas and the various obstacles we have overcome to obtain the correct one. I also told you, with excitement, that I had gotten my work permit. This was a lie. It was not an intentional lie; I was under the impression that when one pays $100 for a legal document at an establishment, the employees then make sure to hand you said document and not let you walk out the door with the incorrect paperwork in your hand. My mistake. Now, I did not come to this realization until I went to the immigration office in early January to apply for ... read more

Happy New Year! First blog of 2013 :) I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and enjoyed a little time off from work. It was my second Christmas away from home, so we tried to make it a memorable one. On Christmas Eve John surprised me with a tree (similar to the one my American Girl doll used to have), complete with ornaments, lights, and tinsel. We wrapped the staircase banisters and strung lights all around our room. The cards were already up on the wall so the whole house came together quite nicely. We had three couchsurfers staying with us at the time- Oleg, from Russia, Monica, from the US, and her friend Luba, from Canada. They appreciated the holiday cheer. After dinner we made hot chocolate (the good imported stuff!) and watched Elf, ... read more

I'm a little late with this blog, sorry. The past two weeks haven't felt that exciting to us (with the exception of the weekends), so I haven't been compelled to write. Here's what you've missed: -I volunteered at the Phuket Ironman -I got my stitches out -John got sick -I got sick -We got two days off school for His Majesty the King's 85th birthday and Constitution Day -The kittens' finally opened their eyes -I got my official work permit (HOORAY!) -We broke 50 on our couchsurfers count -We hosted a mother and her three sons: This could be a whole blog in and of itself, but my mother always told me if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.... But the really fun stuff came on the weekends. Two weekends ... read more

The time has finally arrived for the kitten blog! Our darling Gray Cat waited until the last minute, but she finally had her kittens. She bestowed upon us 3 black-and-gray striped balls of fluff, much less than we were expecting for the size of her tummy! Here is some background: When we moved into our house we semi-adopted a very friendly, greedy stray cat who we named Big Black. He immediately claimed himself as the owner of our house, bossing us around and sleeping wherever he pleased. About a month into our residency, we began to notice a timid gray cat that would sit on our porch. She would run away if you came too close, flinched at every movement, and became extremely uncomfortable with any eye contact. But she was so small and beautiful, so ... read more

So here we are, a week after Thanksgiving and I've been staying on schedule. I fully intended for this blog to be about our wonderful Thai version of Thanksgiving, but that all became slightly less exciting after the events that occurred this past Tuesday night. brace yourselves, it gets ugly. I am generally a cautious, careful, calculated type person. As my friends know, I am also a very safe driver, because I have a very deep-rooted sense on how dangerous motor vehicles can be. So it may come as a shock for you all to hear that on Tuesday night I was in a motorbike accident. Tuesday was a very normal day. It had poured all night, so the gray skies made it hard to get out of bed. At school, the kids were slightly bonkers ... read more
