Actually managed to be on time today and we set off walking from the school to Quito old town. We´re heading for the Panecillo (literally translated as ´little bread roll´!) which is a hill in the old town with a giant statue on it. ´The Virgin of Quito´statue lines up exactly with the Basilica we visited on Tuesday and can actually be seen straight though a heart shaped window in the centre of the church. No idea how they managed to be so exact! Took a rather interesting local bus part of the way where the driver´s aim seems to be to throw as many people off the bus as possible by taking every corner way too fast. I honestly don´t know if it´s more dangerous being in the path of a bus or actually inside ... read more

Had a rather uneventful day at school with yet more grammar. I know it is needed but I can´t help thinking it would be better if I actually learned to say something. After all, Í´ve got to be speaking Spanish for the next six months! Went to the internet cafe in the afternoon where the owner is really getting to recognise us, we come in so often. Really nice place where they have tea (always important) and a fish tank with mini Easter Island statues inside. Sophie B stayed behind as she wasn´t feeling well but wanted to come out that night. We´d agreed to meet up with the others at Papaya Net at 7 having finally managed to contact them by leaving messages on the board at school for them to answer in the afternoon. ... read more

Another day at school and we were up and out on time having just got used to morning lessons starting at 8.30am. Got to school to find we were going straight back out again (they could have told us and saved us walking up to the fourth floor). It is some celebration in Ecuador today which seems to translate as ´Flag Day´. As far as I could tell with my limited Spanish it´s something to do with the end of the war with Peru however long ago it was. Anyway, the teachers took us to the local school where all the kids were dressed up in uniforms that looked like sailor suits. Basically, it was the day to show off what we have heard them practising every morning since we arrived. Drumming and marching bands just ... read more

Well, back to the grind off school after a fun weekend. Decided to go to the internet cafe early morning and we were just walking out the door when Lorena came to say the school had just rung to ask where we were. Apparently they had decided to change us three from afternoon to morning lessons and just hadn´t bothered to tell us! Very helpful and proof of just how laid-back everone seems to be here (except the bus drivers who are of course intent on killing everyone). Had to run to school and made it there for nine. Only half an hour late and seeing as we are always late I don´t think anyone noticed. I have a new teacher, Carlos (the idea is to let us get used to different accents by changing teachers ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Mitad del Mundo February 25th 2007

Well, it seems silly to have been in Ecuador for a week now and not have seen the equator (although we have crossed it several times without knowing!) so our Sunday trip is to Mitad del Mundo. Apparently it is completely ´touristic´ (have heard that word so much here I can´t even decide if it is real English or not!) but it has to be done. We´d seen the buses go from across the road form our house all week so we managed to get on one ok after stocking up at the bakery for the day. It was a lot easier going places with just the three of us instead of the whole group - less people to get lost! The bus was reasonable comfortable allowing for Ecuadorian roads and bus drivers that seem to ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo February 24th 2007

Arrived late last night in Otavalo - a market town 2 and a half hours away from Quito. Had a bit of a manic time at Quito bus terminal. We all had to pile into taxies to get there and whilst two taxis turned up we missed the bus as we were waiting fot the third. Loads of men around yelling at us that we want to get on ´their´bus so we just stood in a group trying to ignore them (no easy feat I assure you). The others finally turned up (their taxi had taken them to the wrong place - no idea how as I thought there was only one bus terminal in Quito!) thankfully as it was very dark by this point and we had been warned it is not a good place ... read more

Woke up really late (well 7.30 anyway) and were supposed to be at the school for 8.20. That was never going to happen and as usual we turned up late (about half an hour late). Set off for the weekly school trip, today to Rio Pita - waterfalls an hour outside of Quito. Feeling crap and managed to be sick on the bus. Sophie delightfully pointed out that I could have got my drink spiked last night but I think it´s just something I ate as I was horribly ill the whole day and couldn´t even drink water. Turned out to be a two and a half hour walk to the waterfalls once we´d arrived - not fun when you can´t drink anything. Cooled down by wading across the river and squelching through ankle-deep mud on ... read more

Settling into a routine now. We finally met up with the others to go into Quito to the internet cafe and even managed to find a supermarket which sells chocolate and every brand of shampoo and conditioner imaginable so everything´s good. Went to school for another solid four hours of one-to-one tuition. Grammar is starting to get a bit much but you really do need to speak Spanish here so it´ll be worth it in the end. Quito is utterly crazy now that Carnival is over (would have thought it was the other way around!) To cross a road in this city is to dice with death - not kidding. The traffic pays no attention to red lights and buses seem to think it´s a game to try and run down tourists - I think they ... read more

We woke up horrendously early due to the time difference but lucky we did as breakfast is at 7.30 every morning(!) The three other students living with us (Silvie from Switzerland and Elisabet and Louise from Denmark) have lessons in the morning so they have to be there at 8.30. We took a taxi to Quito old town which was really gorgeous and made up of plazas full of fountains and flowers where people indulge the national pastime of sitting in the sun doing nothing. I think I could get used to living here! Really random place. There was one guy with a machete selling coconuts out a wheelbarrow which he peeled with said machete and then stuck a straw in. Also, another guy just standing on a street corner with a saw - we gave ... read more

Well, we finally arrived in Quito after a horrible long flight only to find my bag didn´t make it and is stuck in Madrid (hopefully). Though seeing some of the bags coming through completely torn open makes me think it could have been worse. I´m staying in Quito along with two others with Lorena who works for the Spanish school which I start tomorrow. She´s being nice at the moment and speaking English but told us in no uncertain terms that it will be Spanish only from tomorrow! Settling in ok and went into the centre of Quito (about a ten minute walk if you know where you´re going, half an hour for us) to look around. The city is dead at the moment as everyone is away for Carnival. Quito looks lovely and area is ... read more
