Friday was our last day in Alice Springs, but it wasn’t without a bit of excitement. In fact, Hillary had lost her jacket from the night before! We spent a good chunk of the day walking back and forth between our own hostel, and the hostel where we met up with our tour mates the previous night. Eventually on the third try, Hillary was successful and finally found it! It was a huge relief for the both of us since our matching jackets were Christmas gifts before leaving on our trip, and they’re the only coats we brought with us. Lol That evening we boarded the bus to head to Darwin. It was a long bus ride, just under 24 hours! We made plenty of stops, but it still wears on you regardless. We left around ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru April 23rd 2009

Thursday was the third day of our Rock Tour trip. With our first day focusing on Kings Canyon and the second on Kata Tjuta, this was our Uluru day. The day before, we tried to see the sunset on Uluru, but rain clouds prevented that. So we made sure to get up bright and early to see the sunrise on Uluru instead, which is supposed to yield similar results. Well, it didn’t last long, but it was definitely amazing! The giant rock goes from grayish one second, to bright red the next! The colour contrast compared to everything else was so crazy! Unfortunately, it just doesn’t last that long, so it was over before we knew it. However, we were really lucky because just as the rock began to glow red, a beautiful rainbow appeared, forming ... read more

Day 2: We were up early on our second day in the Outback, around 6:30am. It’s nice to get up in the Outback before the sun rises, because as soon as it does, the millions and millions of flies swarm around you. After rolling up our swags and eating a quick breakfast, we were on the road again, heading to our next destination. On the way, we stopped for some good, old-fashioned grub digging! Luckly for us, we didn’t find any so we didn’t have to eat any!! Haha We arrived in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park around 9:40am, and got our first glimpse of Uluru!! Uluru is the largest monolithic (single rock) structure in the world. It appears red due to the high level of iron in the sand of the Outback. It is of great ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » King's Canyon April 21st 2009

Kevin and I were both so excited to finally be going on our Outback adventure! The Outback is just so quintessentially Australian, and no trip to Oz would be complete without a trip into the Red Centre. So, we booked a three-day, two-night trip called “The Rock Tour”. Day 1: We were picked up outside our hostel bright and early, 6am! Our tour guide was a really nice guy named Greg, and he picked us up in a 22-seater van. After picking up the rest of our group, we began the long drive to King’s Canyon. Our group kept occupied during the drive to the canyon by: listening to Greg talk about the history of the region, including the culture of the local Aboriginal peoples, and getting to know each other by playing icebreaker games and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs April 16th 2009

Alice Springs was a nice place. For a town (population: about 25,000) in the middle of the outback of Australia (a very harsh and dry climate) it was quite pleasant actually. Shopping centres, outdoor pedestrian malls, restaurants, a movie theatre… But the real reason for most people to travel this far inland… is Uluru (Ayers Rock). Of course it’s still a half day’s trip away (something like a 6 hour drive). So we made sure that the first thing we did was book ourselves a tour out there to see the world’s largest monolithic (single rock) structure, which we did through the appropriately named “The Rock Tour”. But the earliest we could book was 5 days away, so we had plenty of time to check out the town. On our first day, which was Thursday (and ... read more

Tuesday April 14 2009 was our last day in Cairns. We had already spent 2 weeks in the city, which was just as much time as we had spent in Sydney. So it was time to move on to Alice Springs and journey to the Red Centre of Australia! Of course this happened to be on a Tuesday, so early that morning we made sure to check out another movie at the theatre across the street. Lol We saw DragonBall Evolution. It was fun. It took a lot of liberties with the original story, but as long as you recognized that and didn’t let it bother you, it was enjoyable. After the movie we hopped on the Greyhound bus to Townsville. The problem with getting to Alice Springs is that you have to backtrack along the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns April 9th 2009

After three big trips in just half a week, we decided to take it easy for a bit. We’d seen a lot of what there was to see in Cairns (except Great Barrier Reef diving, which we did on the Whitsundays) and there was no rush for another adventure. But one thing we did notice was how much these trips had been costing us! Hillary and I decided that it was time to look for some jobs! Even before leaving Canada, we knew we’d both have to find work at some point if we wanted to stay in Australia for any real length of time. I had estimated we’d have about 5-6 months (from beginning to end) before we’d be out of money. Considering that we’d been gone now 2 and a half months meant that ... read more

April 8th: The good thing, at least the good thing for me, about Kevin not wanting to go on any tours is that I get to go on two (instead of just one)! For my second day trip I went on a tour focusing on the rainforest, waterfalls, and Paronella Park (castles!). Again, I was picked up right outside of the hostel very early in the morning by the tour guide in a small, ten-seater van. The group was small today: 5 other people, all of them Australian (middle-aged), and myself! They were all very nice and I spent much of the day explaining where I was from, how long I had been in Australia, how I was liking it, what I have seen, etc. After picking up the whole group, we drove south, away from ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Kuranda April 6th 2009

The day after Hillary’s big trip to Cape Tribulation, the two of us went on another trip, this time together. Our destination was Kuranda. Throughout our travels, we’d asked around for suggestions of what to visit around Australia. It was a fairly broad question, but on more than one occasion it was suggested to visit Kuranda and take the Skyrail. So now that we were in Cairns, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. That morning we took the tour bus out of the city to the beginning of the Skyrail. You see, what most people do is take the Skyrail to Kuranda (which is a small town) and then take the scenic railway back to Cairns. You could do it in the reverse order, but if you’re only going once, it’s suggested to do the Skyrail ... read more
