This was our shuttle bus to the ferry.
Saturday was the day we went to see one of the most popular locations in Australia, Fraser Island. This island is famous for being the largest sand island in the world. Not exactly sure what the means, but I think it means that underneath the trees and forest of the island, is a base of sand that covers everything! We booked ourselves a day trip, so like most things, that meant leaving plenty early. Lol

Our bus took us to a ferry, which would take us to the island. The ferry would also take cars and trucks for people who wanted to see the island in a more personal way, many of them being 4 wheel drive sport utility vehicles. The ride was about an hour, and as our luck would have it, we got some more rain. Lol However, it was fairly short lived.

On the island, we climbed into these specially built trucks for driving on sand. The rear passengers’ cabin was set on shock absorbers, in order to try and keep the ride relatively smooth. It wasn’t something you really noticed until you looked ahead to the driver’s cabin, and saw him bouncing all over the

place. Lol

The sand on the island was really nice; very fine and soft. Supposedly this was the sand used to build the Hubble telescope! But taking sand from the island is no longer allowed, which makes sense considering how many tourists wanted to bring home a couple of handfuls. Lol We toured some fresh water lakes, and took a little nature walk through the forest. The island has so many tourists these days that many of the older walking paths had to be outfitted with raised platforms to keep from destroying the vegetation! We stopped for lunch at one of the resorts on the island, which was nice since it was a buffet style meal. After that, we made our way to the beach to check out the shore. Unfortunately, though, a cyclone has just recently gone through the area tearing up much of the beach. That mixed with the high tide, washed away a lot of the sand making it too difficult to drive all the way to the north end of the island. That meant that we wouldn’t be able to see the famous shipwreck on the island. It was unfortunate, but you can’t control mother

nature while on vacation. Lol

We then took off for Lake Mackenzie, which is Fraser Island’s most famous fresh water lake. This is the lake that everyone goes to for swimming and relaxing. But along the way, we caught a glimpse of one of Fraser Island’s well known locals, a dingo! They look a lot like dogs and seem to act like them too, but people need to be careful not to treat them like dogs, especially feeding them. Like most animals, when dingoes are fed by people they become dependant, and with that, they start wandering into the more populated areas with people looking for food. They start to forget how to hunt themselves, and eventually starve to death. To negate this, any dingoes who start becoming dependant on human food are caught and put down. So remember, don’t feed dingoes!

Anyways, back to Lake Mackenzie! When we got there, it was pretty busy. Lots of tourists were swimming and lying out on the beach. Hillary and I both went for a swim, and I definitely enjoyed it. Swimming in the ocean is nice and all, but I’m just not a salt water kind of guy. Lol

Time to explore the island!
After an hour or so, we packed up and headed back to the ferry. It wasn’t long before we were back at the hostel, and I was sleeping the evening away. Hillary luckily was able to entertain herself with one of her favourite movies, The American President. I eventually woke up to work on some blog updates, but after a long day of travel, it didn’t take much to have the two of us snoring away. Lol

Sunday was an unwinding day. We hung out, and worked on some more blogs. Ya, sounds strange that we spend so much time working on the blogs, yet we’re still so behind. Haha That afternoon we decided to check out one of the more “Nolan” oriented family past times… competitive board games! Lol A good way to meet new people, Hillary and I were joined by Keith and a friend of his for a serious game of monopoly. Lol A good way to spend the day. That night was our last in Hervey Bay, so we checked out some of the stars out by the water. Once you get into the darker areas, you’re able to see the Milky Way, and constellations

The first little beach we stopped at. With so many people, sort of takes you out of the whole "you and nature" thing.
like Orion and the Southern Cross. It’s such a beautiful sight. Anyways, we called it a night and started to pack up for our ride to Rockhampton.
