"You look like you like Rock n Roll" We arrived in Miami at 8pm after an easy travel day and flight. We're staying at The Beacon Hotel in the Art Deco district and right across from the ocean. We spent a little extra to have that view! Settle in, unpack and straight out to walk around and explore. There is a massive thunderstorm hanging over the ocean, insanely large clouds with constant flashing lightning. Absolutely stunning! We wandered up and down Ocean Boulevard looking at the architecture and feeling slightly overwhelmed, there's a huge party/club scene here and as you know, that's not really our thing. Marleah came here about 8 or 9 years ago and it wasn't quite like this. When we told people we were coming here they were surprised and that must be ... read more

Sun Shining on the Blue Water Pack up, check out and straight to the Blue Lagoon. It's a 20 minute drive from Reykjavík and we got there right about the time they opened so it wasn't overly crowded yet. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in a lava field, the water is rich in minerals that are super good for your skin. Our package included the use of robes and towels, a free gift bag, a free drink and face mask. Basically you just show up, walk into a super posh Euro showering/changing hotel and then walk 20 feet onto the deck of the most gorgeous hot spring pool. The water is HOT and feels great after the dumb weather of the last few days. It puts every spring that we've been to in ... read more

To the South and it's Pouring! Today's adventure started at 9am, sightseeing and touring around the south shore of Iceland. An hour and a half from Reykjavík, our first stop was the Skógafoss waterfall. Huge and stunning with a massive spray, neither of us have ever seen a waterfall so big. It is 82 feet wide and has a 200 foot drop. The skies are grey, lots of rain and wind, low clouds with seabirds flying high and roosting in the cliffs. A great first stop! We realized after our first stop that we were going to be totally wet all day. Torrential arctic sheets of freezing rain that soaks you to the bone in 30 seconds mixed with 30 mph winds made for a complicated sightseeing tour. Our next stop was a black sand beach ... read more

A Little Bit of Sunshine Jet lag really messes up a sleep schedule which meant we ended up sleeping in until 11. Since we missed the regular breakfast at most places, which ends at 11, we went back to the Laundromat Cafe, they serve breakfast until the afternoon. Eggs, bacon, pancakes and coffee for $40! The sun came out in little intervals today interspersed with short 10 second hail storms. The weather seems a bit sporadic and crazy except we're from Colorado so we're a bit used to weather changing by the minute. We spent most of the day wandering up and down the small streets browsing in stores and buying knickknacks and souvenirs. Marleah got an Icelandic sweater which was the one thing she was really looking forward to buying while we are here. John ... read more

Rain! Relaxing 5pm flight and the first time either of us has had a direct international flight. Our seats were in separate rows but thankfully we were able to trade with someone and sit together. To John's right was a weird hippy that kept putting her blanket over her head and dropping her water bottles on him. Pretty typical flight for us. We landed in rainy Iceland at 6am and took a Flybus to our hotel which is right in the city center and close to everything. It's too early to check in and we need to find something to do for 4-5 hours. That's really hard when you're incredibly jet lagged and tired of being around people. A couple doors down is the Laundromat Cafe where we ate a very traditional breakfast of pancakes, eggs, ... read more

Cusco - A last breakfast with Steve and Chad. - AM flight from Cusco to Lima, super long check in line at the Lima airport, they needed to reroute every single persons flight. Had to sit at the airport all day because our flight was in the evening. - Layovers in Miami and Dallas - 36 hours of travel!! Traveling Home - Pho, home, cats! - Both really sick, really bad stomachs. - Marleah's ankles were so swollen after we got home, she couldn't wear regular shoes for a week. Four days of hiking and up and down in elevation, they were the same size as her calves. Like big fat sausages! - John had to go to urgent care because he was so sick, he had colitis and needed to get on some serious antibiotics. ... read more

Inca Trail ending at Machu Picchu, 4 miles - Day 4 - Up at 3 am to get in line with every other person in every other group to hike to the Sun Gate. Like waiting in line for a concert. Everyone is getting a little testy, the hike has been much more demanding than most people realized. Even the Canadians seem ragged. The last two days were mostly downhill and rainy, causing everyone to rest at every chance. Because of this, we actually passed some of the LA contingent for long stretches and they were FURIOUS to the point of fighting with each other. We couldn't stop laughing about it, how ridiculous and unaware they were. The Brazilians were fighting with each other too. Anyone who's ever heard Brazilian Portuguese being screamed would agree that ... read more

Inca Trail, 7.5 miles - Day 1 - Met our group (there are 16 of us) in the main square, bus ride, picked up some farmers who were going to be the porters on the hike. They smelled so awful we had to put the windows down. They literally came on the bus straight from the fields and farms they work/live on. Poor guys, we thought. Towns seen out the window are extremely impoverished and sad. - Stopped for breakfast in Ollantaytambo. You could see the ruins of another Incan archaeological site from the main square. Wish we could have gotten closer, really incredible. - Bus to the trail head/Piscacucho and off we go, first part of the hike. It was enjoyable and super pretty, somewhat like the desert. The porters carry all of the stuff ... read more

Cusco - Day 1 - $50 cab ride from the airport to our hotel. - John lost his ATM/Credit Card. This occurred during a cab ride which we were basically coerced into by what turned out to be a really pushy event booking agent. We needed to stop and get cash, so of course the agent picked this weird, shady kiosk ATM and wouldn't stop talking during the entire transaction. John, not being a fan of incessant chatter or kiosks atypically left his card in the machine. - Checked into our hotel and it's really nice, comfy and quiet. - Ate lunch at a place called Jack's which is run by an Australian woman, we had salad. - Walked around the streets for awhile. Very hilly, cool looking city. - Ate dinner at a nice Italian ... read more

Traveling Travel day rundown : - Two hours of sleep, wake up at 4:30 in the dumb morning. There seems to be an equation that goes something like: not wealthy+desire international travel x probably not a morning person=always traveling at subhuman hours. - Marleah cries all the way to the airport because the cats were upset, they knew we were leaving. - Fly to Miami, 2 1/2 hour layover, lunch and coffee. - Layover goes from 2 1/2 to 4 hours. - John needs a cigarette. This will be a recurring theme. - Sit on the tarmac for another hour. - Bad movie, bad food, bad smells, can't sleep. - John really really needs a cigarette. - 5 hour flight, arrive in Lima around midnight. - Immigration and customs. Totally third worldish vibe. - Taxi to ... read more
