We took the train to Brisbane a second time, and decided to check out the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary!! (I love zoos and all things relating to animals) We spent the whole afternoon there and besides koalas, we saw wombats, kangaroos (which we were able to pet), a wide variety of birds, dingoes, cassowaries, snakes and other reptiles. They had a little farm, with animals like sheep, goats, ducks, and chickens. We saw a sheep dog show! The farmer demonstrated how border collies are used to herd sheep. (This made me think of Molly). The highlight of the day for me was having my picture taken while holding a koala!! He was so cute and barely moved at all. He just clung to my shirt. Queensland is the only state in Australia where it is legal ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Surfers Paradise March 6th 2009

On Friday, March 6th, we decided to take the bus from Mudgeeraba to Surfers Paradise. We first stopped at the huge mall in Surfers, called Pacific Fair. Here, we had lunch and did a bit of shopping. Then, we headed to the beach where I had my very first Aussie surf lesson! (yay!) The lesson was two hours and I was put into a group of about ten. We were all brand new to surfing. We were taught first how to ‘catch a wave’ and then how to stand up on the surfboards. The surfboards we were given were massive, going way over my head. Maybe 8 feet long. This is because the shorter the board, the better the surfer you need to be. So, beginners get the longest boards. I loved my lesson! It was ... read more

Thursday was our first trip into Brisbane. We walked down to the Mudgeeraba train station, where we bought our day tickets to the city. The system in Brisbane works using zones, so by buying our tickets from one of the furthest zones and heading right into the city’s core, it basically gave us unlimited travel anywhere we wanted. It was a shame though that we arrived just as the train was leaving. Though a half hour wait wasn’t really much, it still tends to be discouraging. Lol On the train, heading into the city, the scenery was quite nice. Australia really has some lovely scenery when traveling long distances. Plenty of rolling green hills to see along the east coast. Once into the city, we headed for the pedestrian outdoor mall, which was a suggestion of ... read more

Tuesday morning we left the hostel in Surfers Paradise and spent some time on the beach (beach pics were accidentally put in our last Blog entry). Once we had our fun in the sun, we took the hostel’s courtesy bus into the city where we met up with Graham and Lorna again, who drove us out to their house in Mudgeeraba! It’s a small town inland from Surfers Paradise, but it was connected by transit to both Surfers and Brisbane, which made it a great home base! Once in town, Lorna took us for a little tour around the area, and showed us everything we needed to know to find: bank, grocery store and the movie rental store. Lol That night we all had a pizza dinner together with their son and grand son, and relaxed ... read more

Leaving Byron Bay after just one day was tough, but our next location was one that boasted some pretty high expectations with just its name… Surfers Paradise! Our bus ride was fairly short this time, and when we arrived we were greeted by Graham and Lorna! You see, before leaving Canada, it was suggested by our friends the Walters that we should give their friends in Australia a ring. This was a great offer, but Hillary and I didn’t want to bother anyone, especially people we had never met before. But we were assured that this would not be the case. If anything, we couldn’t have been further from the truth. Graham and Lorna are two of the most kind and generous people we had ever met! They welcomed us into their lives and we couldn’t ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay March 1st 2009

Our next stop was Byron Bay! This is a small town on the eastern coast which is very popular with backpackers. It is so popular in fact, we could only get one night in the hostel. So, we left Yamba very early in the morning and arrived in Byron Bay by midmorning, thereby giving us as much time in Byron Bay as possible. After settling into the hostel, we decided to check out the beach. Byron Bay is very popular with surfers, and sure enough, many people were out in the water enjoying the waves. Byron Bay is the most easterly point of mainland Australia! Right near this point was a huge lighthouse on top of a hill. So, that evening, we decided to take the hour and a half trek along the beach and up ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Yamba February 27th 2009

Our Greyhound bus on Friday left Coffs Harbour around 6am, which meant getting up much earlier to take a cab down to the bus stop. Very early day. But the bus ride was short, and we were in Yamba before we knew it. Yamba was a really nice little town. The YHA hostel there seemed really new, which was awesome! And it was located right on the main street, rather than out of town like some other towns we had visited. The other thing was that it was pretty quiet too. You feel a little bad when a nice place isn’t getting very much business, but on the flipside it’s awfully nice when everything is super clean because it’s not very busy. Lol When we checked in that morning, we went back to bed and napped ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour February 23rd 2009

Monday February 23 was the day we left Port Macquarie. Our bus was mid day, so that meant carrying around our stuff while biding some time. Our bags are big and heavy, but we’d been getting used to them. The bus ride to Coffs Harbour was another 3 hours. Once in town, we were picked up by a courtesy bus that would take us to the hostel. A lot of hostels have this, which is extremely handy when it’s located several kilometers out of town. That night we checked out the local port, and relaxed at the hostel. Long bus rides definitely take a lot out of you! The next day was a fairly lazy day. I had been given a head’s up from a roommate that the community centre next door had some free wireless ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Port Macquarie February 21st 2009

Saturday morning we got up and packed for the bus. We were starting to get used to this “changing towns” every few days now, so packing and unpacking wasn’t too tough. Anyways, we soon hopped on the Greyhound, and were off to Port Macquarie! Port Macquarie was a nice little town. It seemed to be best known for its Koala Hospital, and its beaches. However heavy rains in Australia were washing a lot of soil out to the ocean, making the water at the beaches fairly muddy. In other words, the beaches weren’t too nice at that time. So Saturday afternoon we explored the town, and used some internet at McDonalds instead. Once back at the hostel, we watched Live Free or Die Hard. But in Australia, it’s called Die Hard 4.0. Weird how titles are ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Newcastle February 18th 2009

After spending two whole weeks in Sydney, a city which we loved, Kevin and I decided it was time to start checking out the rest of Australia. We bought Mini Traveler bus passes from Greyhound, which would give us 45 days to travel from Sydney to Cairns, up the east coast, and allow us to hop-on and hop-off as often as we want along the way. So, on Wednesday, February 18th, we hopped on our first Greyhound bus heading north to Newcastle! Newcastle is located 162km north-east of Sydney. It is the second most populated city in New South Wales (after Sydney, of course), with a population of approximately 288,000. It is located directly on the coast and has some amazing beaches. After arriving at Newcastle, we located our hostel, which is about a five minute ... read more
