Here's my sarcastic take on my adventures big and small while living in China

Another pastor took me to climb a mountain. This requires a dusty motorbike ride, a few stops at houses to gather people, eating of roti and very salty curried vegetables, and we were off. They seemed doubtful that I could do it, I said I walk for hours at a time on flat ground so going up for a shorter time should be okay...This "hike" consists of 1800 stairs. After about 10 minutes of a pretty brisk pace my head started pounding and I couldn't get enough air. We stopped and drank some water and up we went. It's hard to be tired when small children, older people, and ladies in flip-flops are passing you by. So we made it! Then we came back down and had lunch at this beautiful family's house. fun day, my ... read more

This was another trip to the village area. This is a different area from before. We went to visit another pastor and the clinic. Uncle, as with many other things, saw a great need for health care for these village people who can't get to a doctor so he made it happen. I am very inspired by such people. Also, I am very grateful that such people exist.... read more

Hi, so many things to say over a few weeks' time. Things are great, the weather is cool in the morning and evening and it gets a big hot in the afternoon. You can cool down or warm up by sitting in the sun or shade, simple as that. They try to stuff me with food and always make sure I am okay. They are wonderful. Summary of the situation: I am in Chitwan staying at a Children's Home/church. There are 21 kids here right now. The Pastor and his family are wonderful. There is so much smiling and laughing. The kids have had a lot of holidays, I think they have had more time off than in school. It is insanely relaxing here. I play with kids or sit with them while they study, I ... read more

I added an overview of the first photos. I arrived safely, almost missed my first flight. The family is wonderful and makes sure I am well fed and warm. It is so warm here in the afternoons! I am happy. I have gone with the Uncle/dad/pastor to visit some of the area's churches in more rural areas. I am constantly thinking I am just happy. I know this place isn't perfect and I am seeing more and more that it is a real place and it is a very poor country, but I am so happy to be here. Playing with kids a lot!... read more

Alright, if anybody is still reading this, here's the update: I leave within the next two weeks!!! Out of China, into Nepal, then India, then home. I finished teaching all my classes-college and children. It's nice to have a little time to do nothing before leaving. I think about the fact that I am really going back to Nepal and I feel so excited, then nauseous hah. I don't take it as a bad sign though, I feel like people don't think it's the smartest decision for me to go there. It's right though, I want to be there, and I can be there, so why not! So here's the plan: I will spend a month at the children's home with the kids I met last summer. Then I will travel around Nepal for a month ... read more

I started teaching kids again Monday...it went really bad...I think they started school that day and then came to the training school in addition on the same day. They were out of control. One kid basically screamed and ran around the room for an hour. My boss sat in on two of the classes so I spent most of the time with my mind blocked by self-doubt...When you add that to the attitude I had been having you end up with Tuesday and the question, "Why did I come back here?" Apologies to everyone who encountered me Tuesday and before, it was not good. I started planning my escape...leave China after this term, travel in Nepal, and then be in Chicago at a really good time...and then I remembered what makes the world go around...it's not ... read more

I am back in China and just want to say how much I miss Nepal. It sounds foolish since I was there such a short time but something about that country just fits right into a space in my heart...cheesy but how else can I explain it. It's all a feeling. There's no logic or reason to why I wanted to go there so badly or why I want to be back so much. Returning to China means Chinese people and the frustrating things of the culture here. It means responsibility and work and real life. But I must say things that also exhist here are a washing machine, or even the ability to wash clothes by hand the way I know how, and to hang them to dry without mistakenly hanging them on the cow ... read more

Driving back to Kathmandu and flying out to Kunming I got an hour to walk in Thamel (downtown Kathmandu) before catching the car to the airport so I walked and did a little shopping. Sorry people, no gifts this time. All the flights were delayed at Kathmandu. I was a miserable person this day. I am such a brat sometimes. Generally speaking, the Chinese people were very very loud and I had a headache and decided to be cranky. It was a bad combination...someday I will return. I rely a lot on that : )... read more

A couple guys from the church took Mollika and me to see the waterfall. So we rode on motorbikes back on the road where people fall off. I am not a toucher as you may know...so I spent the ride trying really hard not to touch the guy-also it was crazy hot. The road is bumpy and we would quickly speed up and slow down as we encountered cars. We got stuck in the mud once but I never fell off even though I held onto the back of the bike instead of the guy. yessss. It was a hot ride and walk but the waterfall was beautiful. The others had to return but my driver friend took me to see the temple where all the orange people go. I think. I should have taken more ... read more
