A short train trip along the coast we spent the morning lazily around the building of sails at Villeneuve-Loubet. We had travelled past it so many times we couldn't help ourselves to a nosy around. A huge apartment complex that takes up alot of space with it's curvy lines giving the impression from afar of sails. Well keep apartments which hug a small Marina full of small and large boats...most appear to be registered in London...so we wonder if most of the inhabitants or owners of the complex are British. Fantastic Plage (beach) and a promenade that stretches 2.5kms to Cagnes-sur-Mer. We didn't walk it but sat for awhile taking in all the blue and sunshine.... read more

We got all the way to Vauban at the other end of the tramline so we could get good seats on the bus to Cap d'Ail. A popular bus route with tourists as it travels along the high Corniche Road which gives spetacular views all the way up and down the coast....only to find out it's Toussaint (All Saints Day) a public holiday and this bus was not on their agenda for the day! Plan B, back on the tram to Place Garibaldi so we could catch another bus from the Port. Two came at the same time (go figure?)... Noticed an accent that wasn't french... a young Kiwi couple... nice conversations trading info. Views were still amazing from this bus that travelled on the lower coast road and we disembarked at Liberte in Cap d'Ail ... read more

Late start, still nice and sunny out. We walked the usual, through the markets on Jean Medecin down to Nice Gare. Sorted out a few tickets for tomorrow & checked where the bus leaves for the airport, seeing as there are building works taking over the road frontage outside the station while they construct 'a big thing' ! Onto Notre Dame area and tried to source some french music CD's that we had made note of earlier. I think the french language is a hard one to sing. But I do think 'ZAZ' (a female singer, Isabelle Geffroy & in particular her songs T'Attends Quoi & On Ira & others......) are very good....a mixture of jazz, french variety, soul & acoustics. Wandered further down to the Old Town and a stroll through the street of working ... read more

Early start and trammed to Massena where it was then an easy walk to Albert 1er... (premier). Number 200 bus and not many people so we were able to choose good seats. Half an hour trip to Square Bourdet in Cagnes sur Mer along the waterfront and past the airport and across the Var. A busy satellite city and from the pictures I saw, a fabulous beach. Many tourists mulling around. Easy stroll around the shops before we headed up the hill to the Medieval Village Haut de Cagnes. Steep is not even close to describing the ascent and so it was a real effort for me. Really narrow streets and homes with small doorways and windows. It is really surprising how light they are inside after having stopped in one in Arles. (Mind you we ... read more

I forget the sun rises on the left and sets on the right. Nothing like being confused at the beginning of the day! Nearly full moon but the shutters will take care of that. The weather has been great although we start out with an extra layer it's off within a couple of hours. Everyone's rugged up with scarves and jackets. We noticed quite a few people swimming and sunbathing on the beach and right next to them on the promenade everyone's got layers on. One more week of the school holidays here and the buses and trams should quieten down. We strolled around today and went up to du Chateau the point between the promenade and the port. It's a fantastic view from here and it was so clear we could see the planes landing ... read more

Cannot come to the French Riveira without visiting Monte Carlo! With all it's tacky predictiveness it still draws a crowd of gawkers like us! Easytrain ride along the coast (most trains run right on the waters edge-flattest) & run through many tunnels. So it is really scenic from the train most of the journey through Villefranche, Eze sur Mer, Beauleui sur Mer, Cap d'Ail to the Monaco Gare in the tunnel. Out of there pronto and emerged from the cliff side into the Principality of Monaco. It is a hotchpotch of building designs with many needing attention. It is certainly the playground for the rich who want to be seen by the rich. We came hoping to see some fancy things and were not disappointed. A walk up hill to the Casino where most of the ... read more

So much so for Ventimiglia...we purchased our train tickets yesterday and the choice was every 20mins. We had made our way to Gare Nice Ville (train station) by 10 to 9 only to find there were NO trains to Ventimiglia until 13.00....'strike'! A little disappointed as we had prepared and allowed for a whole day to get us across the border to the markets in Italy and home again. The strike is on behalf of the Italian end of the train link. I remember now that when we were in Verona in 2013 there was a strike on the day we were shifting from there to France and had to stop another night in Verona. They always target when it will be best effective....the school holidays. And so we looked at each other and tossed for ... read more

Took an alternate route from our place for a nosy around. There are some absolutely beautiful buildings in Nice. I would say even more have been restored since last time we were here in 2013. It's very clean and tidy for such a big city....342,000 pop.(& together outside it's administrative area 1 million). We found the Russian Orthodox Church...third time lucky we got to enter! No photos allowed but it was all very ornately gold & a service in progress. Made our way onto the waterfront, always a lovely stroll along the promenade. We stopped at Lido Plage and down to the water. The water was so calm people were swimming imaginary lengths along the shoreline....or I imagined they did.. We headed into the old town - Veux Ville where all the alfresco diners were filling ... read more

Yes...off to Villefranche! Beautiful sunny day we left home about 10am and trammed to Place Garibaldi and walked over to Promenade de Artes to catch the Bus 81 along the coast...good seat thanks John/Mary! Always a nice ride over the hill above the coastline to the otherside. You get a spetacular view of Villefranche bay as you come over the hill. Disembarked at Octroi stop on the top road by the markets and walked down to the Citadelle. A few people about. A nice walk through the gardens out of the heat. Took the walking track around the Citadelle to the base. At 28 degrees we didn't last long! so the journey in reverse...the transport system in Nice is so easy & we managed to get a 50-75% discount off our train tickets for both of ... read more

Fabulous to be here...a real mooch around day in Nice We could have trammed our way down Rue Jean Medecin, however we decided to walk... Market day 6 days a week from Place Liberation. Walked right down to Place Messina which became more and more pedestrian orientated. Lovely sunny day and on through Parc Promenade du Paillon and out to the Promenade des Anglais. Some people swimming. School holidays here so lots of people about. Around the promenade to the port and was totally shocked to see a gigantic structure at the base of the port right in front of the beautiful buildings. The tram finishes here and turns around to circut again... I could not believe it! And so I shouldn't have... it is temporary as they dig underground!! It is not their style to ... read more
