Up at 6 am, breakfast at 6:30, game drive at 7 am, leaving a bit later than most groups in camp. Saw lots of beautiful birds - lilac breasted rollers, secretary birds, vultures, tawny eagle. The list goes on and on. Beautiful light for photography for the first few hours. On the game drive, we found two cheetah brothers resting under a tree, not doing a whole lot. Up for a stretch, then lie down again. We were amazed by the full panarama of the savana sprinkled with acacia trees and dry golden grass to the horizon. Great photography everywhere we turned. The roof on our Land Rover raises up so we can stand up on the seats for a better view. Lovely blue sky day, with a few clouds rolling in as the morning progressed.  ... read more

This was a very long day. Got up at 4 am, transferred reduced gear to 9-person Land Rovers, drove to the Crater rim in a fog. As we climbed, it was getting colder and colder. Maasai people with their cattle were everywhere. When we stopped for a photo, a Maasai warrior came up to the vehicle wanting to sell his spear. We got the impression that he had done this before. Richard shook hands with him and his hands were very cold. They stool keep to their traditions of wearing the colorful. Blankets, and living off their cattle, drinking cow blood and milk. We went down to the inside of the crater and within half an hour, we saw a soad lake with hundreds of flamingos. Not too much later, we saw a cheetah stalking a ... read more

We stayed at the Meserani Snake park, just west of Arusha. In the morning, we looked at the snakes, crocs and birds of prey that the snake park had in captivity. Then we visited the Maasai cultural museum to hear about how the Maasai are keeping their culture alive. There was a model home and also life size depictions of various scenes from Maasai lilfe. This was narrated by a Maasai man, who answered many questions from our group.   The off to Mto aw Mbu. On the way, we had an opportunity for a more authentic look at Maasai life by visiting a Maasai village. The ladies and children were ready for us, with a wonderful singing welcome. The women put a necklace on Richard and he joined them for a little fun. Small children ... read more

This will be somewhat fractured because we are posting in a hurry: Geckos was waiting fro us at the hotel and we left Nairobi with twenty tourists, a guide(Malinga), driver (hungery man) and cook(Peter). First stop, a save on size grocery store for bottled water and nibbles. Then we hit the highway south for Tanzina. Suburban Nairobi is a endless series of homes in poverty  condition, dirt roads with ruts, cars with hood up, and garbage everywhere. Men sitting around vacantly where Richard would have been busy cleaning up. Eventually we left Nairobi behind and entered vert dry savanna with colorful Maasai herdsmen tending sheep, goats and cattle. Isolated fields suddenly produced a family walking on a dirt trail, or a ten year old boy minding a hundred goats. These boys waved as we passed and ... read more

Our hotel (Panafric) provides all the amenities of a Vancouver 4 star with the additional security of a room safe and security guard on every floor (big smile and no gun). At the hotel entrance on our way out for an afternoon walk we were advised to be back by 5 PM and the security folk there had guns. Lots of people walking on the street although we saw buses which were crowded and tightly packed. Women very smart in bright colored long dresses. Men in drab tee shits and baggy pants, a few children in bare feet.   Of course we were marks for every safari broker in Nairobi. Some asked about Canada (my Canada flag pin a give away) but were disappointed when we said we were leaving with a group and took their ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow after an uneventful flight, greeted by Leanne & Brad who came to pick us up. Personal service door to door. How nice! We knew that this weekend would be the only days that they didn't have to work, so we took advantage of the time and good weather to go for a walk and do a maternity photo shoot of the twins-expecting couple in Regents Park. We were very pleased with the result - some of the best ones are on Kayla's Facebook page. Leanne's baby bump is getting quite big already, and getting bigger by the day, with three more months yet to go. We settled quite nicely into a daily routine for the rest of the week. On Monday, we celebrated Richard's birthday by attending a BBC Proms concert at ... read more

Time is marching on and we leave in a few weeks, so it's time to get out the lists and start packing. Our usual method is to buy any gear needed well in advance, then start laying it all out. We start with everything but the kitchen sink and throw things out once we see there is no room. We've allowed one small backpack each and one soft-sided duffle. No formed suitcases or anything on wheels for us because the duffles have to be stuffed in a variety of places, not least of which is a locker on the overland truck that will be home for most of 47 days. Never mind the even smaller places we will have for 1-2 day excursions into the Serengeti, on Zanzibar and in the Okavango Delta. We are taking ... read more

Hampstead Heath & Wedding Party Today, Saturday we let Leanne and Brad be our guides to North London. So we walked from home to Hampstead Heath (40 minutes) in a slight drizzle. Lunch from the local Saturday morning stands at the Heath was yummie Sausage Burgers and Coke. We got a good view of London to the south from Parliament Hill and tried to spy Greenwich with Brad's binoculars and iPhone ( for directions). Leanne went off for a hair appointment and Brad lead through the network of park trails, trees all in fall colours. That evening we participated in the Leanne and Brad wedding celebration - London version. We taxied with the happy couple, dressed in wedding day White Dress and Suit to Shepherd's Bush and spend the night visiting with their many and some ... read more

Walking the Thames - South Side What a beautiful day for a walk along the Thames - sunny, warm and lots of people to watch. Kayla was snapping pictures at every turn in the river. This route from Westminister Bridge to Tower Bridge has a wide and very popular river side walkway, much more accessible than the narrow and sometime non existent walkway on North side. As we were on the south side we got great sun-filled views across the river to "The City" the original town of London with St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower mixed in with dramatic new architecture. On the Southwark side most of the buildings are new and equally dramatic design. East towards Tower Bridge is the new City Hall on a spacious and shiny walkway called the Queens Walk. Rocks, Dinosaurs and Albert Today Richard took Kayla to the Natural History Museum in Kensington so she could see the rock room for herself. She patiently wandered through the 300 cases of rock samples without a single yawn. Richard could have stayed there all day but there were still dinosaurs to see. Then a short walk over to Hyde Park, a picture of the Albert Memorial, glorious fall colours along the Serpentine and across Green Park to Marble Arch. We reached Camden Town tube stop in time to buy supper fixings at the very international and busy Sainsbury’s. Then home for supper and Africa and wedding picture viewing with Leanne and Brad. ... read more
