Isla Santa Cruz - Sunday 10th June Well, after a very early morning bus ride to Guayaquil and a very short flight we arrived at Baltra airport. Basically this involved a tarmac runway and ´baggage claim´which was literally a pile of bags on the ground yet amazingly enough all our bags came through unscathed (Iberia could learn from this - it is not necessary to leave my bag behind then, when it finally does get it to me two days later, deliver it broken!) We joined the Nationals queue to pay the park entrance fee only to have an irate (and very sweaty) airport man come and yell at us and try to drag us to the tourist queue. We told him we had CENSO to which he replied we could pay the national fee ... read more

We didn't make it to the bus terminal until almost twelve (when have we ever been on time!) but made it to Cajas in good time. Found a use for all the Spanish the guys have been teaching us when we had to yell at the guy on the bus who wanted to charge us for the full fare to Guayaquil even though we were getting off after only an hour and we weren't allowed seats! He backed off as the Ecuadorians sitting near us decided to help us out. Had another argument with the guy on the gate that we DID have CENSO and we were NOT going to pay the tourist fee ($1.50 as opposed to $10) despite only having papers as they were out of the actual cards. Hope it's going to be ... read more

Well we started the trip today with the intention of getting to Los Frailes, an absolutley beautiful beach in a National Park. Slight problem being that, as it is a National Park, you can't sleep there - you have to stay three hours away and go up for the day. That, the fact it was a further five hours than the beaches we usually go to and we'd have to pay the National Park fee put us off enough to decide on just going back to Montañita. Ended up in the same hostel as last time and then went out in search of food which was very good although the waiter decided to sit down with us to take the order, forget us for quite some time and then admit to being 'so high' as ... read more

Good day at school and I got to see the video of the kid's performance for Dia de la Madre that I missed last week. Lou's ballet actually looked very good despite her worrying. Met all the others after school randomly at the side of a road where Charo was going to pick us up. The boys went with her while the rest of us piled into her brother's truck for a very windy ride through Cuenca and then an equally bumpy ride up dirt tracks in the hills to Charo's hacienda. Not quite sure why she calls it a farm when the only sign of farming are a few cows behind her house who actually belong to someone else. Chilled out in the most gigantic double hammock ever before most of us (me not ... read more

Well I'm past the halfway mark and realised I haven't actually written anything about where I work. When I say realised I of course mean am reminded of that fact at every possible opportunity by certain people who are stuck in England with nothing better to do than check my blog all the time! Ok, my week days are as follows - Adinea from 8.00am until 12.30pm followed by Tadeo Torres from whenever we get there til whenever everything's finished. Adinea is a disabled school about fifteen minutes walk from where we live in Cuenca. I have no idea how many kids there are as I'm still discovering new classes (One of which I walked in on trying to take a short cut back from the kitchens today actually) There is absolutley no rhyme or ... read more

I didn't manage to make it to school due to a temperature of 40 degrees C on Friday for Dia de la Madre so unfortunatley I missed Lou's ballet performance. Apparently all went well and Lou returned to drag me to the bus terminal to meet the others. Horrible journey to Loja whilst throwing up out of the bus window (you know you want to hear this!) Arrived and had to get another bus to Vilcabamba - a tourist relaxation place apparently which hardly any Ecuadorians go to. Never mind, all we want this weekend is a little R&R after our wek's hard work. Yes, we do work hard for those of you who are always doubting me! Arrived in Vilcabamba where we checked into´Hostal Rendez-Vous´ - looked absolutely gorgeous from what I could see ... read more

Caught the overnight bus to Quito once again and actually managed to sleep for most of it which is always a good thing. Arrived and walked to our usual haunt of Coffee Tree for breakfast (or in my case chocolate cake and hot chocolate - I needed a sugar rush!) before heading off to find a hostal. Had to tour four hostals before finding one (two were full and two were expensive - a whole $8 a night!) Ended up in Centro del Mundo - a so called 'party hostal' according to the Lonely Planet but looked perfectly alright. Checked in and then split off into three groups to go on a re-con mission about Galapagos which we are determined to book whilst we are here as every travel agent seems to promise 'brilliantly cheap' ... read more

Had a quiet Saturday morning at home before heading into town to meet the others. We dragged them to the hat shop where we had coffee and brownies. Randomly enough there were huge pieces of paper and pencils out on the coffee tables so we were kept entertained by trying to come up with a poster and name for Jack's jazz group. Hung around in Cuenca before walking to Sophie's house (which took a good half an hour despite saying it would only be ten minutes) for her to get changed and joined the others for another walk, this time to the hotel Lyn was staying at. Lyn's husband and Charo were there as well for dinner and to discuss how our placements were going. Unfortunately some football team were also staying there so our ... read more

Well we actually have a weekend to spend in Cuenca instead of rushing off somewhere as Lyn from GAP is coming out to check that all our placements are ok. Had the morning off school as well on Friday as the teachers had some meal thing to go to for all teachers of disabled children in Cuenca. Really quite random but I'm not going to argue with time off. Lou and I headed into town to go to an internet cafe to call home before going for ice creams. Really starting to be a bad habit! Next we walked down to the river to find a Panama Hat shop which turned out to be a shop/museum/workshop/cafe so all good. Had fun trying them all on (although technically they are not Panama hats at all, they ... read more

Finished another gruelling week at work so we took off on the Friday afternoon for the beach. Went to Playas this time as we couldn't face the nine hour trek to Montañita although this one ended up taking seven hours anyway. Arrived late so checked into a hostal which is best described as "muy basico". Went out for food before going back to the hostal which was absolutely boiling inside. Didn't really matter as I managed to fall asleep fully clothed within a few minutes. Woke up to a hot if slightly overcast day and headed off to the beach where we set up camp after having haggled for a parasol and chairs. I went straight into the sea thereby washing off all the carefully applied sun cream (I did not want a repeat of ... read more
