Hillary and I had been using the Northern Territory Reference Library quite a bit for the free wireless internet. Unfortunately’ one day issues arose with their hardware and it was taken away from the lower levels of the library (the quiet areas). This left only the main level which was crowded with other backpackers and therefore had a very slow and unreliable connection. So we stopped going. But the Darwin City Libraries had internet too (though no wireless), so we became temporary members. Talk about a good find! It never occurred to us at first, but this would be a great way to borrow movies and books to keep us busy here in Darwin too. Since we were travelers, we’d have to put down a deposit, but it was worth it for the convenience. Not only ... read more

In Canada, July 1st is an important holiday. It’s Canada Day, the day that celebrates the unity of our country! In Darwin, July 1st is also a holiday. It’s Territory Day! I think Territory Day is supposed to represent when the Northern Territory was given a certain amount of independence from the rest of the country, it being a territory and all. I’m not totally sure, but it has something to do with the way the territory is governed. But the important thing to remember is that it’s the only day in Australia that people are allowed to buy and use fireworks! And wow, do people go all out! Hillary and I heard fireworks all night, from the second it was dark to the time we went to bed. At least we didn’t have to go ... read more

By the time late June rolled around, we were getting pretty comfortable living in Darwin (Karama to be exact). Hillary and I had gotten into a traditional work routine, and were saving as much as we could so that we could have just as much fun on the west coast as we had had on the east coast. I was lucky enough to have basically been guaranteed work at CDU for the few months I’d be in Darwin. This stemmed from a job where I was just being renewed every other week, so I was really happy with that. And Hillary decided to keep working with ITEC, even though she wasn’t always thrilled with the amount of work coming her way. One luxury we kept active was watching movies. Now that we were making money, we ... read more

Hi, it’s Hillary! That’s right, I’m doing a blog entry! I thought I’d write a short entry on my work experiences here in Darwin. As Kevin mentioned in an earlier entry, I ultimately had no problem finding employment. Initially, after arriving in Darwin, my plan was to find a job outside of health care. You know, for a change of scenery. I quickly learned, however, that employers in the hospitality field will only hire people (especially travelers looking for short-term employment) with hospitality experience. Well, that counted me out! And so, with my only experience being health care, I quickly found a job at ITEC Health, an agency, as a Personal Care Assistant. I couldn’t work as an RN here in Australia because I do not have an Aussie nursing licence, but I thought working for ... read more

By the week of June 1st, we’d been living in Karama for two weeks already. We’d gotten used to the bus schedule, our new jobs, and our new home. Although, one thing hadn’t been quite resolved yet… laundry. We didn’t have a washing machine in the house, and well, Hillary and I weren’t quite that adept at washing by hand. We gave it the ol’ college try, but for a full week’s worth of clothes, it wasn’t quite going to work out. So we had to find the closest laundromat. Turns out, there aren’t too many around. Every hostel we had previously stayed at had their own, so laundry never weighed too heavily on our minds. Eventually, we found one in Nightcliff (one of the bigger neighbourhoods around Darwin). In fact, it was right around the ... read more

Up to this point, I had worked about a week at Charles Darwin University (CDU, the only university in the Northern Territory) as a custodian. I wasn’t guaranteed work for our entire stay in Darwin, but they said they’d need me for a couple more weeks at least. The work consisted of a lot of small jobs around the university. I worked with John, who was a full time employee at CDU. Those first few days I also worked with Gill, who like myself was an employee of Julia Ross, a temp agency. Most jobs at the uni were what you’d expect as a custodian: moving furniture, setting up for functions and removing useless items. The university has other staff as cleaners and maintenance employees, so we were basically the heavy lifters. A good way to ... read more

The morning after getting back from my weekend of work at the Fred’s Pass Show was supposed to be a fairly slow one. Hillary and I were to sleep in, rest up and move to our new home in Karama. But an early phone call at 8am put a wrench into those plans. I was woken up by Julia Ross, one of the temp agencies I had applied to earlier in the week. Turns out they had some work for me! It was a week’s worth (Mon-Fri) doing custodial work at the only university in the Northern Territory, Charles Darwin University. Thing was, they needed me right that second. I was barely awake, but needed to catch the next bus out to the campus to work. Even worse was that I didn’t really have any clean ... read more

Monday was a quiet day. We still hadn’t made much progress on finding an apartment, and I wasn’t having much luck with finding work. It was getting a little depressing. But Tuesday, Hillary and I both had a good reason to cheer up. Star Trek! Awesome movie! We both loved it. Action packed, great effects, and laugh-out-loud funny. Zachary Quito made a great Spock too! Could have been a tad longer though. Now that I think about it, this might have been the turning point for us. Wednesday Hillary and I saw the house that we’d eventually move into! And you know what the funny thing was? After all the hard work and toiling I spent trying to find a place for the two of us, the first place that Hillary found in the newspaper and ... read more

Monday morning we decided to check out of the YHA and move into another hostel. YHAs are usually some of the better places to stay in most cities, but the prices had gone up as of the first of May (for the dry season, which is tourist season), and it was getting pretty pricey to stay there. We found another hostel down the road called the Youth Shack. The rooms were actually a lot nicer, and with fewer people. The kitchen was also a lot bigger, whereas the YHA’s was tiny. All in all, it worked for the better to move out actually. Lol As per tradition, we saw another movie on Tuesday. This time it was Wolverine: X-Men Origins. About time too, as we’d been waiting for this movie to come out for a long ... read more

On Monday April 27, we began to take our job search seriously. In fact, we spent that morning looking for jobs on the internet, and then pulled out our good clothes and went handing out resumes! Ironing in a hostel is not the easiest thing to do. Lol Hillary and I focused on job agencies around the city. For myself, it started out well, with some companies seeming pretty interested in my experience. But as things went along, it didn’t seem to be getting me anywhere. Hillary on the other hand started out terribly, with some agencies not even taking her resume due to her experience being solely in health care, but later in the day she was offered a job on the spot! This agency specialized in health care aids, and Hillary took it. It ... read more
