Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation April 5th 2009

April 5th: I had heard many great things about Cape Tribulation since arriving in Cairns and so I decided to go on a day trip to explore its great beauty alone, as Kevin decided to pass. Cape Tribulation is a headland located within Daintree National Park and contains some of the vast Daintree Rainforest. Cape Tribulation was named by James Cook in 1770. It was named as such after Captain Cook’s ship ran aground on the reef just off the cape, with Cook writing in his journal “because here began all our troubles”. The Daintree Rainforest runs over 1200 square kilometers and is the largest continuous area of rainforest on the Australian mainland. It is over 135 million years old, the oldest rainforest in the world. It contains a huge variety of wildlife, plants and insects, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City March 31st 2009

After a somewhat short bus ride from Mission Beach, Hillary finally reached Cairns on Mar 31, 2009! Making it to Cairns really made it feel like we had just accomplished something big. This was the first leg of our journey, and it seemed like we had just put one quarter of our trip behind us. For the first time, traveling around the entire country actually seemed plausible. Lol So what’s Cairns like? Well, it’s like a city on the shoreline, that isn’t very big and has very few tall buildings. Everything was within walking distance. The Tuesday that we arrived, we walked down to the YHA and checked in our stuff. The fact that we were in a city and that it was Tuesday meant that we could go see cheap movies that night, so we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach March 28th 2009

The ride to Mission Beach was actually pretty short compared to what we’d been getting used to. A 4 hour greyhound ride isn’t much, especially when movies are playing in the background. Lol When we arrived in Mission Beach, we grabbed the YHA shuttle and headed out to the hostel. This one wasn’t of the norm because it was about 20 minutes out of town, very unusual compared to their typically great locations. But it did allow for a nice, quiet and isolated setting. It felt like a bit log cabin, minus the logs and wintery feel. Lol The next morning we wanted to take a little nature walk. So we left in the morning and headed down the road. And even further down the road. Eventually we found a convenience store and stopped for a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island March 26th 2009

The bus ride from Airlie Beach to Townsville was about 5 hours or so, which got us in around 7pm. By this time, the sun had basically set. Can’t see much of the town when it’s dark. So we hopped right onto the ferry to Magnetic Island. Supposedly the story behind its name is: when Captain Cook sailed by, his compasses started going a bit crazy and he blamed it on the “magnetic forces” of the island. The actual reason is still unknown. From the ferry, we had to take a local bus to the other side of the island, where we found the local YHA. Why do we keep staying at YHAs? Well, the main reason is that we have YHA / Hostelling International cards, which get us a discount. It’s enough of a drop ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays March 24th 2009

Tuesday was the start of our 3 day, 2 night Whitsunday Cruise. This is what makes Airlie Beach so popular; it’s proximity to the tropical paradise! As mentioned in our previous entry, there are tons of options to choose from. Hillary and I were hoping to stay on a sail boat for the cruise, but bookings get taken up quick, so instead of waiting another week, we chose the motorized catamaran with some of the better diving options. Anyways, that morning we packed up and walked down to the harbour. While waiting to board, we met our fellow travelers who’d be sharing the boat with us, and the representation of countries was quite on par with what we’d been seeing during our trip. Canadians, Germans, Brits, Americans… lol We also met our crew: Pete was the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach March 21st 2009

After a 6-hour long overnight bus ride, Kevin and I arrived at Airlie Beach around 6:15 in the morning on March 21st. Airlie Beach is a cute little town right on the coast, and is very popular with tourists as it allows for amazing access to the Whitsunday Islands. Because we arrived so early in the morning, we had to wait a long time to check into our hostel (check-in time wasn’t until 1pm) so we used the morning to do a bit of exploring of the town. We found the local McDonald’s, which is always popular for us because of the free Wi-Fi! Haha And we discovered the man-made lagoon, located right by the water, which is a necessity in the hot weather! Swimming in the ocean is strongly discouraged from Airlie Beach all the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Rockhampton March 16th 2009

Monday we headed to Rockhampton. We took some time in the morning to check out the town of Hervey Bay before heading out, and afterwards we waited at the bus stop for the Greyhound. This trip was about 6 hours, and got us into town after dark. With autumn in full swing by March 1st, it was starting to get darker earlier and earlier. Luckily when we arrived in town, the hostel was kind enough to pick us all up. Keith had taken the same bus as we did to arrive in Rockhampton and since all the supermarkets had already closed up for the night, we (Mike from Ottawa as well) all headed out for some KFC. Nothing like bonding over dinner. The next day it was suggested that while in Rockhampton, we should check out ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island March 14th 2009

Saturday was the day we went to see one of the most popular locations in Australia, Fraser Island. This island is famous for being the largest sand island in the world. Not exactly sure what the means, but I think it means that underneath the trees and forest of the island, is a base of sand that covers everything! We booked ourselves a day trip, so like most things, that meant leaving plenty early. Lol Our bus took us to a ferry, which would take us to the island. The ferry would also take cars and trucks for people who wanted to see the island in a more personal way, many of them being 4 wheel drive sport utility vehicles. The ride was about an hour, and as our luck would have it, we got some ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay March 12th 2009

Thursday March 12 2009, Hillary and I checked out of the Noosa Heads YHA, and looked around the town a bit. We had some time to kill before making our way to the Greyhound bus, so we took a little walk. A couple hours gone, we were all set up and ready for the bus ride to Hervey Bay! It was a pretty lengthy ride, but after about 5 some odd hours, we made it to Hervey Bay. The town actually doesn’t have one main centre, but is dispersed into several little town centres. It keeps it from building up, but makes it difficult for one-stop shopping and sight seeing. We checked into the YHA, and made our way to the local Woolworths for some groceries. Australia seems to have two major food chains, Woolworths and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Noosa Heads March 10th 2009

Monday was our last day in Mudgeeraba before we’d have to keep moving up the east coast. We used it to pack up our bags, and clean up Graham and Lorna’s house before heading out. It’s only right to have them return from their trip to a clean house. Lol That night we watched “The Dish”, another Australian movie suggestion from Graham. It’s about Australia’s vital role regarding the televised moon walk of Apollo 11, and the drama that unfolded behind the scenes. It starred Sam Neil, and Hillary and I both thought it was a great movie! Really funny too! We were repeating lines for days to come. Lol Tuesday we went down Surfers Paradise to catch the Greyhound bus. After a bit of driving, we arrived in Noosa Heads. It was a nice little ... read more
