Oh yeah, two weeks in a row! Well, three days late, but I'm still impressed with myself. At first I didn't really know what to write about this week. We were tuckered out from our Phi Phi trip, and, thus, had another slow week at school. Nothing of too much note happened there, although I am getting very sick of the hokey pokey, while the kids just seem to be loving it more and more. Oh, I also tried my first story time with the kindergarteners. I read them the English book, Five Ugly Monsters. You know the one where the five ugly monsters are jumping on the bed and one falls off and bumps his head? Yeah, so I get to the part where that one ugly monster bumps his head and then scream at ... read more

Ha ha! You didn't think I would write again in a week, but here I am, right on schedule :) So now I get to tell you all about how amazing my life is while you are back at work and school, doing your same old routineā€¦. Last weekend, instead of recovering from our visa run and the start up of classes, we went on an adventure to nearby Bon Island. Our South African friends, Craig and Tam, got placed in one of the larger private schools on the island, so they have a group of 30+ farangs who they hang out with weekly. We were invited to join a large group of them for an authentic South African braai on the beach. We drove down to Rawai to meet everyone and catch a long tail ... read more

From October 11th-31st we had our fall vacation from school. This wasn't that exciting seeing as how we had only been working for 6 weeks, most of which were not even a full 5 days due to illness/bike problems/student testing/some other bizarre Thai event. Not to mention we had only received one paycheck to date, so we weren't exactly swimming in vacation savings. Nevertheless, we still managed to get some exploring/relaxation time. In addition to the Vegetarian Festival ceremonies, we went to the Phuket Aquarium, Nai Harn Beach, Ao Yon waterfall, Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World, and the very secluded Banana Beach. We are beginning to discover the less touristy, more local hangouts around the island and the list keeps growing. We have had a great time getting lost, and thus finding cool spots that ... read more

We made it through the storm! 19 different people, old friends, new friends, and strangers, passed through our house in the past 10 days. Our new record for most surfers in one night is now 10! Beds, couches, floor pillows, and yoga mats filled. The event that brought so may travelers to our door is a Phuket tradition called the Vegetarian Festival. The Vegetarian Festival first began in 1825, when a traveling Chinese opera company came to Phuket to perform for the immigrant Chinese miners. The whole company fell seriously ill, so they restricted themselves to a vegetarian diet until the illness mysteriously cured itself. The people saw this as a sign, and now on the first evening of the ninth lunar month, vegetarian ceremonies continue at each of the Chinese temples around the island. The ... read more

Has it been two weeks already? I'm not very good at this "weekly blog" thing, but please forgive me this time, I was without a functioning laptop for 8 of those days... The past three weeks for me and John have been good, bad, and ugly: -We got sick and missed 4 days of school. The one thing kids share well is their germs. -My birthday! The big (?) 23. John got me flowers, my 2nd and 6th graders sang to me, my couchsurfers all got me presents, dinner and cake. It was perfect. -Both of the motorbikes gave out on us (one had the check engine light come on, the other had trouble starting and very low power once running). The bikes spent two days in the shop being repaired. -My mouse became possessed. It ... read more

Here they are- the long awaited HOUSE PICS! Our house has come together quite nicely, I must say. We've had streams of couchsurfers and other guests, so the large space has high traffic. We like it that way... I've also included some pics from our recent trip to Bang Pae waterfall. It is relatively close to our house (and right by one of our schools). We visited the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project center before making the hike up to the falls. We played in the pools on the way down, making friends with the local kids bathing in the water. they started a splash fight with us and John was throwing them into the water by the end of it. Not much else to say at the moment, just enjoy the photos!... read more

This blog is long overdue, but you might imagine the past two weeks have been a little busy for us! We are loving our new house, and trying to make it a home by filling it with things that make it more comfortable to be (curtains, pillows, candles, etc). With the help of Pinterest, I should be making some pretty cool decorations for our walls, too! We are waiting for one last delivery, and then I PROMISE there will be pictures. Because we have such a large house, we have offered the free space to those in need. We hosted our first couchsurfers, Kathrin and Joy (Germans), last week. It was a great experience, for both them and us, and the requests just keep rolling in. Within the next two months we will be hosting people ... read more

Has it only been a week since my last blog? With all the life changes it feels like months! John and I had a job interview last Thursday with a woman named Tutsie. She grew up in Thailand before moving to the States to attend college and work. She lived in Massachusetts for 8 years, among other places. She now lives in Arizona with her husband and has many jobs and hobbies, but her most recent project was starting a charity for Thai children to gain English education. She currently funds 3 public schools in Phuket, where she recruits native speakers to teach English. Immediately after the interview we were hired to work at two of these schools. On Friday, John and I graduated our course, both with A's. That same we day we were whisked ... read more

A little bit late on this one, sorry if you've been waiting in suspense! The past 10 days or so have been all about immersion. Immersing ourselves in the culture, as well as in teaching experiences. We have cut back on the eating out and, instead, started practicing our culinary skills. Thanks to these nifty little pre-packaged pastes, I can make just about any Thai soup, curry, or noodle dish I crave. This week I conquered tom yum and yellow curry. I also pulled off a decent fried rice with the leftovers. Next week green and massaman curries. The rainy season began Friday, and there hasn't been much sun since. But even in the overcast periods we can still enjoy the beach. In fact, I found some pretty cool critters in the tide pools the other ... read more

It's been a week since I last wrote; I am really going to try to be good about updating this weekly this time! So here's what you missed in the past week: I started classes last Monday, with 5 other students. We lost 3 by Tuesday: the young British girl walked away during mid-morning break the first day and e-mailed the teacher saying she was done, the middle-aged American woman next showed up the second day and wasn't heard from until a few days later saying she was interested anymore, and the middle-aged Australian woman had a mental breakdown on day 2 and really has no idea what she is doing with her life so she decided to just go home. That left me with an older Scottish man and a similarly-aged Thai girl for classmates. ... read more
